e conceptual idea for this group project is based around the notion of isolation in an urban environment. We follow the analogy of a submarine which becomes inverted. e submarines periscopes , ect., become the means by which the elevated live/work center is supported both structurally and systemati-cally.

e structure is an education facility housing 100 students, providing studio, presentation and administration spaces.

structural evolution

e concepts of parametric design where applied to a site located at High Bridge Park, NYC. With the now universally recognized threat of global warming and rising sea levels, this group project is an intensive study conducted using parametric modeling techniques as well as graphic analysis in order to understand the functionability of bifurcating systems as a means of hydraulic control. e resulting systems where applied to both the landscaping and structural modeling of the site.

ARCH5113_Project Analysis: BUILDING ORIENTATION/SITING

In general, structural ele-ments of our design are oriented due east, facing the rising sun. The struc-tures receive direct sun to the curtain wall façade from 09:00 to 11:00 daily. The remaining time sunlight is directed to the green roof expanse with the inte-rior in shade due to the buildings partial subterra-nean design providing cooling effects during the summer and insulation and warming effect during winter months.

Wind speeds and intensities are from the south and southwest. This will allow the roof structures to deflect most of the air around the structures thus decreasing the over-all heat and energy loss due to conduction.

ARCH5113_Project Analysis: SYSTEMIC CONTEXT

Our project takes full advantage of environmental con-ditions for the area including: passive heating, cooling and ventilation (as shown in the ecotect image). Due to the fact our formal structures are somewhat subterra-nean, the concept of thermal mass will aid in the heat-ing process during some seasons, however a formal environmental heating system will be required for tem-peratures approaching and below 15 deg. C as shown referenced by the psychrometric chart. Utility closets/basements/accesses will need to be added to the formal layout of individual building to accommo-date these systems (not shown). Additional systems will include: extensive natural and artificial illumination systems for art exhibitions as well as advanced humidity controls.

In large part, the use of passive systems will potentially eliminate the need for large scale, energy intensive environmental systems more traditional mechanical heavy live/work, public structures, would require.

2750 Raymond Avenue

Pages one and two are copies of illustration boards produced for the 29,000 square foot 2750 Raymond Avenue project. Scope of work was to include parking, new loading dock, entrance enlargement, exterior painting and interior design.

is site drawing, trac ow and parking analysis was produced using a combination of tradition and modern techniques to include site observa-tion and measurement, Google Earth, AutoCAD and Adobe Illustrator.

e following page shows the detailing of the new exterior loading dock which was intended to be added to the existing structure, north side.
