LLIIFFEE GGRROOUUPP KICK OFF is Sunday September 24 with a potluck after the service for the whole church family. Sign up in the Welcome Center. So, what are Hope’s Life Groups? Small groups of people for friendships, study, and prayer support for each other. Hope’s Elders are encouraging you to join an existing group or will help you start a new group! See Barb Scheevel for more details. 828-1521 FALL 2017 LIFE GROUP THEME IS “EMOTIONALLY HEALTHY SPIRITUALITY.” Did you know that the Christian life doesn’t work for everyone? How could “accepting Jesus as Savior” not work for a life that is rich and full of what Jesus called, “abundant life” -John 10:10, a life better than what the world offers? Whether Hollywood partying…”sex, drugs/getting wasted, rock and roll” or Wallstreet and Madison Avenue’s American Dream… “the one with the most toys wins” or at least is the “happiest and comfortable”. Is there more to living for Jesus than just toughing it out until heaven while the world seems to have the best life? Author, of the book for our topic in small groups, Emotionally Healthy Spirituality, Pastor Pete Scazzero, shares his own and his wife’s journey in finding that although born again Christians, their life was not “emotionally healthy.” Somehow their conversion didn’t have this part of the Gospel message’s invitation. Thus they often pretended to have what they didn’t… until they couldn’t anymore. And then they found that part of the Gospel of Jesus they were missing. Does that story sound interesting? Join us this fall for Life Groups and finding what emotionally healthy spirituality is all about as Pastor Keith preaches on this theme. Also… DON’T MISS OUT on all the rest of our fall activities! Sunday 9/10: worship starts at 10AM; Sunday 9/17: Sunday School for all ages at 9AM; Wednesday 9/13: Youth

Group 7PM.

Coffeepot Counselor . . . . . . . . . . . . . by Dick Mowe

Hope vs. Wishful Thinking Throughout life, I have hoped for many things, such as a good job, satisfying relationships, and a mild climate. Some have been realized; others have remained wishful thinking. God promises a different kind of hope for Christians. Biblical hope, based on Jesus’ death and resurrection, is a confident expectation of something beneficial in the future. For instance, I expect Christ will return; I believe in Jesus as Lord and Savior, so I know my salvation is secure; and I expect that all things will work for good in my life.

A friend told a story that made me think about hope. He used a fishing analogy to explain his relationship with God. He said that God had his hook in him and would not let him go. He was not hooked in the lip so he could get away, but he had swallowed the hook. I was impressed by my friend’s confidence in his relationship with God and his assurance of salvation. It was an expression of his hope.

I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about my friend’s story and questioning my own relationship with God. In other words, did I have an unshakeable hope in God? Further thought caused me to spiral into anxiety and fear. Eventually I realized that even though I didn’t feel hope at that moment, there were witnesses in my life that convinced me otherwise. These are the witnesses:

Holy Spirit – Over the years, there have been specific thoughts—consistent with scripture—reminding me of my relationship with God.

Scripture – One example is 1 John 5:13: I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

People who have encouraged me.

God’s protection and guidance in specific situations.

As I examined the witnesses, I realized that some might argue that my witnesses were not valid and that I was engaging in wishful thinking. However, there was one more witness, and that is faith, which is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things unseen. Based on faith, I accepted the witnesses and concluded that I have hope.

I leave you with the following thought from Romans 15:13: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

KKaatthhyy’’ss LLiibbrraarryy NNootteess Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein (young adult fiction) Oct. 11th, 1943-A British spy plane crashes in Nazi-occupied France. Its pilot and passenger are best friends. One of the girls has a chance at survival. The other has lost the game before it's barely begun. When "Verity" is arrested by the Gestapo, she's sure she doesn't stand a chance. As a secret agent captured in enemy territory, she's living a spy's worst nightmare. Her Nazi interrogators give her a simple choice: reveal her mission or face a grisly execution. As she intricately weaves her confession, Verity uncovers her past, how she became friends with the pilot Maddie, and why she left Maddie in the wrecked fuselage of their plane. On each new scrap of paper, Verity battles for her life, confronting her views on courage, failure and her desperate hope to make it home. But will trading her secrets be enough to save her from the enemy?
