Working within a Document
Common Toolbars
Other Toolbars Appear when certain functions are activated (e.g., Header/Footer Toolbar under View). Click on to exit.
Changing Layout
Enable and disable toolbars to accommodate your needs. View Toolbars.
Scrolling
Vertical and horizontal scroll bars. Double-arrow up and down keys.
Status Bar
Viewing Documents
In Normal View , you will not see the page's edges and the page breaks areindicated by a dotted line. The computer will perform faster in this viewing mode,and thus, useful when working with larger files. However, certain features willnot be displayed such as graphics.
In Page Layout , the page break simulates the edges of a piece of paper anddisplays your document as what-you-see-is-what-you-get , graphics and all. Thus,Page Layout will not perform as fast as Normal View.

Change View Perspective
View Normal, Online Layout View, Page Layout View, Outline, or Master Document.
Click on one of the buttons in the Document View Mode Keys

Managing Word Documents
Creating New Documents
To start a fresh document, click on the New button.
Another way is to click on File New. Several tabs will be seen with several templatesand Wizards.
Choose General tab and click on Blank Document .

Saving Documents
File Save as Use for first-time saves or when you want to save under a differentname.
To save the document you previously saved, click on File Save. OR, go to the Save button on the toolbar.
Opening Saved Documents
Three ways:
1. F ile Open. Locate the saved file and double-click the file name.
2. Click on File, then choose one of the file names listed in the bottom half of the
drop-down menu.
3. In the toolbar, click on the Open Folder button.
NOTE: If you cannot find the file in the Open window, Word may be limiting theFile types: to be shown. You can also look in the Text or property: or LastModified: dialog boxes. The Find Now and New Search buttons can also help.
File Viewing Buttons:
List - Gives you a listing of files in alphabetical order and by file type.Details - Gives you more information as size, file type, and last modified date.Properties - Gives you more specific information such as Title:, Subject:, Author:, Saved
by:, Revision:, Created:, Modified:, and Pages:.Preview - Allows you to preview the contents of a file before opening the entire file.
To open more than one file, click on hold the CTRL key and click on the filenames.Once files are highlighted, click Open.

Closing a Document
Two ways:
1. Close button2. F ile Close
If the document has not been saved, a window will appear asking you whether youwant to save the document.
Viewing Multiple Files
Two ways to ocsillate between opened files:
1. Hold down CTRL button and press F6.2. Click on Window, then click on the documents filenames.
Arrange All Option

Click on a document to make it active.
Working with Text
Typing Text
1. Look for the Insertion point.
2. Press Enter if you want to start a new paragraph or a blank line.
3. To create a page break , use the CTRL+ENTER key combination.
4. Adjust alignment by placing the insertion point at the beginning of the text andclick on the Alignment buttons on the Format Toolbar .
5. If you want to indent, place the insertion point at the appropriate place and click
on either Increase Indent or Decrease Indent buttons.
Selecting Text
Standard . Place cursor at the beginning of the information. Hold the mouse buttondown and drag the mouse to the end of the information. Then release the button.Single Word. Point at the word you want and double-click. The word will becomehighlighted in black.

Single Line. Click next to the line in the left margin. Hold the mouse button down andmove the mouse either up or down to highlight additional lines.Paragraph. Double-click next to the paragraph in the left margin. To highlight several
paragraphs, double-click in the left margin, and on the second click, hold the mouse button down. Move mouse up or down to highlight additional paragraphs.Document . Hold down the CTRL key and click anywhere in the left margin.
Moving, Copying and Pasting
Delete text by pressing either the DELETE (deletes text to the right of the cursor) or BACKSPACE (deletes text to the left of the cursor) key.
If you ever make a mistake, click the Undo (or Redo buttons) or use the CTRL + Z keys.
Copying, moving and pasting can be done with shortcut keys or by buttons.

Find, Replace and Go To are useful tools for editing documents:
If there is a certain word or phrase that you want to search throughout the document,the Find feature will help you locate each occurrence.
Replace is a feature that allows you substitute words in the document for another.
G o To allows you to skip to certain pages or other formatting features such as textlines, paragraphs, headers, graphics, etc.
