What’s New?Where is
everything?
Basic Functions
• The Office button hides all the most important commands
• Customize command toolbar at top:– Default: save, undo, redo
– Add basics: save as, print, new, open, etc. – Add your go-to commands: create table, spelling
and grammar, change case, apply styles, etc.
Old = menus, New = ribbons
Drop-down menus have been replaced by “ribbons”
Top-level tabs: task-based organization

CLIPBOARD GROUP•Click corner to start clipboard (normal operation – 1-item clipboard)•Up to 24 items at one time•Click an item to paste

•Format painter•Allows copying of styles•Highlight desired style•Click Format Painter – cursor changes to paint brush•“Brush” (highlight) text to change; will revert to normal after first release•Double-click Format Paintbrush to hold for many changes; press esc to turn

•Controlled paragraph-to-paragraph•Lots of bugs – formatting can “break”•Default or inital setting over-written when styles added•One-click option to add/remove space before/after•Default space “after” of 10 pts

Styles section displays “Word 2007” style as default•Body = calibiri (sans serif), Headings = cambria (serif); blue and black palette
By using styles, you can:•Instantly change the look of all similar types of text •Create an instant Table of Contents (Reference tab)

Click single down arrow to scroll through all styles in this setClick the bottom arrow to see a grid of all styles, options for creating new styles and modifying current ones.

Styles are customizable•Three main elements:
•Style set – preset formatting•Colour – preset palettes•Fonts – preset body and heading font pairs
There are also line spacing and text formatting coded into each pre-set style:Font: (Default) +Body, Left, Line spacing: Multiple 1.15 li, Space After: 10 pt, Widow/Orphan control, Style: Quick Style

MORE ON STYLES•You can choose your set, color and font, then “set as default”•You can set your own styles! The quickest way is to right click on the box and
choose “modify”•Styles are tricky to work with and often need finessing, but save time in long
documents

IMPORTANT NOTE ON IMPORTING IMAGESWhen first imported, default text wrapping setting is IN LINE WITH TEXT. •Limited mobility – can only move along text lines•Choose any other option to move image freely

Table of Contents•Auto-generated with styles•Select text for each “level” (=style; Heading 1=level 1, etc)•Update table after making changes

page or end of document; jumps to foot/end note for immediate insertion•For citations, use citation manager
