bstract: This dissertation strives to understand the situation of Kenyan journalism in the 21st
century at a eriod !hen the media industry in the country has !itnessed unrecedented "ro!th
in the last decade# $ince the re%introduction of luralistic olitics in 1&&0s, the Kenyan media have
e'onentially e'anded, resultin" in the esta(lishment of many ne! media or"ani)ations, ne!
journalism and communication ro"rams, and a *erce cometition for the media market share,
amon" the no! many media or"ani)ations#
+ational in scoe, the study surveyed 0- Kenyan journalists so as to understand their
demo"rahic (ack"rounds .e#"#, a"e, education, ethnicity, "ender, income, marital status, re"ion,and reli"ion/# The resent research also investi"ates the rofessional role concetions of Kenyan
journalists# The level of jo( satisfaction amon" journalists, and factors that redict their !ork
satisfaction are also e'amined#
In addition, the research e'amines ho! three of the *ve levels of Pamela $hoemaker and $tehen
eeses .1&&/ 3hierarchy%of%in4uences3 theory .media routines, or"ani)ational, and e'tra%medial/
in4uence or constrain journalistic autonomy in ne!s decisions and journalistic autonomy at
!orklace# The other t!o varia(les under investi"ation are Kenyan journalists rofessional
attitudes to!ard journalistic ethical ro(lems .corrution and (ri(ery/, and the standards of
journalism trainin" in Kenya#5indin"s indicate that the tyical Kenyan journalist is male .6/, in his mid%thirties .M 7 8-
years/, ossesses a 9achelors de"ree .-6/, and journalism !as his *rst career choice .6/#

develoment of their rofessional values and ethics in the !orklace durin" their rofessional
ractice lacement# To accomlish its "oals, the thesis includes a literature revie! and emloys a
=ualitative e'loratory research desi"n !ith descritive elements ositioned !ithin theconstructivist aradi"m# This research desi"n allo!s the researcher to e'lore and descri(e a
toic % social !ork values and ethics % that is "enerally under%researched in the e'istin" literature,
as !ell as (ein" comle' in nature and di?cult to study# Data !ere collected usin" the critical
incident techni=ue .AIT/# This method took the form of a !ritten =uestionnaire .the AIT
=uestionnaire/ comleted (y 82 students (et!een 11th and 2th Mcto(er, 2010# The data !ere
inductively analysed usin" (oth =ualitative and =uantitative aroaches# $P$$ and $PBD soft!are
acka"es !ere also used to analyse the numerical and te'tual data resectively# The study
*ndin"s underline the vital role of the !orklace as a social sace for students to learn and
develo their rofessional social !ork values and ethics# They also hi"hli"ht the comle'ity ofimlementin" social !ork values and ethics in the diLerent !orklace environments that
students, as trainees, are laced for their rofessional ractice due to their situation%seci*c
nature# 5urther, the study reveals a num(er of factors that, from the studentsR oint of vie!, are
imortant in alyin" and uholdin" rofessional ethical standards in social !ork ractice# These
factors are associated !ithE a/ the need to ractice social !ork values and ethics in the !orklace
on a daily (asis in order to kee them alive and activeC (/ the studentsR o!n contri(ution to
uholdin" ethical standardsC c/ the role ractice instructorsFsuervisors lay in the transmission of
social !ork values to students durin" their lacementsC d/ the imortance of ethical colla(oration
inside and outside the !orklace to achieve the (est ractices for clientsC e/ the clientRs
(ehaviour as a determinant of the ethical ractice of social !orkers in the !orklaceC and f/ the
imortance of the ethics of mana"ement .includin" the olitical a?liation of the heads of
or"anisations/ in creatin" and sustainin" an ethical !orkFlearnin" environment# The study
su""ests that all the factors mentioned a(ove%to a "reater or lesser de"ree% should (e considered
imortant elements to take into account in the lannin" and develoment of values%(ased social

national%level cross%sectional studies, the imortance of income and other e'trinsic re!ards has
increased over the ast thirty years, ho!ever, at the same time that the value of !a"es has
declined#
Bn imroved aroach to understandin" !ork values may come from an e'amination of the major
themes in classical social theory that e'lain "eneral values# $tructuralists concetuali)e values
as investments that are limited (y oortunities# In this sense, values are assessments of risk# In
contrast, the cultural ersective emhasi)es the !ays that e'erience is interreted (y (eliefs#
Ualues, therefore, can re4ect strain (et!een social institutions and the !ays that individuals
mana"e their role sets# In addition, sycholo"ical orientations imact values in terms of the kinds
of e'eriences that eole seek out to validate ercetions of ersonal a"ency# 5rom this conte't,
it is ossi(le to identify t!o main mechanisms that shae !ork values# Peole are continually
selected into social conte'ts and sociali)ed (y their e'eriences# 5irst, non%!ork resources and
roles in4uence !ork values via socio%economic status .$@$/, "ender role sociali)ation, educational
attainment, sycholo"ical a"ency .3locus of control3 or :MA/ and !ork e'eriences# Then, as
eole (ecome emloyed, they come to value seci*c jo( characteristics accordin" to
interretations of their !ork e'eriences# This roject considers the hyothesis that eole !ho
have less control over their jo( re!ards as a result of the disadvanta"es of structural osition, role
constraints and 3e'ternal3 :MA come to lace more emhasis on the e'trinsic asects of !ork
than other, more advanta"ed "rous (ecause lo! ay is ro(lematic# Blternatively, eole may
simly come to value the kinds of jo(s they have e'erienced# This alternative hyothesis
su""ests that jo( re!ards reinforce !ork values#
To test the control frame!ork, !ork values are e'amined in the last three !aves of a nationally
reresentative cohort of youn" eole, the +ational :on"itudinal $urvey of the Ni"h $chool Alass
of 1&>2# The *rst time oint used in this study, administered !hen resondents are 22, is used to
esta(lish the eLects of sociali)ation in social conte'ts and therefore the !ays that !ork values
re4ect resondents characteristics and caa(ilities rior to la(or market entry# Bs redicted,
resondents from lo!er socio%economic status (ack"rounds and e'ternal :MA .lo! a"ency/ are
more likely to value e'trinsic asects of jo(s than more advanta"ed resondents from hi"her
socio%economic status (ack"rounds and internal :MA .hi"h a"ency/# esondents !ho are ;hite
and those !ith a colle"e de"ree are more likely to value intrinsic jo( re!ards# In this initialanalysis female resondents value income and jo( autonomy less than males, su""estin" that
their !ork references are shaed (y "ender sociali)ation and con4ict (et!een !ork and home
life#
In the second emirical chater, t!o jo( characteristics, !eekly income and jo( autonomy, are
incororated into the analyses to test the idea that less control over jo( re!ards is ro(lematic#
Bll else held e=ual, the results indicate that income and jo( autonomy reinforce their resective
!ork values# rous in the analysis that tended to earn lo! ay, ho!ever, tended to value it more
than other, more advanta"ed "rous# 5emale resondents earned considera(ly less than male
resondents and have less jo( autonomy, (ut they value e'trinsic re!ards sli"htly more thanmales, su""estin" that their !ork e'eriences (ecame ro(lematic as they accumulated la(or

market e'erience# 9lack resondents and those !ith lo! educational attainment also earn less
income than advanta"ed "rous and lace more emhasis on e'trinsic re!ards# There is also
some evidence that jo( autonomy reinforces intrinsic !ork values# en !ith internal :MA have
access to jo(s !ith more autonomy and also come to lace more emhasis on this jo(
characteristic than e'ternal :MA men# arried !omen do not lace more emhasis on income
than sin"le !omen even thou"h they earn less, su""estin" that *nancial asects of jo(s are not
ro(lematic due to their family roles#
The results rovide mi'ed suort for the hyothesis that !ork values are imacted (y control
over the attainment of jo( re!ards# The role con4ict that !omen e'erience aears to
disadvanta"e them in the la(or force and the results su""est that ay (ecomes increasin"ly
ro(lematic as they articiate in the la(or force# Bdvanta"e aears to accumulate over time for
some men as they are a(le to *nd their valued jo( characteristics in the la(or market# ens
a(ility to access jo(s !ith the freedom to make decisions at !ork may e'lain !hy their internal
:MA redicts "reater interest in jo( autonomy over time#
5uture research that e'amines !ork values and control over jo( re!ards !ould (ene*t fromadditional anel studies that can account for the mediatin" eLect of :MA# ore detailed measures
of !ork values and jo( re!ards !ould imrove evaluations of the ro(lematic re!ards hyothesis
and reinforcement hyothesis# ankin"s of the imortance of !ork that is meanin"ful, secure, and
an oortunity for enjoya(le social interaction !ould (e useful in anel studies# Policy aimed at

bstract: The urose of this study !as to investi"ate to !hat e'tent "ender, achievement level,
and income level redict the intrinsic and e'trinsic !ork values of 10th "rade students# The study
e'lored !hether "rou diLerences !ere "ood redictors of scores in !ork values# The research
!as a descritive, cross%sectional study conducted on 181 10th "raders !ho attended science%
oriented charter schools# $tudents took $uers ;ork Ualues Instrument, a :ikert%tye test that
links to 1 !ork values, !hich can (e cate"ori)ed as intrinsic and e'trinsic values .$uer, 1&>0/#
ultile re"ression analysis !as emloyed as the main analysis follo!ed (y B+AMUB# ultile
re"ression analysis results indicated that there is evidence that &/# No!ever,
there !as no statistically si"ni*cant diLerence (et!een the intrinsic !ork values (y "ender# Mne
