Summer vacation! Now there’s an expression everyone loves…except preachers! We worry incessantly about “the summer slump.” Historically, church attendance dips and with that giving

plunges, and preachers fret. But at First Capital we believe summer creates

great opportunities to reach out to new people! Every Friday night in July we will host Family Fun

in the Son. We have rented the May & Joe Rhodes pool in Corydon from 7-9p, for a free swim for families. I would like to see Life Groups provide food and entertainment each week. We hope you will invite your neighbors to join us for a relaxing time to cool off after a hard week. The price is right; no better deal to be found. What an easy, non-threatening way for your friends to get to know about our church.

Then Thursday, July 25 will be our Third Annual Outdoor Expo. This event is growing every year. It’s the perfect time to invite your hunting and fishing buddies to something at First Capital. This year we will have a trophy contest—take that trophy deer off your wall and bring it in for all to admire! We have more exhibits, door prizes, good food, and Eddie Salter! I’m expecting 400-500 this year (but I may be a little low on that guess)!

And it’s OK if you invite your friends to come to church with you, too! Why not take advantage of our Sat-urday evenings to worship? Service begins at 6.

In July and into August the theme for the message is “No Man’s Land: Lessons from the Wilderness.” We will look at what there is to learn from the Israelites’ time in the desert when they left Egypt but had not yet arrived at the Promised Land. All of us go through tough times, dry times. Maybe you are there right now. They bring hard lessons, but we can come out of that experience better…if

we learn the lessons. In August we will

shift and offer a series of messages addressing “It’s All Relative,” looking at how families interact, and then this fall our theme will be “Beyond Insanity!” I can’t wait for that one!

So here’s the deal: Keep the Lord front and cen-ter this summer. Make church a priority. Use the sum-mer break to invite your friends to connect with us. And I promise this is one preacher who won’t have to fret!

As we continue to grow, things change around here and so does the staff. Three years ago, the workload in the office was at the point where a part-time financial posi-tion was needed. Becky Tucker answered the call to work one day a week. She brought much needed relief to the church office. Then we grew more and Lee Whipple came on board one day a week. With the construction of the new Ministry Center came more work financially and now Becky’s position has grown to more than one day a week. She has agreed to step down so that the financial position can become two, possibly three days a week. Lee also will be stepping aside. Jerry Timberlake has agreed to take the position as Treasurer. He will start July 1st. Jerry was in the banking industry, then became a teacher and now is re-tired. He is looking forward to coming on staff part-time. I will be in the church office Monday – Friday. Please take a moment to let Becky and Lee know how much you appre-ciate their service to our church family. “Well done good and faithful servants.”

About a month ago, our Monday morning men’s group (aka “the men of Cracker Barrel”), was wrapping up the last study in our little red “Acts” books. We had been faithfully taking an in-depth look at Acts – largely following Randy’s lead from his sermon the day before.

Randy encouraged all of us that weekend (June 8 & 9 – the “balance beam” sermon) to live life in such a way that we would take chances, yes…risks in order to do great things for God’s Kingdom. We got into a discussion of the uncomfortable situations we had placed ourselves into – only to see the Lord sustain us, use us, and expand our comfort zones.

Some of the guys mentioned going into foreign cultures on missions trips. One guy had the thrill of baptizing someone for the first time. For others, coming to First Capital for the very first time made them feel like they were straddling the balance beam.

My personal balance beam exercise takes place about every week that we write our check for the 30,000 Reasons campaign. By far, nothing else has helped me grow in my faith as giving sacrificially over the past 18 months has!

I don’t know whether to call it God’s sense of humor – or His commitment to teaching us how to trust Him. Either way, 30-Thousand Reasons could not have come at a more financially stressful time in my and Amy’s lives. We are living in what is, to date, the most expensive phase of our marriage. Evan and Luke, our two sons, are both in college, and Marissa, our daughter, is a year away from starting. Adult children come with adult expens-es (vehicles, insurance, etc.) Yet, in spite of the steady stream of bills – some expected – some unexpected, God has been more than faithful to us. He has kept us all healthy, well-fed, well-rested, and has graciously provided everything we need.

I still remember vividly the Life Group study we did back in the fall of 2011, “The Treasure Principle.” For me, it was one of the most valuable investments of time I’ve made as a Christian. So often, I am reminded of the promises from Scripture that this study made clear to me.

One, in particular, is 2 Corinthians 9:10-11: “Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food

will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.

You will be made rich in every way so that you can be gener-ous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.”

We are all so often tempted to withhold from God. Maybe the car starts making a funny sound. Or, we forget about a parade of graduations, weddings, and birthdays in our family. Or, perhaps we just want to spend a little extra on vacation because, doggone it, we deserve it! When I read these two verses, I’m re-minded that God provides not only all we need, but gives us the ability – the opportunity – to bless others through the same kind of generosity that He has shown us. What a joy!

This is my encouragement to you if you have not yet experi-enced that joy of giving toward 30,000 Reasons. God has blessed us with many folks who have joined us at First Capital since the giving phase of our campaign began. Stealing a page from Coach Randy Kirk’s book, I would tell you that many great vic-tories are the result of strong second-half performances. There are countless stories of players coming off the bench in the third or fourth quarter to provide the spark their team needed to win.

Avoid the temptation to lay low through the end of the cam-paign. I can promise you that some of your most satisfying memories lie ahead when you trust God with a little and watch Him do exceedingly more than we can ask or imagine!

Let’s charge out of the locker room and hit the field running hard to start the second half!

It’s that time of the year again. Parents are singing, and celebrating, kids are down in the mouth a little bit. What time is it you ask? Back to school shopping time. I always remember that Alice Cooper commercial where he is shop-ping with his daughter. He is walking around Target cel-ebrating and putting things in the cart. She said, “But dad, you wrote the School’s out song.” He looks at her, nods and says, “It says school is out for summer.” Ready or not, here it comes.

Camp was amazing. I can’t believe the changes we are seeing in the ele-mentary students. It is so exciting seeing the new things God shows them and how the universe ex-

pands within their thinking. Sit with a child to discuss the universe and all things created by God, and you will dis-cover things you never knew existed.

The month of July will be an exciting one. We will be doing Family Fun in the Son every Friday night at the Corydon pool from 7p to 9p. This will be an event open to all. There will be games, music, devotions, and competi-tions. I look forward to this outreach event and want you to invite all you know to this.

August will be the beginning of our Wednesday night

programming and a return to, somewhat, normalcy, if you can call what God is doing here normal.

For the summer time, the younger elementary has been learning about David and doing a program called Kidmo. It is very exciting and has a great teaching component. They also learned about how to trust in God even during the sad times.

Chuck Heeke is also back teaching the 4th and 5th grade about mountain top experiences and valley happenings. It is great seeing him upstairs with the kids once again. When August rolls around, the elementary will be studying the book of Genesis. It will be an exciting time as we head into the new school year.

The Preschool, in the month of July, will be looking at the stories of Noah and Gideon, and how God took normal people and did something amazing with them. In August they will be continuing with looking at how God can take anyone and make them into something amazing. It is a will-ing heart that God is looking for.

Please be in prayer about our children’s ministries. We still need volunteers in different areas, mainly Saturday nights. Please look at your heart and ask God if He is call-ing you into this exciting world of wonder and wander.

Thanks,Jesse

Summer is here!!! Time to get outside and enjoy it. We have several things on the calendar in July:

* July 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th - Family Fun in the Son * July 5th - Special Buddies fundraiser at the Friday

Night Band Concert on the Square * July 25th - Outdoor Expo

Friday nights: Family Fun in the Son: We are tak-ing over the May & Joe Rhodes pool every Friday in July, weather permitting, from 7-9p. This FREE event is open to everyone—so invite your friends (hint, hint—Outreach). We will have refreshments for our guests as well as t-shirts. Each evening will have a short devotional during the break and we will cap it all off with a Back To School Blowout on the 26th. I need help on these evenings to cook hotdogs and just be friendly to our guests. This is a great way to share God’s love with those who may not know it. Jesse’s Life Group has offered to cover the evening of the 19th. Please call me or check the RE:Source Center for more details.

Friday, July 5th, Bomar and Ritter in concert, 7:30p. Food will be served starting at 6. FCCC is prvid-ing the meal, and proceeds from this year’s meal will be used to help our Special Buddies attend a Christian Camp later in the summer (maybe we’ll get to see Vince in the Big Bird shirt again!!). The Friday concert series is a long standing tradition for Corydon. Concerts are free and food is provided by local non-profits as a fund raiser. If you have not done so before, bring a lawn chair and come enjoy a casual evening in the shade on the Square. You will enjoy good music and a meal. We tried for five years to be in-volved in the meals until we finally received an invitation last year after someone dropped out.

** Thursday night** July 25th, Outdoor Expo: Doors open at 5p, with featured speaker Eddie Salter at 7:30p. Check out Delbert’s article or the RE:Source Center for more info.

As always, thanks to all who participate in these events (and I invite those who haven’t to contact me to get plugged in)

I can hardly believe that the OUTDOOR EXPO is only a couple weeks away! It is on Thursday, July 25th. Doors open at 5p. Our guest speaker is Eddie Salter from Evergreen, AL, and the TV show “Turkey Man.” If you know a co-worker, neighbor, friend or relative that likes the outdoors or loves to hunt, please tell them about this event! If you have never attended, please make plans to come and see what it is all about. Tickets are $10 in advance and $13 at the door. This event has steadily grown over the past couple of years and we are expecting at least 500 people this year! WOW! If you would like to help us put on this incredible event, there are several ways:

#1 Pray for this event and the folks who attend it.

#2 There are several “areas” that we need help with on the day of the event ....setup, tear down, parking, registration, secu-rity, etc….

#3 We are planning to have drawings for kids to win fishing trips and hunting trips. So, if you have a pond with too many

fish or some woods with extra deer in it, let us know and we can make some dreams come true for these kids! (and impress their parents as well)

#4 Several attendees last year decided to join us here at First Capital Christian Church. This is a great reason to buy a ticket (available at the RE:Source Center) and give it to a co-worker, neighbor, friend, or relative! It may be the best $10 gift they ever received!

#5 Put a Flyer on the bulletin board or break room table at work!

Thank You for helping with this event! We are going to change somebody’s eternity! You don’t want to miss that!

“We love you, we love you, we love you...”echoed loudly for several minutes through the church as the children of Zambia expressed their appreciation of

the shoe box gifts. I have recently returned from a “trip of a lifetime!” I visited Ndola, Zambia with Samaritan’s Purse to deliver shoe box gifts for Operation Christmas Child (OCC). If you asked me to sum up the trip in one word, it would have to be: BEYOND! My experiences were beyond anything that I thought it would be! If I could use another word, it would be: BLESSED! I surely have been blessed! Put the two words to-gether and it is: BEYOND BLESSED! Is that even possible?! Well, yes it is! Because I AM beyond blessed!

It was amazing to come alongside the local ministers of Zambia and help them in their ministry. The shoe box gifts are used as tools to reach the children of the local community. With each shoe box, the “Greatest Gift of All” booklet is handed out to teach the children about the love of Jesus, the greatest gift of all! After the distribution of the gifts, the children are invited back to the church for a 12 week Bible class called the Greatest Journey. Within the study the children learn who Jesus is and how to ac-cept Him as their personal Savior. Then they are challenged to

reach their friends and family with the Gospel. This is fulfilling the Great Commission: go and make disciples of all nations.

I was honored to have attended a graduation of 496 children who had completed the Greatest Journey class. They sang songs of their love, performed skits, danced and recited memory vers-es. The room was filled with joy! They are the future Christian leaders of Zambia.

We also visited an HIV/AIDS children’s hospital and deliv-ered 200 shoe box gifts. The children were very polite as they patiently waited for their gifts. And then the excitement broke out as we counted in unison: 1, 2, 3! Open your box! And wow, the excitement was exhilarating! We were encouraged all week to “be in the moment!” It was great advice as I tried to soak it all in, every last drop of it! We delivered about 3,200 shoe box gifts that week! What a blessing to be the hands and feet of Christ in such an intimate way.

If I could leave you with a challenge for this upcoming col-lection season of shoe boxes: Pack more shoe boxes this season than you did last season! Please know that there are many chil-dren who did not receive a box, but still need to have the hope that only our Lord can provide. YOUR gift can change a child’s life forever!
