● You are not required to complete the work
for both specialisms, only 1.

Lesson 4 - Performer
The director of ‘Shrek the Musical’ would like to tour their performance, one of the places
they would like to perform is The Georgian Theatre. This means changes have to be made
to the set. Over the next few lessons you are going to develop your own set design for
‘Shrek the Musical’ suitable for The Georgian Theatre in Richmond.
Lesson 4 –
designer
Task
Create a moodboard* of ideas for
set design for these locations:
Shrek’s Swamp, Duloc, Dragons
Castle.
*A moodboard is a collage of
images. I would like images of ideas
for: set, furniture and props.

During this lesson you are going to develop your performing skills by completing a mixture of
tasks based on characters from ‘Shrek the Musical’ and perform, film and self assess.
Task 1
Pick one of the 5 characters on the monologue sheet
on class charts.
Read the monologues and pick one of the
monologues to
focus on.
Decide which vocal skills you are going to use to
show the character and their emotions within the
monologues. Rehearse your vocals and decide on
how you will move and how you will use your
physical skills. Rehearse with your vocals and
physical skills together.
Lesson 5 -
Performer
Film yourself performing
your monologue and

During this lesson you are going to develop your performing skills by completing a mixture of
tasks based on characters from ‘Shrek the Musical’ and perform, film and self assess.
Task 2
Perform your monologue to
someone in your family and get
some feedback - use the questions
on the right to help.
Watch your performance back and
complete the self assessment.
Lesson 5 -
Performer
Was I
believable?
Was I like a
different
person on
stage?
Did I stay
focussed the
whole time? Could you
hear and
understand
everything I
said?
Is there
anything else
I need to
improve?
Were my
characters
emotions
clear?
Last lesson you started to plan your ideas for your set design for the touring production of
‘Shrek the Musical’ that will take place at The Georgian Theatre. Today, you are going to
further develop you set design skills through creating sketches bringing these ideas to life...
Lesson 5 – Designer Task 1
On a plain piece of paper sketch
your set design ideas for one of the
locations you planned for last
lesson: Shrek’s Swamp, Duloc,
Dragons Castle.
Label your sketch explaining what it
is. Don't forget to use the correct
keywords!
Please go to the next slide for more
guidance.
For each of your designs, you have
to consider the following:
● What does the set
communicate to the audience?
Does it help to show the
location and support the action
that takes place?
● How practical is the set for the
actors to work in? Can they
move and dance in it? What
material is it made from? Will it
last for 8 shows a week for 6
months?

‘Shrek the Musical’ that will take place at The Georgian Theatre. Today, you are going to
further develop you set design skills through creating sketches bringing these ideas to life...
Lesson 5 Task 2
You are going to create a 3D model
of your set for one of the locations
you have planned. First thing,
collect some materials to use for
your model. E.g. Cereal boxes, old
shoe box, scrap paper, sweet
wrappers, tape, glue, etc…
Create your 3D model of your set. If
you can’t find any glue/sellotape,
lay it all out and take a photograph
of it.
You can also make it out of lego!
