Sai visiting Mr. Dev’s ‘udhyapan’ as a saint with 2 others; Visiting Hemad-

pant’s home in a picture-form.

Sai loves His devotees dearly and goes all out for them just as the see embraces a river.

Mr. Dev’s ‘Udhyapan’

Mr. Dev, a mamladhar in Thane district who is also a Sai devotee decided to celebrate te completion of his mother’s vow as an ‘udhyapan’ and wanted to feed 100 brahmins. He wanted Sai also to come and bless the occasion and wrote a letter to Babu Saheb Jog. Mr.Jog read the letter to Baba and Baba instructed him to write back saying that He would gladly go with two others including Mr. Jog. Though Mr. Dev felt happy, he doubted it since Baba has never gone out except for Rahata, Neem Gaon and Ruyi. But he firmly believed that if Sai willed He would do it. In the meantime, another saint visited Mr. Dev seeking donations to protect cows. Dev asked him to come at a later day as he was busy with another charity work. After a month, that saint came again and said that he had not come for donations but only for food. Dev gladly requested him to come in but the saint said that he will come at noon time.

Saint came with two others at noon and participated in the feast and left. Jog was

disappointed that Sai did not come as promised and expressed his dismay in a letter. When Jog took the letter to Baba, Sai said, ‘he thinks I didn’t come but didn’t I go with two others to take food and not for donation. I would sacrifice my life to keep my words. Why should he invite me if he doesn’t know me well?’ Dev felt very sorry when he came to now of this and sought Sai’s forgiveness.

Hemadpant’s Holi Feast

In the month of March 1917, on a full moon day, Hemadpant saw a dream where Sai informed him that He would come for food. Though he doubted it, still he instructed his wife to cook a little more in case if Sai came. At noon, he placed an extra leaf for Baba and got ready for the feast. Food was served and even ghee was offered over the rice but still there was no sign of Baba.As they closed the doors and were about to eat, there was a knock at the door. Hemadpant opened the door. Ali Mohammad and Moulana Ismu Mujavar, two of his friends were there and apologized for knocking at a wrong time and gave him a rolled paper. They said they will tell the surprising story behind it later and left. Hemadpant opened the sheet and lo! Baba was there in a picture form! He became emotional and placed the picture in front of the leaf kept for Sai and prostrated before it. Everybody felt very happy. Thus, Sai fulfilled His promise made in a dream!

THE PRICE OF EGO ******************************* There was a poor cart maker in a village. Due to paucity of new orders, he was becoming poorer and decided to move to a new village and try his luck. He was travelling through a jungle with his family and spotted a female camel in labour and struggling. They took pity on it and brought water and grass and tendered to the animal. Shortly the camel gave birth to a female camel. The cart maker decided to bring both the animals to his home and take care of them. So, the family returned home with the animals in tow. After a while, the cart maker was able to sell the mother camel's milk and earn money. He then decided to go the jungle and get more camels. He asked his wife to take care of the animals in his absence, especially the young female camel as he was very fond of the same. He tied a bell around its neck and treated it as a special one. He went to the jungle and brought couple more camels and soon his farm grew.

He even employed servants and gifted them young camels at the end of the year. Their camels used to wander on their own in the nearby grass and come back on their own to the farm. All the camels will follow their crowd, while the belled camel will trail behind and come on its own time. All the other camels used to advice the belled one to be a part of the group and come with them. But, as he was treated with more love and special care by the owner, he didn't want to listen to them. One day, when the wandering camels were returning home, the belled camel was as usual trailing behind and pray-ing around. The sound of the bells attracted a lion in the jungle nearby and it pounced on the camel at the right time. The other camels were too far away to come to its help and the belled camel met its fate. MORAL OF THE STORY ************************ Ego coupled with indiscretion,

always ends up in misery.

NAVRATHRI

The special nine nights of the year is almost here. As we all know, in these nine nights, we celebrate Devi Durga on first three nights, Devi Lakshmi on next three nights, and Devi Saraswati on the final three nights. The tenth night is celebrated as Vijayadasami.

There is a spiritual significance to Navarathri celebrations. As the great Gurus say, the purpose of human birth is to attain God. Worshipping Devis in all three forms helps us get rid of negativities, build positive virtues, and purify our hearts. Pure heart is the first and foremost requirement to get closer to the Divine. Thus, Navarathri becomes a culmination everything we have been talking about here on this page.

Devi Durga helps us get rid of our animalistic evil tendencies. Hence She is Mahishasuramardhini, the One who kills the Mahisha we have in our quality. Mahisha represents Tamas, one of the three Gunas every one of us have. Tamas is nothing but darkness and ignorance.

Devi Lakshmi gives us not just the wealth of material richness, but She is also the giver of all good virtues, which is the real wealth.

Devi Saraswati showers us with knowledge, especially the spiritual one, called Gnana.

Thus Devi Durga gets rid of our ignorance, Devi Lakshmi gives the good virtues, and Devi Saraswati gives the ultimate knowledge. One could see that how we prepare ourselves, purify ourselves, and attain the ultimate knowledge, gradually during these nine nights.

The tenth night is Vijayadasami, representing the Victory over our own minds as we worship the three Devis.

Gam GaNapatayai Namaha!

The rainy season ( varsha rutu) in the month of September ( Bhadrapada maasam) , as per the lunar calendar, brings our favorite “pot bellied” friend with HIS very pleasant “ elephant face” , famously revered as the ONE who re-moves all obstacles in all the endeavors we partake...

Yes, you have guessed it right!! Our Ganapati !

Ganesha !

Vighnesa !

HE goes by the following sixteen names that are commonly recited at each and every occasion.

Why?

Because we want every obstacle to be removed for the successful completion of the work/ project at hand!

Sumukha( pleasant faced, just a look at HIS adorable elephant face brings smile across our faces)

Ekdanta(The ONE with One tusk.. HE took one off to write the Mahabharatam as Vyasa Maharshi kept dictating the verses ,without any breaks... 100,000 verses as couplets!!!)

Kapila ( ONE who is saffron colored)

Gajakarnaka( ONE with willow basket like ears, swaying gently, listening to our prayers/ wishes and granting them as we deserve and when “good” for us.. mind you not everything we ask for ,is necessarily “ good” for us. HE knows)

Lambodara ( hanging pot belly... holds all the offerings we make, particularly “ modakas” sweet balls)

Vikato( laughs loudly as HE plays pranks)

Vighnaraaja( the leader / king of obstacles... now, this is confusing... when we want HIM to remove obstacles, then how can HE be making way for obstacles?

We have to now understand that an obstacle is not necessarily “ bad” as we would like to think... for example, we are on our way to the airport . We miss the flight because we are caught in bad traffic.. then we learn that the flight that took off ,met with some unforeseen problems... now, was the “traffic jam” a good “ obstacle”?!)

Vinaayaka( ONE who has no leader above HIM)

Dhumaketu( gray smoke like complexion , who killed the demon Dhoomasura)

GaNaadhyasya ( GaNa means group.. ONE who is in charge of groups.. we all are groups, the universe is in groups, our body has “groups” of parts ( arms, legs, eyes, ears), senses etc.. HE presides on all of them so that everything runs smoothly)

Phaala chandra (ONE with crescent Moon on HIS forehead)

Gajaanana ( Elephant faced)

Vakratunda( twisted trunk... the other way to look at the word is “ “vakra” , which means, twisted, “tunda” means breaking things into pieces.. thus Vakra tunda means, ONE who breaks our “ twisted, crooked,negative thoughts to pieces and drives us towards positive /good thoughts)

Soorpa karna( large ears)

Hey Rambha ( The “ elephant” form riding on a “lion” , appeared when Lord Siva invoked Ganesha when HE killed the demons, Tripuraasuras)

Skanda poorvaja( elder to Skanda(Subramanya)

As we can see in a few examples quoted above, the names have a “superficial” meaning but when we think and delve deeper ,there is more than what meets the eye!!

The “ Ga”letter( varnam) denotes the great Ganesha!

Yes, HE is well known as the remover of obstacles, but again HE can create one for our betterment too, as just explained above.

That is HIS mercy too.

The so called obstacle as perceived by us may look like an inconvenience at the outset but just wait patiently, and you will see HIM govern( ga varnam) our lives so tactfully.. just surrender with implicit faith.. HE will wash our troubles away with HIS swaying trunk!

All HIS names dignify HIM as one with Form( saakaara) and the Formless( niraakaara)..

They have meanings applicable to worldly affairs (leela artham) and the all pervading ONE and ONLY manifestation of ENERGY (paramaartham)!

Like two sides of the same coin!

Here is another example:

Eka danta means “one tusk”.

But the deeper meaning is :

Eka Meaning ONLY ONE

Dantam means “ that which has strength “ like our molars( dantamulu)..

Therefore , “Ekadanta” means

“ ONLY ONE who is strong and powerful “!
