FFROMROM THETHE PPRESIDENTRESIDENT

Hello everyone, I am writing this for the July 19th deadline but when you read this we will be in the dog days of sum-mer. The “dog days of summer” occur during the hot, sultry, muggi-est weather of summer in the northern hemisphere. When I go out in the woods for a late after-noon stroll or ride I find that a vari-ety of insects seemed especially impervious to the heat--including those omnipresent, ever-noisy Dog-day Cicadas whose droning call is synonymous with the pass-ing of summer. It also signifies time to think about attending the Foun-dation Appaloosa Horse Registry annual meeting on October 16th, 2010 at the Shipshewana Town Center, Shipshewana, Indiana. The Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry meetings are held annu-ally. This is a chance for breeders, trainers, owners and horse lovers to congregate and discuss issues affecting FAHR and the equine in-dustry. I’m hoping for a big turnout and looking forward to seeing you there. FAHR has Merchandise for sale jackets, long sleeve T-shirts, short sleeve T-shirts, belt buckles, mugs, calendars and decals. The FAHR Website is a top priority for me in 2010. I was under the im-pression that it would be launched by the end of May. As you can see that did not happen . The last time I have been in contact with the web designer was the 14th of June. He built websites for the Palomino Horse breeders association, My Horseforsale.com, Pinto Horse As-sociation and others. I talked to some of these people and all of

them liked him and had no issues with him. I am and have been try-ing to reach him by phone and email at least twice a week. Below is the last email message I have received from him. To view the new website and it’s progress type the link into your browser: http://fahr.greenspeakdev.com “I wanted to give you an update on where I am with your website. Pro-gress has been going good but as always, not at the pace I wanted it to. It seems when I get one thing working right, it breaks another. But alas, I think I'm about on the downhill run with this template and it's integration into the system. I've been working on the shopping cart and the other modules that require template adjustments and those are coming together well. I should have all those adjustments done today. I'm also going to start putting up the content for the bulk of the web-site today and turning most of that on. So the website is going to start coming to full life by the end of the day. I have included a link so that you can view the progress and see what has been accomplished so far. Once I have finished with the build out of the content and the module adjustments I'm doing with the template, then I will being the inte-gration of the new horse registry. That may take me a day or two to get fully functional but I hope to be quicker than that. Since this site has a lot more going on, I have been doing a lot more testing of the template than I normally do to make sure it doesn't interfere with other pieces of the site unintention-ally and with the content manage-ment system. So far all the issues I have had are easily resolved and no longer in the way. Once the site is build out I will do a cross-browser check in Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Internet Ex-plorer to clean up any additional

styling problems that will occur with that. I know of one already on the homepage with the news articles, but I will fix that when I find and fix all cross-browser problems. If you have any images you would like to see on the homepage to go in the slideshow area, let me know and I will get those formatted and loaded up for you. In addition, I'll be compiling what I call a pre-launch checklist of just the things that I go through the site and see that need addressed, additional thinking or just comments about use of the pages. Take a look and let me know if you have any questions. Right now you'll see sample content but I'll be replacing all of that shortly today. “ http://fahr.greenspeakdev.com The Annual Membership Meeting will be October 16, 2010 at the Shipshewana Town Center Confer-ence Room Shipshewana, IN 46565. Host Motel: Splash Univer-sal Wana Waves 800 S Van Buren St. Shipshewana, IN 46565. Res-ervations phone 1-877-752-7482. They are holding rooms for FAHR on Thursday, Friday & Saturday October 14, 15, and 16. Let them know it is for FAHR the cost is $89.00 plus tax, includes break-fast. To use the water park it is an additional $40.00 and that includes 4 passes. FAHR has it’s own breed, the Foundation bred Appaloosa, it’s own Registry and it’s own Stud Books. FAHR is committed to the respon-sible breeding, training, care, use, enjoyment, transport, and retire-ment of horses. I believe in the Foundation Bred Appaloosa. John Hess

WELCOME NEW FAHR MEMBERS!

ApHC MOTION 39-07-09

Hi-- We have here in Saskatchewan a Reg.QH stallion that is a bay blan-ket /spots marked horse, {typical Appaloosa markings}. Both his parents are registered Quarter horses. The Quarter Horse people have relaxed their rules re-cently to allow this. Now this horse can also be Regis-tered as an Appaloosa. WHAT NEXT!!!!! I hope the ApHCC or the FAHR do not go along with this rul-ing. I do not agree with it at all. George Galambos FAHR Member #

( Editor’s Note: As of the June ApHC meeting this rule has been rescinded. However I have been told by a current member of the Board of Directors that this rule is being re-worded and will probably be re-submitted for vote once again in a future meeting. If you oppose this rule

please contact your regional Director and let them know your thoughts and opinions on this issue. As the ApHC evolves it makes me doubly glad that the FAHR exists.)

SPOTTED BUTT

By Kiss My Finest Heart out of Ea-gles Moonmist Onyx the first 100% Foundation Appaloosa to be born in Spain. To Heart and Misty - a daughter! Sneakily born sometime between 12:00 and 15:00 hours today (24 May 2010) despite me having sat with her from 04:00 am until 07:00 am Misty very adeptly gave birth to a stunning filly and is a stunning mother. When we discovered the new arrival, and of course went running like a pair of frenzied ´happy´ idiots towards her, Misty stepped back and happily pre-sented her daughter. Papi was given a little ´what for´ and quietly kept a watchful eye in the back-ground.

Fair week, 4h and the FAHR Appaloosa !

By Haley Street, Chelsea Leavitt

Fair time is always a great time, no matter what you plan on doing. For Alayna and Ra-chel, daughters of Rob and Dawn Bates, the County Fair is more than amusement rides and cotton candy. This summer the two sisters set their sights on the 4H com-petition of their fair, and by the end of the week they proudly took home a combined total of 14 ribbons. Alayna Bates, with her beau-tiful mare IPA She’s Got The Spots (aka Susie), showed in Western Sportsmanship and-Trail class where she won a first place ribbon, finishing with a total of five ribbons for the week. Susie, however had a surprise for her competitors. She was pregnant and due to foal any day. The talk of the 4H barn centered around whether or not Susie would have her

Rachel Bates and her ribbons. All of these were won in English classes.

Alayna Bates took her ribbons in Western showmanship and trail riding.

foal before fair end. Susie eventually foaled six days after Fair on Alayna’s birthday. Check her foal out on the 2010 FAHR Foal Showcase. As for Rachel Bates her Fair week was very exciting. This was the first year she was to show her horse, IPA Chief Wahbememe, FAHR #908, in the English riding classes. That Tuesday, Rachel had seven ribbons to show for her efforts, the most ribbons won by any competitor in the 4H Barn that day. Rachel proudly won nine ribbons during Fair Week in English as well as Western Sportsmanship classes. All in all, this particular fair week proved to be anything but or-dinary for the Bates family. From a very pregnant mare, first

place ribbons, first time events, and an amazing total of fourteen ribbons, the Bates are sure to re-member this Fair week for many years to come. Congratulations girls, we are all very proud of you and your Foundation Appaloosas!

Reality At Times Can Be hard To Believe!

By Eddie Street

When I was a small girl the one thing I wanted for my eighth birth-day was an album of a new group called The Beatles. Luckily for me one of my big brothers gifted me that album and I still have it today. I grew up listening to this group and later as a young woman I mar-ried a man who’s favorite group was The Beatles. The very first song our baby daughter learned to sing was Rocky Raccoon by The Beatles, and all of our children and now our grandchildren listen to the timeless music of The Beatles. I am a die-hard lifetime fan! So it was with a sense of unre-ality that I received a call in the Fall of 2009 from Tom Taylor saying that he had received a call from the barn manager of Sir Paul McCartney stating they were look-ing for Foundation Appaloosa horses for sale and could he please recommend a few breed-ers. I heard what he said and yet it didn’t seem real. Not long after my phone conversation with Tom, I was contacted by e-mail by the barn manager asking to please see a current sales list of horses from our farm. I sent her information on several fine mares and a couple of our younger stallions and consid-ered the incident over. It was excit-ing and I felt honored that Tom Taylor thought enough of my stock to recommend me but it was not anything that I thought would go anywhere. Several months past and I had considered the matter closed when I received another e-mail asking if my mare RA Wagtails ShyAnne was still available for sale. I re-sponded that yes she was still available and from then on the ball started rolling.

First step was to get a health in-spection from our local Vet to cer-tify the mare sound and in good health. As we arrived and unloaded Annie I said to my Vet “ I know you are going to think I’m crazy but this mare is going to England to be a part of Paul McCartney’s breeding program.” Okay, so try to imagine that you have just said something that you know is a fact and yet you can’t wrap your brain around it. His re-sponse “I’ve always known you were crazy, but you’re also honest so let’s get this girl ready to go.” The Vet exam was sent and the mare was purchased and arrange-ments were made to send her to Kentucky to meet up with a young stallion that had been purchased from Xen Anderson of Caretaker Appaloosas in Indiana for the thirty day quarantine. I took Annie for several long trips in the horse trailer to make sure she

had no problems traveling. I loaded her into large cardboard boxes, boarded up my breeding stocks and loaded her into that small space. I practiced leading her into small dark areas all in preparation for the trip, but never truly believing that she was really going. My daughter asked me if I was go-ing to tell anyone I had sold one of my mares to Sir Paul McCartney to which I replied “No, she hasn't left yet!” Situations like this don’t hap-pen to ordinary people like me! On May 15th the day had arrived and the shipping company came to get her for the first leg of her jour-ney. As we loaded her partial real-ity set in, but there was still a part of me that had problems believing she would actually leave the United States and that Sir Paul McCartney was her new owner. I think the reality of it sunk in when on the FAHR transfer papers I wrote on the line “New Owner” Sir Paul McCartney. I received an e-mail from England on June 30th with the message “Just to let you know Shyanne ar-rived today. Both the horses trav-eled well and are in great condi-tion. She has settled in well al-ready. I’ve been to check her to-night and she has eaten her hay and is standing very relaxed with her new friends in the stables ei-ther side.” “She has such beautiful markings and a lovely temperament. I’m sure she will fit in just fine. We are very pleased with both horses. They are a lovely addition to the yard.” I would like to give a special thank you to Tom Taylor, who recom-mended our farm. Without his sup-port and in-put this special event would not have occurred.

FAHR Stallion Goes To England!

CTA KIAMICHI RED, FAHR # 907 the FAHR stallion sold to Sir Paul McCartney, and shipped to Eng-land.

Recently I contacted Xen Ander-son of Indiana, as he also had sold a FAHR Appaloosa to Sir Paul McCartney, to ask him his thought and feelings on this event. The fol-lowing is what he had to say.

Here at Caretaker Appaloosas, we have been striving to preserve a breed of horses that were becom-ing genetically extinct from their original founding. We have been blessed to have met breeders of like interest. They have been will-ing to educate us along the way. They have passed along to us this noble breed as pure as they could keep it.

In the fall of 2009 we learned, through FAHR, that there was an-other breeder looking to keep this heritage alive and well in England. We answered there ad and waited. In the spring of 2010 we received

an inquiry from them on our young stallion CTA Kiamichi Red, a five generation colt, rich in foundation blood. There wish for him to carry on into the next generations gives us hope that the breed will not be lost, but enhanced.

In these times of financial unrest it is difficult to stay true to your course and not breed to the mar-ket, what market there is. In this case staying true to ourselves and the breed horse of FAHR has made it possible for others to con-tinue on in this tradit ion. From us here at Caretaker Appa-loosas, Best Wishes to All! Sincerely, Xen and Kris Anderson

GOODBYE ROCKET

Since you were just a little colt, You've been our joy and pride. How we all loved to play with you, Or take a little ride. When you were small and stil l coal black, We thought the world of you, And when your white spots started to show , Our pride just grew and grew. You were always gentle and care-ful When the boys around you played, And even when they got near your feet We were never afraid. One day Jimmie climbed with h is train To a fence rail to reach your back, And you stood so patiently While he used it for a track. Before little Wallie learned to walk People watched in wonder, For he never went around behind you, He just scooted under. Many an hour we've spent with you When the evenings were cool and still. How often now we think of those times And I know we always wil l. . We ho pe that the people who own you now Will learn like we to love you. We hope they'll give you a very good home And take the bes t of care of you. And so, dear Rocket, this is good-bye, Around here you'l l always be missed. And we hope that some proud day we'll see Your name on the winner's list. By Charlotte Seamann

Bargains often turn into lemons and rarely into gems. One $200 bargain led Rattler Six and a me-nagerie of owners down the arena path to blue.

This path encompasses a vari-ety of performance classes and ends with many state champion-ships. But Rat wasn't aimed for such distinction without much prodding and development by fore-sighted people. Foaled in 1963 on a ranch in Hig-gins, Tex., Rattler Six resembled anything but a future star. He

walked on crooked and wobbly legs and carried a head big enough to topple a lesser horse. Owner C. W. Hawkins decided early that life for the horse out of public view would be better for both the ranch and the general public. So, a career began for Rat among the din and sweat of the Hawkins cattle ranch.

Early in 1965 when Rat was a 2-year old, an acquaintance of Haw-kins took fancy to the big gelding. What L'Dynne McLin saw in Rat she didn't know, and Hawkins was even more confused. I didn't take

long for L'Dynne to persuade C.W. to sell the horse for $200.

L'Dynne saw intelligence and spirit in the gelding's eyes. His ex-pression said "You silly human; you think you're smarter than me. " L'Dynne worked with the colt until the next show season. Although rough and inexperienced, the colt proved his superiority. In Rat's first show appearance, he garnered a first and a pound of pride. But Rat wasn't through. L’Dynne took him to several more shows on the rough Oklahoma cir-cuit. Each time Rat won first, end-ing the season undefeated and earning the title of Oklahoma State Halter Champion. When 1967 rolled around, Rat and L’Dynne returned to the cir-cuit. This time Rattler earned enough accumulative points from each show to tuck the state cham-pion aged gelding title under his belt (or should I say halter). The following year, Rat and

L'Dynne hit the road with addi-tional zeal. Rat exceeded his pre-vious earnings by taking state championships in halter, three performance events and, finally, High Point Gelding of Oklahoma. For toppers, he added placings from two events at the National Appaloosa Show. Having reached this level, Rat couldn’t stop. Rarely was a horse able to win at both halter and per-formance, but to win at halter plus several performance events is quite a feat. Rat wasn't in the least outclassed. In 1969 he added State Champion Reining Horse to his list of titles. L'Dynne sold Rat in 1970. During the change-over. Rat and new partner 15-year-old Elaine Cole-man weren't able to make enough shows to compete for state titles. Nevertheless, Rattler showed his winning form again by placing fourth out of 87 entries in aged geldings at the National Appaloosa

Show. But it still wasn't enough. After a strenuous winter condi-

tioning program, Rat faced the 1971 show season in peak condi-tion. With Elaine at the reins, he chalked up six state cham-pionships including the all-around youth title. In route to the honors, Rattler made a supreme showing at the National Show and pranced away with National Champion Showmanship and Reserve Na-tional Champion Youth Western Riding titles. By this time, Rattler had become well known, not only among his Appaloosa peers, but among all the equine breeds. The ugly old gelding that once sold for $200 now proudly listened as his owner turned down offers of $10,000. The most outstanding aspect of Rattler's achievements was not his winnings, now over 150, but the fact that he earned them in over 15 different events! Many horses can claim perfection and more wins in certain events, but few could come

close to his diversity. Rat's talents ranged from youth walk-trot to the cattle classes. He could go through a brisk jumping course and then come right back to win a Western pleasure class. Having come up through the ranks from reject to national champion gave new light to the popular belief that champions are made from money. In 1972, the Champ's success story was cut short. At the age of 9, Rattler was turned out for a well deserved rest while Elaine em-barked upon her college career. Three years later, Elaine realized the waste of Rat's inactivity and gradually brought him back into the ring. With little preparation, Rattler again started to run away with the winnings. But the championship was not to be. Poor conditioning and too much pushing hurt the old horse. Late that August while practicing poles and barrels for the state fair, Rat-tler cracked a bone in his lower leg. His recovery was question-able.

Two years later, Rattler's coat was dulled by gray hairs, but his spirit still gleamed as he nervously paced in his stall. Although unsure of his complete recovery, Elaine realized anxiety was aging the horse. Fortunately, the answer came from down the road where the Manning girls lived. They were talented and in need of a good horse. Elaine knew Rat would be happy with them. She decided they were a perfect match. Now, at age 14, Rattler is stronger than ever. With Shelly, age 10, Lori, 15, and Stacey, 17, he is again show-ing his winning form. This year alone, they won 11 state youth championships and four state high point titles in three different clubs.

GREENWOOD FARMS

Some of the young Appaloosas to be offered at the Greenwood Farm’s sale May 29.

Home of Appaloosas

By Shirley Ratisseau Dimmick

It was a fine, sunny after-

noon and we were standing in front of a picturesque white rail fence that just fitted in with the atmosphere of Greenwood Farms in San Antonio, Texas.

We were watching the horses -the "we" being Lewis J. Moorman, Jr., owner of the pleasant 1,110 acres of gently rolling hills that form Green-wood Farms; John E. Davis, the manager and trainer; Benito, the groom and assis-tant; and my husband and my-self. Many of the horses were outstanding champions. Greenwood Farms is a prime example of what a good horse

breeding farm can be. Moorman, beginning with his purchase of Yellow Jacket in 1961, has built up a line of horses that is the envy of men who have been in the business for years. Johnny Davis, a typi-cal lean, lanky and laconic Texas cowboy, trains these fine Appaloosas and they respond amazingly well.

Greenwood Farms, the site of a first production and partial reduction auction sale May 29, is a peaceful place. Oak, pecan and cedar dot the landscape and the visitor can immediately sense that special "feel" which denotes a love for their horses on the part of the folks who re-side here.

One of the horses behind the white rail fence, a big, golden Appaloosa with beautiful head

and conformation, nervously alert ears and a white blaze down his nose, was the famous Yellow .Jacket. Many admirers and followers of the Appaloosa breed will have seen his picture in color in "Appaloosa, The Spotted Horse In Art and His-tory," by Dr. Francis Haines.

In stalls and pastures, and just about everywhere one looked, Appaloosas, all beauti-ful, could be seen. Moorman, a quiet yet forceful man, esti-mates that he has about 150 horses. Since the Appaloosa dreams of my husband and myself, probably as those of many readers, have had more ups and downs than a short stringed yo-yo, I was a little awed, and said so.

Moorman laughed, then, as

26

Yellow Jacket put his head over the top bar of the fence and nuzzled his owner, ex-plained: "We've all got to start some-where. You know, when I bought Yellow Jacket in 1961, I was aware that Carl Miles owned good horses. I was thinking about buying some Joker B stock but I took one look at Yel low Jacket and fell in love with him. He was a coming two-year-old, untrained, but there was just something about him. The whole thing was set-tled when the foreman on my brother-in-law's (the late Appa-loosa breeder, Tom Slick) ranch said he would buy him if I passed him up."

Moorman went on to explain that Miles had planned to show the horse at the Fort Worth Livestock Show and, after buy-ing him, he agreed to take de-livery at that city. Young Yellow Jacket (by Whistle Britches back to Comanche, out of a Quarter mare back to Whimpy P 1) got the gate. Three years later, at that same show, he was Grand Champion stallion.

"Johnny Davis trained him for performance and made him an ROM roping horse," Moor-man said. "As a three-year-old he was the 1st place stallion of '59 at the National Show, Springfield, Ill., and, of course, many times thereafter Grand Champion and Reserve at halt-er and roping, plus wins at stake racing. Yellow Jacket was the first horse to be both Texas Appaloosa Champion and ROM. He'll become per-manent, too, this year, when all of his second colt crop is regi s-tered."

I found out later that he'd earned it, by producing 80 per-cent color in get. Out of the first crop produced, two became champions, while their sire re-mained active in the Texas Top Ten at halter, stakes, roping and first aged stallion.

One of his daughters, a beautiful filly whose name, Blue Jacket, belies her color, is al-ready a halter champion. (In 1964, chosen as first 1963 filly by the Comanche Breeder's Association; finished 4th in 1964 Texas Top Ten; and 1st in 1964 South Texas Club.) At two she's got a lot of develop-

ment ahead. Benito "vas saddling another of "the horses." Queen's Dandy, F-4872, prior to putting him through his paces for the day. This one, a big showy, dark bay with perfect markings and a tiny trickle of a star on his forehead, (along with Blue Jacket) is my personal favorite. He was playful and raring to go! And he can go! ! ! I've watched him running in the stake race and the sheer joy of "watching him "stretch out" was more beauti ful than the ribbons he won. Johnny, the trainer, phrased it just right when he said Queen's Dandy was "fast enough to run a hole in the wind."

This former star of the North-west lost none of his sparkle and shine after moving to Texas. Northwest Champion race horse in 1961, he won races from 220 yards to the one-half mile. He has won at the barrels, and pole bending in open competition: He has

placed in reining and pleasure classes and won both per-formance and racing champi-onships. His colts are out-standing, winning many ri b-bons in the best competition. Queen's Dandy was the top selling horse in the 1963 San Antonio Livestock Exposition sale. Truly "color on the run," his breeding is 9/16ths Thor-oughbred; and he will build his own bloodline. Among his col-orful progeny are the North-west Champion halter horse of 1961 and the 1st place Yearling at the 1963 )National Show.

"This spring we'll be having our first colts by Queen's Dandy out of racing Quarter Horse mares carrying the blood of Johnny Dial, Joe Reed, My Texas Dandy, and Leo. If we're lucky, some of these colts will find their way to the tracks," Moorman pointed out.

We watched some of the nu-merous new foals playing tag around their mothers, in one of the pastures and I asked him how he began his fine brood mare line. "I began buying mares with ex-cellent bloodlines. The first were unregistered mares from the West Pyle Iron Mountain Ranch, carrying the blood of such greats as Peter McCue, Old Sorrel, Midnight, Dan Waggoner, Joe Moore and so on. We were very fortunate in being able to get a lot of mares from the Bell Ranch of Du-rango, Mex ico, a ranch long noted for raising some of the finest horses in Mexico, and their base, years back, was mares from the world famous Cananea Ranch, bred right back to the best of the King Ranch stallions, and so were of basic King Ranch breeding. These mares are subject to reg-istration in the A.Q.H.A., but by the time we had importation problems solved, and they were safe in our pastures, the books had been closed."

As an Appaloosa breeder, this was unimportant, but it shows the. quality, of breeding Greenwood Farms used as a base for their planned program. It is obvious that Lewis Moorman is quite proud of that “Bell Mare” appearing on the dams side of their pedigrees..

"I also got some Appaloosa

27

mares”, Moorman continued. "and concentrated on the Co-manche bloodline. They carried the bloodlines of Comanche, Joker B, Hard Twist T. B., Sil-ver Leopard, Chief of Fourmile, Red Dog, Simcoe's Chinook and other greats. Too, I've al -ways selected stallions with the strongest Appaloosa bloodlines and characteristics to comple-ment our mares,"

"We’ve added a few Quarter mares with racing blood in them, and one is a grand-daughter of the famous racing horse, Johnny Dial, who in his day was the best. Another mare is the granddaughter of Three-Bars, who is known to every-one." Johnny rode up on another of the horses, a fine stallion. Hawk's Domino Devil Dancer, a royally bred permanent stal-lion (goes back to the great Co-manche 3 or 4 times) is a col-orful, big (16 hands) Grand Champion at halter and per-formance with the endurance of a bulldozer. When he was purchased at the Springfield National Appaloosa Show he was the high selling horse there.

"How's he doing?" asked Moorman.

"He's doing real good," John replied. "He'll be in fine shape for the May sale, but I sure hate to see him go. He leaned over and took my hat off awhile ago, and waved it around in his teeth just for the heck of it. Yep, he's doing good, real good."

Lewis Moorman's eyes shone and he smiled happily. “I'll have some fine horses for the sale in May. This business of having a sale is heartbreak-ing in a way, and of course we'll be selling a lot of horses we'd like to keep, but I think that if we have a sale and folks know it's honest, they know too, that they can buy some good horses."

We walked back to the fence and Moorman continued. "Red Red Robin, our fine Quarter stallion out of Robin Reed, will sell, too, along with some ex-ceptional Appaloosa mares bred to him and to our great running and halter horse, Fore-cast (AAA and AQHA Cham-pion). Other good stallions sell-ing in May are Fourmile Joker (who, as the name implies, is the grandson of Chief of Four-mile and a great grandson of Joker B) and Dandy Reed, Queen's Dandy's son.

“When people buy horses they usually want a horse that will run, and we've tried to breed speed and conformation and 'do-ability.' Sometimes you get it all in one package. There will be a lot of 3-in-1 packages at the sale -that's the mare and colt with the mare bred back to one of the champion stallions."

I mentally counted up my life's savings in the antique sugar bowl and the combined total of my four children's piggy banks and figuring I was still short, kept listening.

"Then there will be some mares who possibly haven't foaled by sale time."

We walked about the grounds of the farm, where the May sale is to be held. "I'd like to live here someday," and Moorman looked with just pride at the peaceful scene. "I have three children, two boys 19 and 22, and a girl 16. When the children are grown I guess we'll just move out here. Sometimes at dinner I leave the city and take a swing out here just to see the horses, particularly now when the baby Appaloosas come. It's sort of like shooting dice, this Appa-loosa breeding. You never know what you'll get, and if they are good, if they will de-velop."

A good share of a horse's development rests in the hands of his trainer. Johnny Davis,

the trainer at Greenwood Farms, won't talk much, but he does a heap of riding, and most of the horses at the Farm have had the good benefit of Johnny's patient and excep-tional training.

Johnny says, "I never rode a horse that couldn't do some-thing. and I never rode a horse didn't like. There's something in every horse that I like. I train a horse every day, unless he starts souring on me; then you have to back off, let him rest, then pick up and go again with him."

During the sale on May 29, there will be at least 70 fillies, colts and bred mares. The sale will be well advertised, well managed and expertly con-ducted. Greenwood Farms is noted for its hospitality and the sale will be conducted in such a manner as to enhance and enlighten the interest of the Ap-paloosa breed.

"There'll be no pull-outs," Moorman said. "If folks come quite a ways to the sale, and we have an honest sale with some good buys, they will be satisfied. Most of these horses are darned good ones, but I can only pasture so many and have to sell some. You get ter-ribly attached to them, or someone in your family does, and you hate to sell them. Of course, you can always raise some more!"

"After the sale I plan to con-centrate on Yellow Jacket and Queen's Dandy with young Joker Jeff, Blue Jacket and Yellow Boy coming along. Then too, there's the acquisi-tion of the great running Quar-ter horse, Forecast, whose ser-vices will be available to Appa-loosa breeders at Greenwood Farms next year. Also the Co-manche and Joker B bred mares along with Appaloosa and Quarter mares represent-ing the best in racing.

"I want some speed and per-

A Foretelling Of What Was To Come??????

From Spotted Forum, Appa-loosa News, October, 1978

Bloodlines Are Still Important In the July issue of Appaloosa News is an article on Sheikh F-1795 which is very interesting and very welcome.

However, the outstanding flaw in the article is that Borkaan, his sire, is identified as a foundation Appaloosa when in fact Borkaan was a full Arabian and known in some circles today as a spotline Arabian who traced to other spot-lines in Egyptian and desert breeding.

Borkaan is also known as the sire of Peter K, grandsire of Tay-lor's Sundance and Feather No. 82 and many other good early Ap-paloosas. With respect to blood-line information, the Appaloosa News was much more thorough when the Appaloosa was not as generally accepted as it is today. Perhaps there are members of the staff who feel that today eve-ryone knows that Appaloosas have good bloodlines, so why be-labor the point or bore people with detailed· information, when they would rather glance through the articles and look at the pictures.

To an extent this is true, there

are always many readers who leaf through a magazine, set it down and forget it, but there are many others who come back and reread and some even file information of interest for further reference.

For these more avid readers and those growing in that direction, I feel that our breed journal should make a concentrated effort to in-clude as much bloodline informa-tion as possible and in as interest-ing a manner as possible.

Many Appaloosa enthusiasts have few other sources of informa-tion other than the Appaloosa News in this area.

Unless more pedigree informa-tion and the study of it is encour-aged, it will not take too long be-fore we will have a generation of owners within ApHC who are in effect "bloodline illiterates": except of course, those who go out on their own to seek this information from other sources. by JOHN L. BAKER

formance ability in my horses, also potential halter champions, and I believe we have the stal-lions and the mares to do just that!"

I recounted the antique sugar bowl, the kids' piggy banks and added next month's grocery budget. Maybe if it was a small one.

I asked him what he liked best about the horse breeding business.

"I care more about the esthe- tics, I guess. A lot of horses, that is some kinds of horses, are not all good to look at." He stopped by another railed fence and patted his Yellow Boy and Joker Jeff on their noses. "Colts like these and Blue Jacket are not only good to look at, but they have the blood and are performing and working horses as well."

I was even more impressed, and I was already a believer in Greenwood Farms. At the re-cent Livestock Exposition here in San Antonio, I had walked with my husband, Dean, beside Johnny and Benito as they led Yellow Jacket, Queen's Dandy, Devil Dancer. Blue Jacket and Yellow Boy back to the horse barns. I wanted to just visit. and stand there and look for a while. Along the way, other peo-ple. with or without horses, stopped and watched. "There's the Greenwood Farm horses," they’d say. "That's them all right." and they too, followed, just to stand and look for a while.

Moorman s topped and leaned against the fence railing. He looked across the pastures, away to the hills almost a half mile or so away. Those brown eyes are remarkable. He spot-ted some of the horses now be-ing exercised, although there must have been 125 other horses scattered around, graz-ing, galloping, running or sleep-ing.

“There’s the horses,” he said.

FAHR Transfer Questions Answered

Q 1: What is the procedure for transferring ownership of a horse? A: Receipt of a completed and signed Transfer Report from the current owner, the original FAHR certificate of Registration and $7.50 for the transfer. Q 2: Will FAHR accept a Bill of Sale? A: Yes, The Bill of Sale must con-tain the date of sale, the name and complete address of the buyer, the signature of the seller, their ad-dress, and the registered name and number of the horse being transferred. You will also need to present an ApHC certificate indi-cating the horse in question has been transferred to them. Besides the Transfer fee there will also be an additional charge to create a duplicate FAHR certificate for the already FAHR registered horse. Q 3: I purchased a horse and there is more than one transfer with the certificate. Do I have to pay for each transfer and mem-bership of each buyer? A: No, Only you as the buyer are only responsible for the current transfer.

Q 4: What needs to be done if I was not given the FAHR regis-tration papers when I bought the Horse? A: A properly completed and signed Transfer Report, a signed statement from current owner de-scribing the efforts made to obtain the certificate, proof of ownership such as a copy of ApHC certificate and $7.50 for the Transfer and the required fee for the duplicate cer-tificate. ****************************************

Mistaken Identity

Q: When I sent my papers into the ApHC for registration on my Appaloosa the color description they gave my mare was gray. She is a few-spot with small black spots and varnish marks. I have discussed this with the Registrar several times but they will not change the color de-scription and I was not given a reason why. I am in the process of getting her registered with the FAHR but I don’t want the color descrip-tion to be what the ApHC has termed as gray. What do I need to do to insure my mare gets the right color description as well as coat pattern?

A: The FAHR implemented a rule several years back allowing the Registrar to determine coat pattern and color of each individual horse being registered, regardless of the description given on the ApHC pa-pers. When filling out your registration application it is recommended that you send in current pictures of your mare and also any pictures you may have of her as a foal to help the Registrar determine that yes this is a few-spot mare with a bay/black spots and not as a gray horse. *************************************** Accuracy is Everything! Q: I have several horses that are part of the Pratt mare mix-up. My ApHC papers have been cor-rected. What do I need to do to get my FAHR papers fixed? I had to send in all new pictures of all the horses involved. Do I need to send more pictures of these horses to the FAHR? A: Send a copy of your new ApHC papers in along with the FAHR certificate and a new and cor-rected certificate will be issued. No pictures are necessary to issue corrected papers. FAHR will be happy to issue these new papers at no additional cost.

To all FAHR members now planning to campaign their FAHR registered horses in AERC or an NATRC, GLDRA, UMECTRA, ApDRA, ECTRA, SEDRA, or other sanctioned ride program:

Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry now offers a Dis-tance Program for both Endurance and Competitive Trail.

Write to FAHR, Inc., P.O. Box 1134, Middlebury, IN 46540 for the application or download it from the FAHR web-site, at: www.foundationapp.org There are also application forms available from past issues of FAHR Tidings.

FAHR DISTANCE PROGRAM PATCH

Each participant in Endurance or the Competitive Trail divisions and to each Saddle Log participant upon submission of at least 100 hours, will receive the FAHR Distance Program Patch featured below.

Chevrons will be presented upon completion of each mileage or Saddle hour level.

31

The Saddle Log Program is a great way for you to earn awards for any time you spend in the saddle on an Appaloosa. We have a program for adults and a program for youth.

This program recognizes the need for personal achievement for the individual who daily or weekly enjoys the benefits gained from riding. Whether you ride out on the trail, train and compete in shows, ride in parades, perform ranch work, or whatever your pleasure, those hours will count towards earning great awards.

Qualifications for the Saddle Log Program: 1. Credit for saddle log hours will not be given nor will records

of hours completed be kept on any eligible person until he or she is enrolled in the saddle log program. To enroll, a program application must be completed and returned to FAHR along with the annual filing fee of $15 for adults and a one time filing fee of $20 for youth. Your FAHR mem-bership fees must also be paid for each qualifying year.

2. For adults, saddle log eligibility is for one year, with each riding season starting on December 1st (preceding year) and running through November 30th of that ride year. For youth, eligibility begins with the riding year in which FAHR receives your application and runs until you are over the age of 18 as of December 1st of the up coming ride season.

3. All Appaloosas used must be registered with FAHR. Horses used need not be owned by the rider logging the hours.

4. Logged hours must be recorded on official forms provided by and available from FAHR.

5. Inactive records will only be kept for maximum of five years. After such time records will be deactivated.

Awards in the Saddle Log Program: 1. Riders will receive an official FAHR Saddle Log Program for

completion of the first 100 hours of riding. 2. Official Chevron Bars will be awarded upon completion of

100,250, 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, and 2500 hours of riding. For more information regarding this program, please contact: FAHR, INC. Saddle Log Coordinator Deanna Brown 1594 Turkey Rd. Gladewater, TX 75647 903-759-5649 cell ph# 903-220-3576 E-mail: [email protected] (Deanna Brown) (Forms are available for download from the FAHR Website)

Attention—Stallion Owners

For those with FAHR registered stallions and members using stallions creating FAHR eligible foals, stallion reports are now being accepted by the registrar. FAHR Annual Stallion Breeding Report Forms are available upon request or can be downloaded from the FAHR web-site as well. There is no current deadline, penalty or fee, for the filing of these reports. FAHR is now accepting: All annual breeding reports from 1999 and prior, for stallions under this category. Currently FAHR will still allow a stallion owner to submit a copy of their ApHC Breeding reports in lieu of filing the FAHR breeding report form.
