“The City Of Ephesus”by Merrill C. Tenney

The city of Ephesus was one ofthe oldest of the settlements on thewest coast of Asia Minor and wasthe leading city of the Romanprovince of Asia. Its origin isshrouded in antiquity, but it was aprominent settlement in the eighthcentury B.C. and was at an earlydate taken over by the Greeks. Itwas located about three miles fromthe sea on the Cayster River, whichat that time was navigable, so thatEphesus was a seaport. The valleyof the Cayster penetrated farinland, making a caravan route tothe East. Roads from Ephesuscommunicated with all the otherlarge cities of the province and withthe lines of commerce thatconnected with the north and east.It was a strategic point forevangelism, since workers fromEphesus could maintain contactwith the whole Asian hinterland.

The outstanding feature ofEphesus was its great temple ofArtemis, a local deity who waslater identified with Artemis of theGreeks and with Diana of theRomans. Her image was a manybreasted figure with a female face,having instead of legs asolid block of stone. Thefirst temple was probablybegun in the sixthcentury B.C., but was notfinished until 400 B.C. Itwas burned to theground in 356 B.C. andreplaced by a newer andlarger structure, fourhundred twenty-five feetby two hundred twentyfeet, which wassubsidized bycontributions from all ofAsia. It was considered tobe one of the wonders ofthe world and was anoutstanding center for

pilgrims who came to worship atits shrine.

Not only was the temple acenter for religious worship, butbecause its halls and grounds wereregarded as sacred and inviolable,it became also an asylum for theoppressed and a depository forfunds.

A crude picture of the templeappeared on Ephesian coins,accompanied by the very titlewhich is used in Acts for the city,NEOKOROS, or “temple-sweeper”of Artemis (19:35). Contrary tomuch of the routine state worshipof the ancient world, theinhabitants of Asia and of Ephesusin particular exhibited an almostfanatical devotion to Artemis. Itsintensity appeared in the action ofthe mob in the amphitheater, whichfor two hours shouted, “Great isDiana of the Ephesians” (19:34).

Ephesus was rated as a free cityand maintained its owngovernment. The ultimateauthority lay in the popularassembly when legally convoked(19:39), while the leaders or senateof the city acted as the central

legislative body. Thesecretary or “town clerk”was the responsible officerwho was entrusted withkeeping records and withpresenting business to theassembly (19:35). Theinfluence of labor was alsostrong, for it was the guildof silversmiths whoprotested that Paul’sevangelizing activities hadimperiled their trade inreligious souvenirs, thesilver shrines that wereminiature copies of thetemple.

There were severalimportant problems

which Paul encountered inEphesus. The first was the questionof the survival of the teaching ofJohn the Baptist, whose discipleswere still active after John’s life hadclosed. Apollos, an educatedAlexandrian Jew, had already beenpreaching in Ephesus concerningJesus, “knowing only the baptismof John” (18:24, 25). Undoubtedlyhe knew that the Messiah wascoming, that He had already beenanointed to serve God, and thatpreparation for His ministry mustinclude repentance and faith. Hisknowledge was not so much falseas partial; he had not gone farenough. He was preaching in thesynagogues and apparently evokedsome response.

Under the tutelage of Priscillaand Aquila his understanding wasbroadened. A contrast of phraseshere is enlightening: Luke says thathe “had been instructed in the wayof the Lord” (18:25), but that“Priscilla and Aquila … expoundedunto him the way of God moreaccurately” (18:26, italics ours).Leaving Ephesus with therecommendation of the believersthere, he went over to Achaia andbecame a strong apologist for theChristian faith, especially amongthe Jews (18:28). Later he becameone of Paul’s trusted friends andcolleagues (I Cor. 16:12, Titus 3:13).

Apollos departed from Ephesusbefore Paul arrived, but others likehim were there. These men,disciples of John the Baptist, weredeficient in personal spiritualexperience. So obvious was this factthat when Paul came into contactwith them, he asked them if theyhad received the Holy Spirit whenthey believed. Their answer wasthat they had not so much as heardwhether the Holy Spirit had come.In view of John’s prediction that

Jesus would baptize with the HolySpirit, it seems inconceivable thatthey had never heard His name;but they might never have heardof the fulfillment of the promise atPentecost. The reply of Paulproved that the baptism of Johnwas insufficient to produce a fullChristian experience, for thebeliever must not only repent ofsin, he must also be filled with theSpirit. The first problem atEphesus, then, was to bring sincerebut immature believers up to date.

A second important problem ofthe Asian mission was the occult.The Jewish exorcists representedby the seven sons of Sceva, and thehundreds of nameless personswho burned their books of magicare proof of the wide extent towhich superstition anddemonology prevailed. Theanswer to this problem was

twofold. On the positive side, thepower of Christ was demonstratedto be greater than that of theexorcists and of demon cults. Thesick were healed, the obsessed weredelivered, and those who practicedthe occult arts were so convicted ofthe evil of their ways that theyvoluntarily destroyed the books ofmagic on which they had relied(Acts 19:19). On the negative side,the exclusive character of thegospel was demonstrated. AChristian did not add hisChristianity to his other religions;he discarded them. Christianitywas essentially intolerant of allrivals, and nowhere is thisprinciple better demonstrated thanat Ephesus.

The ministry of Paul in Ephesuswas singularly effective. For morethan two years (19:8, 10) he wasable to preach unhindered, first in

the synagogue and later in theschool of Tyrannus (19:9). Heperformed special miracles (19:11)and reached the populace ofEphesus and of the province as awhole more thoroughly than he didthe people of any other place. Lukenotes that “all they that dwelt inAsia heard the word of the Lord,both Jews and Greeks” (19:10), that“mightily grew the word of theLord and prevailed” (19:20), andthat so many had believed thatidolatry suffered economic loss(19:26,27). The church at Ephesusbecame a missionary center andwas for centuries one of thestrongholds of Christianity in AsiaMinor.
