The first phase of the works to divert gas, electricity and water utilities out of the old bridge is now complete. The second phase of the bridge works will begin on 22 February when Bexley High Street will be closed to traffic in both directions at the Old Mill site for approximately five weeks. During this time the old bridge will be demolished and the foundations of the new bridge will be built. Some of the utility services will then be diverted back into the new bridge structure. What steps have you taken to minimise the impact of the work? l We are constructing as much as possible of the new bridge off site and minimising the time when the road is completely closed. l The diversion routes via the A2 will be well signed and every attempt will be made to prohibit other works happening on these and on other key relief routes. l We will be extending the working hours on site as necessary (7am to 8pm and at weekends). l We are using local businesses for supplies where possible. For example Econ Construction Ltd who are based in Ruxley for the demolition, J Clubb in Wilmington for the ready mix concrete and Bexley Sand and Gravel. l We are providing regular updates on the work direct to businesses and residents as well as via press releases to local media, Twitter, Bexley Magazine and on our website at www.bexley.gov.uk/bexleyhighstreetbridge l Signage publicising the fact that businesses in Bexley Village remain open is on display at 12 key access road points. Signage publicising the road closure is displayed at the bridge site and a variable message sign (VMS) has been positioned on the Ruxley Corner roundabout. This will give up to date information on congestion and queuing enabling drivers to take alternative routes if necessary. Why do you need to close the road for this phase of the works? The road closure will enable us to safely dismantle the old bridge and construct the foundations of the new bridge some of which are below water level. We will also be returning some of the diverted utility services back into the new structure. Why are you doing this work now? The bridge at the Old Mill site in Bexley Village is weak and unless it is replaced it could fail. We have successfully obtained funding from Transport for London and are investing in this critical infrastructure now to ensure that Bexley Village continues to thrive in the future. We want to carry out the work in a controlled and managed way rather than wait for the bridge to fail. The new bridge will be stronger and slightly wider. What help can businesses get? If businesses feel that their sales have been adversely affected by road works, UK legislation currently enables them to obtain help by applying for a business rate rebate. They cannot obtain financial compensation. To claim a business rate rebate businesses please approach the Valuation Office, not the London Borough of Bexley. The Valuation Office is responsible for assessing business rates and can assess whether individual premises should have their rates re-assessed for the period that they are affected by the works. Work to replace the bridge at the Old Mill site in Bexley Village progresses

Work update Work to demolish the bridge at the Old Mill site in Bexley Village and rebuild a stronger and slightly wider one continues on schedule.

What steps have you taken to minimise the impact of the work?l We are constructing as much as possible of the new

bridge off site and minimising the time when the road is completely closed.

l The diversion routes via the A2 will be well signed and every attempt will be made to prohibit other works happening on these and on other key relief routes.

l We will be extending the working hours on site as necessary (7am to 8pm and at weekends).

l We are using local businesses for supplies where possible. For example Econ Construction Ltd who are based in Ruxley for the demolition, J Clubb in Wilmington for the ready mix concrete and Bexley Sand and Gravel.

l We are providing regular updates on the work direct to businesses and residents as well as via press releases to local media, Twitter, Bexley Magazine and on our website at www.bexley.gov.uk/bexleyhighstreetbridge

l Signage publicising the fact that businesses in Bexley Village remain open is on display at 12 key access road points.

Why are you doing this work now?The bridge at the Old Mill site in Bexley Village is weak and unless it is replaced it could fail. We have successfully obtained funding from Transport for London and are investing in this critical infrastructure now to ensure that Bexley Village continues to thrive in the future. We want to carry out the work in a controlled and managed way rather than wait for the bridge to fail. The new bridge will be stronger and slightly wider.

What help can businesses get?If businesses feel that their sales have been adversely affected by road works, UK legislation currently enables them to obtain help by applying for a business rate rebate. They cannot obtain financial compensation.

To claim a business rate rebate businesses please approach the Valuation Office, not the London Borough of Bexley. What impact will the road closure have?l Traffic will be diverted via the A2. The northbound

diversion will be via Vicarage Road, Dartford Road, Old Bexley Lane, the A2 and Bourne Road. The southbound diversion will be via Bourne Road, the A2, Old Bexley Lane, Dartford Road and Vicarage Road. The road will re-open to southbound traffic only on 28 March. Northbound traffic will continue to be diverted until the work finishes in July 2016.

l Bus routes 492, 601 and B12 will be diverted and the bus stops in use will change during the road closure. Those who normally travel to Bexley Village on bus routes 492, 601 and B12 will need to change to route 132 or 229 at bus stops E and F on Gravel Hill. There will be a temporary school crossing patrol available to help students cross between these bus stops on Gravel Hill at peak school journey times in the morning and evening.

To view the bus diversion routes download the maps at www.bexley.go.uk/bexleyhighstreetbridge

l Pedestrian access will be maintained during the road closure via a temporary footbridge which has been constructed across the River Cray at the Old Mill Lane site.
