Clergy Candidate List In 2016, the LCMS in convention adopted Resolution 12-02A “To Encourage Calling Church Workers on Candidate Status.” Included in the resolves was that “district presidents publish annually in a district publication the names of these candidates” who are on candidate status. The only pastor on candidate status in the Kansas District is Rev. Frederick Smith, who lives in Berlin, Germany and assists congregations of the SELK (Selbständige Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche—Germany’s Independent Evangelical Lutheran Church).

2018 Pentecost Offering Update The annual Kansas District Pentecost Offering is coming up this month, which will give LCMS congregations throughout Kansas the opportunity to work together to support Guinean pastors-in-training. Last year, we raised close to $15,000 in the offering, enough to cover a year’s tuition for three students. Every contribution helps! Pastors: You should have received a mailing near the beginning of May with Pentecost Offering bulletin inserts. We estimated the number of inserts based on a percentage of your average weekly attendance; if you need additional inserts, you can find a PDF on our website. Just look for the announcement slide on our homepage. (Alternatively, you can contact Janet Powell at [email protected]; we have some extra inserts in the office.) You can also find an editable Word doc with announcements and a collect for Pentecost Sunday on our website. We appreciate you spreading the word and keeping the Guinean students in your prayers!

A NOTE OF CLARIFICATION ON THE PENTECOST OFFERING

In some convention years, the Pentecost Offering and the convention offering have supported the same cause. Not so this year. The Pentecost Offering will go to West Africa, while the convention offering will go to the Rev. Eugene Schmidt Memorial Mission Fund, which supports mission outreach in Kansas.

Teachers Chosen for SLED Program The LCMS School Ministry SLED (School Leadership Development) project management team met in late March and selected participants for the SLED 18 program. Congratulations to Kansas District Lutheran school teachers Whitney Holle (St. John, Alma) and Daniel Gibson (Hope, Shawnee), for being selected to participate in the program. SLED is a program of LCMS School Ministry that prepares future administrators for Lutheran schools. 40 percent of Lutheran school administrators now serving are expected to retire within the next five years, creating a significant leadership void. Since 1996, the SLED program has produced a pool of nearly 400 potential administrative candidates, an accomplishment that LCMS School Ministry Director Terry Schmidt says is “even more essential today than ever before.” Holle and Gibson will participate in the first of two three-day trainings in St. Louis, June 21-23, 2018.

“It is time that we, the Church, become more intentional about enabling people to see aging as a blessing to celebrate rather than a burden to endure! God’s people do not need to “get over it.” We need to “get on with it” as we celebrate and serve people of all ages! The new frontier for the Church is longevity, and longevity is getting longer all the time. Where else but in rural America is the best place to make this statement to the whole Church, as the rural/small-town churches around us become a spiritual renewal center for older adults, and at the same time, for those of all ages as well?”

Lutheran Early Response Team (LERT) News Donna Williams, District Disaster Response Coordinator It’s been a busy seven months for disaster responders! And that includes those who are reaching out on behalf of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Beginning in late August and continuing into the spring and summer, LCMS World Relief and Human Care and its Disaster Response arm have joined forces with church leaders and disaster coordinators in Synod districts to bring help to the hurting — both physical and spiritual — in the wake of three devastating hurricanes, a major earthquake and menacing wildfires. It’s not unusual for situations to “change really quickly” on the disaster front, admits the Rev. Dr. Ross Johnson, director of LCMS Disaster Response. HERE IS A QUICK RECAP: California Wildfires: Burned approximately 400 square miles and resulted in 43 deaths and 14,000 homes either damaged (10K) or completely destroyed (4712). Many in the Santa Rosa area are forced to make the difficult decision to relocate because they cannot afford to rebuild their homes. Mexico’s Earthquake: The Sept. 19 earthquake collapsed more than 40 buildings, killing approximately 370 people and injuring scores more. In some parts of the city, residents are still without water in December due to water main breaks that had not been repaired. Harvey’s wrath in Texas: The work continues – from debris removal, to mucking out, to replacing insulation and drywall – on some 120 hurricane damaged homes. How can you help?

• Volunteer at any of the three sites set up to house teams in Houston or on the Coastal Bend. • Send donations to the Texas District where 100% of the proceeds to go the families impacted by the

hurricane. • Pray for the affected families and those who are reaching out to them.

More information can be found at www.txlcms.org. Florida’s Irma: In the wake of Hurricane Harvey (August 2017) came Irma in Sept. 2017. In the aftermath of this powerful storm, 6.8 people were without electricity. Some, like those in Puerto Rico, are still waiting for service to be restored, which affects the availability of safe drinking water. In addition to the projected $50 billion in damage, 80 people lost their lives.

NEW ON THE RADAR: Rhea Fire in Dewey County, Oklahoma. It’s reported that to date some 400,000 acres have been charred by a wild fire that is only about 3% contained. When you look at it on the Fire Map, that’s almost half the county. My friend, Lori, has a grandmother who owns 900 acres in the area. The only portion not torched by the fire is the 30% planted with wheat. Fifty homes have been lost, 20 of those in the small community of Vici. She told me today that 17 kids in that school district are now homeless. She sent me pictures … I’ve seen it from horseback and it breaks my heart. I share this news with you in the hopes that you will add all of these folks, including the first responders and aid workers, to your prayers. If you are available to spend a few days, a week, or more in any of these places, I know they would be most grateful. Work in these regions will be ongoing for many months, even years. Jesus reminded His disciples that they would never be without those in need. Knowing that keeps me humble and grounded and so very thankful for God’s omniscient grace and mercy. And in light of this, I can boldly proclaim with the prophet Isaiah, “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8) To God be the Glory! Donna Williams DDRC Kansas District [email protected]

Business Office New Business Manager Joins District Staff

Heather Williams has been hired as the new Kansas District business manager. Williams succeeds Debbie Crites, who is retiring June 15 after nearly 28 years in the position. Prior to joining the Kansas District staff, Williams, a Washburn University graduate, worked as an accountant for 13 years. In her previous positions, she gained considerable experience with financial operations, including audits, investment tracking, payroll, taxes, monthly accounting procedures and reporting. “I love providing information and being of service to people, which there is a lot of opportunity to do in business and accounting,” said Williams. “I especially love not-for-profit accounting and the chance to help an organization accomplish its mission.” An important part of that effort is helping people understand financial reports, which is one of

Williams’ specialties. “Accounting doesn’t have to be black and white,” she pointed out. “Colors and pictures are okay!” Williams says she’s looking forward to using her skills for the benefit of the church. “How often does one get the chance to use their professional experiences to directly serve the church and glorify God in their daily vocation?” said Williams, reflecting on her new position. “Getting the chance to work with people in my own faith organization, not just daily in the office, but also with congregations throughout the state, is so cool.” Williams already has quite a few connections to congregations in the state, with ties to churches in Phillipsburg, Coffeyville, Larned, and Topeka, where she attends Calvary Lutheran Church with her husband Matt and two boys, Jack and Jett. When she isn’t crunching numbers, Williams enjoys watching her boys play baseball, photography, antiques, getting lost in books, and camping. She begins working full-time in the District Office on May 14.

The District Is Now on Facebook

Technically, we should probably say that the District is once again on Facebook. We did have a page in the past, but we bowed out for a few years. We’re now back with a new page, “Kansas District LCMS,” which we launched about a week ago. We encourage you to visit and “Like” the page so you can stay in the loop between newsletters.

You’ll find a few things on our Facebook page that you won’t find in Workers, including additional photos, weekly updates and reminders, shared items of interest, and prayer requests for individual congregations and schools. Speaking of that prayer request project, we need pictures, which brings us to our next item…

Index

Photo Request: Congregations and Schools

Many years ago, a member of the Kansas District staff tooled around the state and snapped pictures of all our churches and schools in the Kansas District, leaving us with a very nice collection of photos. But that was in 2004, which means those pictures are close to 15 years old (and we’re missing a few here and there). Granted, many of your churches and schools might look pretty much the same, but we’re thinking an update is in order. We’ll be using the photos in the near future for two projects: 1) a slide show for the upcoming District convention, and 2) prayer request posts for Facebook. You’re invited to send a recent photo of your church and/or school to Kris Bruss at [email protected]. You don’t need a high-end camera or professional photographer; cell phones take nice photos, too. Just avoid sending a small file (e.g., those little 640 X 480 files for quick emailing), which limits the use of the photo. If we don’t receive a new photo, no worries—we’ll just use the one we have on file.
