    The reasons why groups of people, orcountries, fall out are much the same asthe reasons why you fall out with yourfriends only on a bigger scale.

    1. The trouble beginsDifferences become exaggerated. People takeattitudes us and them.

    2. Open hostilityEach side looks for allies. Things start to get violent.

    3. DeadlockEach side believes they have a just cause. Theviolence worsens.

    4. Search for a way outBoth sides want to solve the problem without loss offace.

    5. Conflict resolutionBoth sides look at underlying causes, and worktogether to reach agreement.

    6. Working togetherBoth sides face up to what has happened. They sharetheir grief. This stage needs sensitivity and courage.

    There are many areas of conflict all

    over the world.

    Sometimes the problems are shortlived, but often people have to live withdiscord over a period of many years.

    The United Nations (UN) was founded in1945 to keep international peace and to

    encourage member countries to solveinternational problems together.

    Most countries of the world belong to theUN. They send delegates to meetings atits headquarters in New York.

    The UN promotes respect for humanrights, and aims to maintain peace in theworld and to develop friendly relations

    between all nations.

    The UN sends peacekeeping forces

    to regions of the world to preventconflict and to keep the peace atthe end of wars. UN forces are

    provided voluntarily by membercountries.

    They wear blue headgear and painttheir vehicles white so thateveryone can identify them.

    Peace Direct is another charity working forpeace.

    It works by supporting local people who are

    working for peace in practical ways in areasof conflict.

    Peace Direct promotes and funds their work

    and hopes to learn from it.

    Peace Direct know that local knowledge isvital.

    Every conflict is different.

    Politicians who live and work miles awaycannot have the same knowledge of thehistory and culture of the people, as those

    who are living there.

    Peace Direct say that anyone can be a peacebuilder.

    It could be women in a market, determined to stop violence by

    holding meetings so that arguments can be resolved.

    It could be local business men, raising money to buy backweapons, so that there are less arms in the community.

    It could be a group of young people setting up a radio station

    to enable people to talk about how different communities cansuccessfully live together

    It could be a former military commander, using his influence toturn people away from violence, and towards peace.

    It could be a teacher, developing a curriculum for peace.

    It could be an imam and a priest, working together to helpcommunities of different religions understand each otherbetter.
