A LONG standing gym is lookingexcitedly towards the future afterreceiving investment enabling it toupgrade and enhance facilities.

Life@Whitehouse is part of theTelford Whitehouse Hotel, which hasrecently been taken over by NewCollege; with money set aside to beinvested into the leisure offering.

Planned improvements include anew range of gym equipment, newswimming pool ceiling and upgradedlockers in the changing rooms tobring the club up to date and help itcompete with rivals in a crowdedmarket place.

Leisure club manager MarkBeamson explained: “We are 10 yearsold and were created when the foot-ball club was redeveloped with ahotel onsite. But just before comple-tion it went into administration andthe club was taken over by a support-ers’ trust.

“The bank repossessed the hoteland it remained in their hands untilNovember 2013, when it was takenover by New College. During thatperiod we couldn’t invest, so market-ing had to be things which cost littleor nothing.”

With limited money to spend, thegym had to be creative in order tocreate a strong brand and keep upwith an increasing number of clubsmoving in to Telford, many of whichcould afford to splash out on the lat-est equipment and marketing cam-paigns.

But a strong focus on customerexperience and service has helpedthem thrive, as has forging links withlocal media to publicise great mem-ber stories and spread the word aboutthe club.

Mark added: “There are a lot ofclubs here but when a new operatorcomes into town, there is a lot of mar-keting spend on health and fitness, which creates an opportunity for us.

“We get lots of different groupscoming in and have a really positiverole in the community.

“Our USP without question is ourstaff and the ability they have tointeract with our customers. They arevery engaged and aligned with thebusiness.”

The customer service element con-tinues throughout the member jour-ney and is something the team atLife@Whitehouse are so good at, theywere shortlisted in the customer serv-ice category at last year’s National

Fitness Awards.Mark added: “You have to put

opportunities in place for people totell us what their issues are.

I text everyone when they join towelcome them to the club and let

them know if they have any problemsthey can contact me directly on thatnumber.

“If you can make the beginning partof their membership as great as possi-ble then the rest follows.”

CAN YOUR CLUB FLY THE FLAG FOR YOUR LOCAL AREA?4 www.nationalfitnessawards.co.uk

A LUXURY club in Ealing is doingthings differently, with a definedfocus on design and service keepingmembers happy and business buoy-ant.

Eden Fitness opened in 2007; aim-ing to bring a high end fitness offer-ing to the area, combined with givingmembers the personal levels of cus-tomer service which independentgyms can do so well.

The club focuses heavily on design, with every area considered carefullyto ensure the use of space is max-imised and members feel immersedin the Garden of Eden theme andexperience.

Club manager Charlie Bourneexplained: “Design is really importantto us – a leisure club doesn’t have tolook like a gym. The fitness equip-ment should be secondary to howpeople feel in each area.

“We are trying to be different. Everyinch has been thought of. We’ve gonefor a boutique, design led feel, whichmakes the space much more interest-ing.”

With increasing levels of local com-petition, the club has also workedhard to fend off the arrival of a budgetgym just down the road.

Instead of panicking and cuttingprices, they decided to reinvestalmost £50,000 into the facility – andraise membership prices from £62 to

£74 per month. When doing so they made sure they

highlighted to members exactly whatthey got for their money in terms ofhigh quality equipment, a wide rangeof facilities – including a swimmingpool and cocktail bar/coffee area –and most importantly the levels ofknowledge and service offered bystaff.

And it proved to be a gamble whichpaid off.

Charlie added: “We lost five per centof our turnover almost immediately. But we focused on service and it tooknine months for the membership toreturn back to what it was. And it’sbeen at 2,000 for the last two years.”

A recent investment in new kit from

Matrix Fitness is also proving popularwith members, as are the extravagantthemed parties held at the club sever-al times a year, which give membersand staff a chance to interact witheach other and let their hair down.

Charlie added: “I really like whatMatrix are doing and their technologyis up there with the best. Our 50 plusmembership is also really happy withusing the equipment, which is impor-tant.

“We’re also introducing somethingwhere every member of staff has touse the gym a minimum number oftimes.

“This will bring us closer to ourmembership as they will be becomingeven more a part of the club.”

Luxury club does things differentlyDesign is key at Eden Fitness, with every area considered carefully to ensure members feel immersed in the Garden of Eden theme and experience.

OVER 80 per cent of gym memberswho attend fitness classes prefer tolisten to music by original artists dur-ing their classes rather than cover ver-sions, PPL research claims.

PPL, which works on behalf of over90,000 record companies and per-formers to license recorded musicplayed in public, found that whenmade to choose, 87 per cent of cur-rent and ex gym members (those whohad been a member within the lastfive years) that have attended a fitnessclass within the last year said theyprefer to listen to music by originalartists over cover versions or sound-alikes when working out at a fitnessclass.

Of that 87 per cent, 52 per cent saidit was because they find it moreenjoyable, with 51 per cent saying it isof better quality.

The research also showed currentand ex gym members who have notundertaken a fitness class in the lastyear also valued original artist music;with 96 per cent stating a preferencefor it when working out.

Chris Dickson, health and fitnessdevelopment manager at Xcite, whichprovides sports and leisure servicesfor West Lothian Council, said: “Weget feedback on our music all the timefrom our clients.

“It is absolutely central to theatmosphere and we would struggle asan industry without good music towork with.

“When the changes to the PPL tariffwere first introduced, I did look into

alternative options and cover versions– no one is ever happy about pricesgoing up. However, when we played itin our classes, I could see that gymgo-ers weren’t engaging with it as well, and we got a lot of negative feedback.

“We want artists to continue makinggood music for us to be able to enjoyin our centres, which is why we thor-oughly recommend original artistmusic.”

PPL director of operations ChristineGeissmar added: “Our research showsmusic by original artists can bringmany benefits to gym goers.

“All we ask is that any business usingmusic is legally compliant by obtain-ing a PPL and PRS for Music licence, ensuring that the performers andcompanies who create and invest inthe recordings are paid fairly for theirwork.” Do your members prefer originalartist music or do they not notice adifference when cover versions areplayed? Business booming as ownerreveals big plans for brandBy Christina Eccles

BUSINESS is booming for a SouthYorkshire gym owner who wouldeventually like to open 10 clubs underhis successful brand.

Daniel Summerson opened the firstBe Fitness club on the outskirts ofBarnsley just under three-and-a-halfyears ago.

This was followed last year with asecond, bigger and better club – Be XFitness – in Sheffield, which hasalready attracted attention from localprofessional sports teams and fans ofCrossFit, as well as general gymgoers, thanks to its wide range of facilitiesand affordable pricing.

The first club is also doing well, witha prominent high street location anda community focus encouraging peo-ple through the doors.

Daniel, who set up brand, with abusiness partner, explained: “We haveworked in gyms since we were 19 or20 and had always said let’s open ourown. We started saving up and men-tally planned to do it years ago.

“We bought this building andthought it would be a great testerbecause it’s not too big. It’s a goodlocal community gym, which peopleuse and enjoy.

“This was a test and it worked. Weoriginally wanted to open lots on theoutskirts but realised in the currentclimate, areas like this don’t have a lot

of money. So we decided [with thesecond club] to compete with the bigboys.”

Over in Sheffield, Be X Fitnessreached a membership of almost1,000 people within three months ofopening and Daniel is already think-ing about further expansion, withplans in the pipeline to open a thirdsite – also in the city – by the end ofthe year.

He added: “We want people to havefun on the gym floor and to be able togive them lots of advice and support.

What we want to try and bring back isthat personal side – but it has to befun.

“This is our second one but we wantto get to 10 – that’s always been thegoal.

“By the end of the year we want athird club, but it has to be the rightsite, of the right size and at the rightprice. We are independent so they aresome of the things we have to thinkabout.

“We’re really pleased with how it’sgoing. It’s long hours but worth it.”

Daniel Summerson wants to open 10 clubs under the Be Fitness name.

NEW TO THE INDUSTRY BUT ALREADY MAKING AN IMPACT?12 www.nationalfitnessawards.co.uk

A family run gym in Ayrshire, which prides itself on offering that all important personal touch, is celebrating 30successful years in business Workout discovered the secrets of its lasting success.

MRC Fitness has been part of theDalry community for the last threedecades after originally being openedby director Lorraine Wallace’s parentsMalcolm and Helen Clark.

The business started off in the base-ment of the family home, afterMalcolm – himself a successful body-builder – decided to follow his dreamof owning a gym. Over the years, theclub became more and more popularand the family had to graduallyincrease space to accommodate thegrowing business. This eventually ledto a move in 1996 to bigger premises, where they have been ever since.

Lorraine explained: “Dad was

involved in bodybuilding for yearsand his aim was always to own a gym.

“It just took off over the years andwe have third generations coming tothe gym now – sons and grandsons ofmembers.”

This year, the club is celebrating its30th birthday and to mark the mile-stone achievement decided to organ-ise an ambitious charity event – rais-ing over £11,000 for Erskine Hospital.

When the business turned 20, staffran a 24-hour sponsored workout, sodecided this time, they would go evenbigger and better, staging a successful30-hour event.

A dozen members took part in the

challenge, alongside support fromemployees, local businesses andother members who came down tocheer them on and make donations.

Lorraine added: “It was a fabulousevent and a great weekend. We start-ed of at 12pm on the Saturday andended at 6pm on Sunday.

“Everybody has been so supportiveand we raised over £11,000 forErskine Hospital, so they were reallydelighted.”

Creating a family friendly atmos-phere has always been important atthe club and even though Lorrainetook over the business from her dadtwo years ago, he still plays an impor-

tant role – coming in to train himselfand offering advice to members whorefer to him as ‘the guru.’

She added: “We’ve always been partof the community and held charityevents. We also hold social events, such as a Christmas ceilidh, and Itake a team of girls to the Race forLife.

“There are a number of memberswho have been with us throughout allthat time. We treat everybody as anindividual and as someone we wantto get to know. We’ve always wantedto be a family orientated gym and forpeople to feel part of that family –and get that personal touch.”

Hundreds of key industry figures gathered at The International Centre in Telford for this year’s ukactive FlameConference, where they were treated to an inspirational line-up of speakers, thought-provoking break-out sessionsand practical top tips to take away on how to improve their own businesses. Workout’s Christina Eccles and OliviaTaylor joined them...

THE theme of this year’s conferencewas ‘today’s vision, tomorrow’s reali-ty’, which encouraged delegates toexamine the future of the physicalactivity sector; identifying trends towatch out for and taking a closer lookat the difference they can make with-in their own organisations.

First up to the main stage was theday’s keynote speaker – renownedfuturologist Magnus Lindkvist – whospoke about the two types of change, horizontal – taking something whichalready exists out to a wider popula-tion – and vertical – where somethingpreviously thought impossiblebecomes a reality.

He urged the audience to be bravein their choice of whether to competeor create in business – telling themthey shouldn’t be afraid of makingmistakes or overcoming setbacks ontheir journeys to success.

Also on the speaker line up was JoFairley, founder of organic chocolatecompany Green and Blacks, whorevealed her tips on how to build asuccessful ethical business – and hervision of ‘changing the world onesquare of chocolate at a time.’

Jo, whose career has been inspired

by the mantra, “If you don’t do it,you’ll never know what would havehappened if you had done it”, said theindustry can play an important role inlooking after the environment andbecoming more responsible.

And even though it can seem like adaunting process to start with, busi-nesses should not let that put themoff getting the ball rolling when itcomes to sustainability.

Her tips for operators included: Brainstorm ideas with staff – andmembers and clients who may oftenhave a different perspective to peoplewithin your organisation. Introduce a reward scheme for sus-tainable ideas put forward which arethen implemented into the business. Encourage members to tally up themiles they clock up on your equip-ment – for example running on atreadmill – and get them sponsoredfor charity. Get members/clients exercisingoutdoors to appreciate green spaces. Reduce your club’s carbon footprintthrough initiatives such as sensorlights or serving Fairtrade tea and cof-fee in your cafe area.

She added: “The fitness industry can

do a great deal in terms of corporatesocial responsibility and the environ-ment.

“People are afraid to start thisprocess because you can’t be perfectat it overnight. But the process beginswith just starting.

“Feeling that a company is making adifference is great for staff retentionand when people feel a greater con-nection with the company they areworking for, they are less inclined toleave.”

Founder of freerunning SebastienFoucan was also among the day’sspeakers, explaining why understand-ing freerunning – or parkour – canhelp people think about their ownattitudes to boundaries and difficul-ties in other areas of their lives.

He believes the industry could domore to implement a playful elementin to exercise, encouraging partici-pants to think in terms of play andhaving fun, rather than seeing work-ing out as something they have to do.

He added: “Everything should beabout play.

“In society, we are very goal and per-formance orientated but play equalspassion – and passion can reveal tal-

ent.“We are born to walk and run and

climb. Gyms can be very limited aseverything is fixed and contained.Play brings you to different environ-ments.

“Everything we are is influenced bythe environment. If you want tochange people, you have to changethe environment.”

Rounding off the day’s main speakersessions was ex-England rugby player– and World Cup winner – WillGreenwood who encouraged dele-gates to think about the importanceof teamwork, whether that be in asports team preparing to play in amajor tournament or in a businessenvironment.

He also urged visitors to think aboutthe small changes they could make –those critical non essentials – whichwould drive them closer to their goalsand build confidence.

He added: “It’s not about getting thebest individuals, it’s about celebratingthe best skills set through differentpairings and combinations.

“We knew doing 100 things, one percent better would make us worldchampions.”

800 people gathered to honour the best in the industry at the annual ukactive and Matrix Flame Awards (left). Earlier, delegates heard from England World Cup winner Will Greenwood.

Delegates urged to examinesector’s future at conference

THIS year’s Flame was a great success, according to CEO David Stalker, withukactive receiving great feedback fromattendees.

He added: “When you run an eventas successful as Flame was last year, you approach the next year with sometrepidation that the bar is already pret-ty high and it’ll take something prettyamazing to top it. But this year’s Flamereally was truly special, starting with apicture perfect day for golf and net-working.

“At the conference itself, keynotespeakers from such a broad range ofvocations pulled the sector audiencefrom their comfort zone challenging usall to think differently, take risks, createmore and collaborate more to be

more. The panel and breakout sessionsgave people the opportunity to deepdive into specific topics with some ofthe biggest innovators in those areas.

“We also used the conference tolaunch National Fitness Day to thesector and we’re delighted with peo-ple’s enthusiasm and eagerness to getinvolved in that on September 26.

“The awards and Ball of Fire in theevening captivated guests who were allin the mood for celebrating the indus-try’s ‘best in class’. And to top it all offthe social media noise and engage-ment around the whole event fromgolf day, to pre-conference reception, conference and awards was phenome-nal with everyone wanting to be partof the conversation.”

Flame “really was truly special”THE day culminated in the ukactiveand Matrix Flame Awards and Ball ofFire, where 800 people gathered tohonour the best in the industry.

A PROFESSIONAL bodyguard and fit-ness instructor is set to launch hismilitary inspired endurance race intothe mainstream following the successof several secret events.

The HQrecon events have beendesigned to test both physical fitnessand mental agility, with the aim of thegame to infiltrate as many ‘zones’ aspossible within a 3.5-hour time limitto collect intelligence codes locatedwithin each zone.

Each code collected equals points, however, ‘the hunters’ – professionallytrained security personnel – will be inpursuit. If participants get caught in azone, they lose points and are sen-tenced to a time penalty in the formof an energy-sapping 15-minute mili-tary-style circuit training session ledby an ex Royal Marine.

Founder Will Bayley, a bodyguard

and instructor with the British KravMaga Association, said: “The popular-ity of fitness and endurance eventsthat offer something in addition tojust running or cycling, or following alinear path, has grown hugely inrecent years, however, I believed therewas a gap in the market for a fitnessevent that truly combined both aphysical and mental challenge, andthat offered a competitive element.

“HQrecon offers all of those thingsand more, and the ‘secret’, small scaleevents we have held in the past havebeen hugely successful. We are there-fore very excited about hosting ourfirst public events later this year.”

The first HQrecon will take place atCharlton Park in Wiltshire onSeptember 6, with the second event atCornbury Park in Oxfordshire onSeptember 27.

CAN YOUR CLUB FLY THE FLAG FOR YOUR LOCAL AREA?22 www.nationalfitnessawards.co.uk

Why Ricky thinks you shouldget involved in the NFAs ...LAST issue we revealed that boxinglegend Ricky Hatton will be co-host-ing this year’s National Fitness Awardswith Caroline Pearce.

This month, we talk to Ricky aboutwhy he thinks operators should getinvolved with the event, what impactthe fitness industry has had on his lifeand discover the benefits for clubswhich get on board with The HattonAcademy.

Why would you encourage gym owners toenter the National Fitness Awards?I think everyone who works hardshould try and be recognised for it.These awards cover so many cate-gories so I think there’s something forevery gym. If they put the work in,they should have the opportunity toget a little something back.

What advice can you give clubs about howto make their business stand out from thecompetition?Just keep doing new things. I think it’seasy to get stuck in a rut of doing thesame things over again when youreally need to freshen things up tokeep people interested.

If your gym isn’t offering somethingnew, you can bet the one down theroad is and it won’t be long before

your customers start going there.I think you’re always learning as

well. If you can meet new people, youcan pick up tips that you can add toyour own set-up.

Before I met Jon Eade, who is ourtraining and educational director, I’dnever really thought about boxing forfitness courses, but look at us now. Weonly launched the Academy last yearand it’s already one of the best cours-es in the country.

Can you tell us more about the work theHatton Academy does? The Academy is basically a trainingscheme that helps fitness instructorsto learn boxing skills which can thenbe used as part of classes.

There’s other boxing for fitness pro-grammes running, but I like to thinkours is the best because it includesmany elements that others don’t. Iboxed for over 20 years so I picked upa few things along the way and we’veincluded some unique parts in thecourses.

We also run workshops where peo-ple can come along and do bits ofpadwork and bag work with me. Theyusually book up within hours of usannouncing them and it’s great to beable to get hands on with people who

are learning new ways of keeping fit.

What sort of impact has working in the fit-ness industry had on your life? It’s had a massive impact, to be hon-

est with you. I had to train like a demon for my

world title fights and that includedlearning about the best equipment, the best nutrients and the best sup-plements.

I think most people know my down-fall was not taking things as seriouslyas I should have outside of trainingcamp. I’d let myself go a bit too muchand that probably cut four or fiveyears off my career.

Making the mistakes is a blessing insome ways, though, because I knowwhat to advise the lads I train against.

Any other plans for the coming months youcan tell us about? My promotional business is tickingalong nicely.

We’ve got three Aussies that aremaking names for themselves andI’ve got two boxers, ZhanatZhakiyanov and Sergey Rabchenko, that have won European titles and arevery close to world title fights.

The lads I train myself are all com-ing along nicely as well so I thinkthere’s big things to come in the next12 months. The Academy is going wellalso and we’ll be looking to extend itfurther in the next few months withmore workshops and courses.

RUNNING Unlimited has unveiledits new, improved Zone dome, designed to provide users with theworld’s best indoor running experi-ence – and help operators offersomething different in a competitivemarketplace.

Unveiled at this year’s ukactiveFlame Conference, the Zone domes, which include surround vision tech-nology, immerse the user in HDfilms, taking them through iconiccities and inspirational landscapesacross the world, enabling users torun somewhere new every time theyvisit the gym.

CEO Kevin Hewitt said: “The needwe saw was simple. A step-change in

experience is needed by the higherend of the health club sector todefend themselves against theassault by incredibly well-funded,budget gym operators that are rap-idly eroding membership margins.

“We set out to create the world’sbest indoor running experience. We’re calling it ‘business class run-ning’ as the all-new Zone domesdeliver the giant experience leap for-wards gym members are crying outfor.”

After releasing a version in spring2013, the last 12 months have beenall about development for theRunning Unlimited team.

Kevin added: “Ultimately, our deci-

sion to continue the pursuit of ourZone dome vision boiled down tothe answers from two simple ques-tions: would people use Zonedomes repeatedly and would theyrecommend their Zone dome expe-rience?”

“The results came out strongly infavour, with 87 percent of peoplesaying they’d absolutely use theZone domes again (and on nearlyevery gym visit), and 91 per cent rec-ommending their Zone dome expe-rience to others.

“Zone dome users love the experi-ence and we know our all-new Zonedome will wow users and gym oper-ators alike.”

An exciting new class is working up a storm at Virgin Active clubs where members – and instructors – are enjoyinggetting to grips with ViPR 3D sessions. Christina Eccles tried out a class – and discovered why operators couldbenefit from adding it to their timetables.

Classes provide effectiveworkout for all abilitiesViPR uses a concept called LoadedMovement Training, which effectivelychallenges and conditions every sys-tem in the body, making it an effec-tive workout for all ages and abilities.

A 30-minute format also makes it atime efficient class, while differentsized weights allow members tochoose their entry point and howquickly they progress.

All this combined with the fact par-ticipants don’t have to get to gripswith complicated choreography, makes it easy to see why ViPR 3Dclasses are becoming a popularchoice with people who want results, but don’t have lots of spare time tospend in the gym.

Instructor Chris Stanton said:“There is a huge market for a 30-minute class. It’s all about variety andgetting people to try new things.

“We as fitness professionals have toeducate people. When membersunderstand what they are gettingfrom it, they want to do the class.

“It’s very easy to teach when youbelieve in what you are doing. I enjoyinspiring people in fitness.”

Apart from the ViPR, no specialistequipment is required to deliver aclass, with instructors simply needing

adequate studio space, music and amicrophone.

And according to account and train-ing manager Holly McNamara, thereare many benefits to clubs whichdecide to add ViPR Group Fitness ses-sions on to their timetables.

She added: “ViPR caters for all levelsdue to the differences in weight from4kg to 8kg.

“It is recommended as a 30 minuteclass allowing clubs to place ViPRGroup Fitness 3D and Athletic classes

back to back in a one-hour time slot. “This makes it more accessible to

club members in their time poor livesand more cost effective for clubs toservice the members.

“It can also be used as a 45-minuteclass with additional breaks andactive recoveries.”

She added that although at first theclasses may be so different to whatmembers are used to doing they mayfeel out of sync, after a few sessionsthey will pick things up and start to

feel confident enough to progress fur-ther.

“ViPR is a new concept and a differ-ent way of moving. Initially memberswill identify that it feels different, andmay even feel uncoordinated.

“However, within two or three class-es members will feel the benefits ofworking with ViPR. As they gain famil-iarity, strength and coordination theycan move onto a larger weight whichwill take them to a whole new experi-ence.”

WHEN a 30-minute class flies by inwhat seems like next to no time, youknow you are on to a winning for-mula...

And that’s exactly what happenedwhen I tried out Virgin Active’s latestgroup exercise offering, ViPR 3Dfrom FitPro.

The session was energetic, upbeatand challenging, but without beingovercomplicated; meaning even assomeone with little coordination, onthe whole I didn’t struggle to follow

the moves. Throughout the class, theinstructor was motivating, the musicuplifting and routines really wellchoreographed, with shifts in inten-sity to ensure participants couldpush that bit harder if they felt theywanted to – without overexertingthemselves.

I also found it useful that weworked in blocks of movements, which meant we could focus on get-ting the technique right, rather thanworrying about losing timing by

continuously having to change theposition of the ViPR. This alsoensured the class flowed well as weworked our way through the exercis-es. The session was small enoughthat each person could benefit fromindividual attention from ourinstructor should they need it and asthe ViPR is available in differentweight increments, it means peopleof all abilities are able to join in thesame class.

With plenty of choreography

options available to instructors anda comprehensive education pro-gramme in place, which will stoproutines from ever becoming pre-dictable, it’s easy to see why mem-bers are loving taking part – andcoming back for more.

This is also a class with plenty ofroom for progression for those whostick with it, and as it takes just half-an-hour to achieve a great wholebody workout, it’s the perfectlunchtime exercise option.

Christina found the ViPR 3D session energetic, upbeat and challenging, but without being overcomplicated.

Death, taxes andreduced mobilityBy Mark Laws, Jordan Fitness

WHETHER we evolved over millionsof years from monkeys or fish, orwhether we can all trace our familytree back to Adam and Eve…undoubtedly we have survived for along time and each one of us is bornwith the incredible gift of an unlimit-ed potential.

Few things are certain about ourlives, but for at least 300 years ‘deathand taxes’ have been widely cited asbeing ‘certainties’. Is it time to consid-er ‘reduced mobility’ as a third cer-tainty?

Look around at the people you workwith, the people you see in the gym, people walking around the aisles ofyour local supermarket. Look at theirposture, their gait, their physical dys-functions. We all have them.

The sad fact is that only a tinyminority of us actually use our bodiesfor physical activity anymore. Of thesmall amount of us who are regularlyactive, an even smaller minority ofthose are performing efficient move-ments with safe techniques. Thismeans that the vast majority of ourpopulation are becoming weaker, lessmobile, more injury prone, or a com-bination of all three.

Mobility specialist, Kelly Starrett, says that “all human beings should beable to perform basic maintenance onthemselves” and he has a point.Imagine a car lover who had a prized1967 Porsche 911 (which is fastapproaching its 50th birthday). Doyou imagine for a second that hewould put the wrong fuel in it or leaveit to gather moss and rot away undera tarpaulin in his backyard? Not achance. He would polish it with thefinest cloth that money can buy andwould take great pleasure in taking itfor a careful spin at weekends - just tohear the purr of a timeless, healthyengine that has been well maintained, and at 47 years old performs betterthan ever.

So do we become less mobilebecause we get old? Or do we justlook/act/feel older because of our

reduced mobility? Obviously we can-not turn back time, our bodies willalways diminish slightly as we getolder, but good mobility can be pro-longed and really enhance the qualityof our lives…making us feel youngeras we get older.

All it takes is some care and atten-tion of our most cherished posses-sion. You all know the benefits ofexercise, as do the fitness profession-als who work at your facilities, butnever underestimate the value ofimproving your clients/membersrange of motion, mobility and flexibil-ity with a well-designed ‘functional’training programme (email [email protected] to arrange a‘Functional Training Workshop’ atyour facility).

A good accountant will reduce yourtax bill, good genes and a good dietmight even be able to postpone death(for a while), and by using our bodiesto their full potential we can at leastenhance our mobility and quality oflife, rather than joining the masses ofour peers who look and feel olderthan they should…which should giveus all something to smile about andget us back down to having only twocertainties to worry about.

CHANGING ROOMS AND WETSIDE34 www.nationalfitnessawards.co.uk

The smart choice for yourchanging room lockersIS locker key management a problemat your gym, health club or spa?

Do changing room locker keys getlost, stolen or broken on a regularbasis? A simple upgrade will do thetrick. Make locker key management athing of the past by replacing key camlocks with smart-looking digital locksfrom KitLock.

The compact KL1000 digital lock isdesigned specifically for securingchanging room lockers without theuse of keys, coins or tokens. Its slimdesign means it can be fitted in right-hand or left-hand, horizontal or verti-cal orientations.

Members simply enter a four-digit

code on the keypad, ‘lock and go’. If amember forgets their code, the lockercan be opened using a techniciancode. This allows the lock to beopened without affecting the codeselected by the user.

Employees can use the techniciancode to open all of the changing roomlockers at the end of the day to checkfor left contents and leave them easilyaccessible for cleaning. This processprevents lockers from having to beput ‘out of action’ while more keys arecut, saving both time and money.

A SCOTTISH leisure trust hashelped its swimming instructors cutdown on paperwork – and improveretention – by investing in an inno-vative course management tool forits swim programmes.

Borders Sports and Leisure Trustoperates 13 sites across the ScottishBorders region, including state-of-the-art sports facilities, leisure cen-tres and swimming pools.

The trust first implementedGladstone’s Learn2 course manage-ment tool at Galashiels SwimmingPool last October, and following asuccessful trial period there, hasnow rolled it out to its other fivepools.

Marketing manager EmilyMcGowan said: “One advantage ofthe software is that it has enabledus to go paperless at the poolside,as our teachers can now take regis-ters and make notes via theirportable devices. Thanks to the sys-tem’s automated paymentreminders, we have also seen a sig-nificant reduction in the number ofcustomers not paying.

“We expect that by far the greatestbenefit of Learn2, however, will beits impact on retention. One of themost common complaints fromparents under the old system wasthat they did not know how theirchild was getting on in lessons. Thanks to Home Portal, they can

now easily track their child’sprogress online rather than havingto find time to speak with theteacher.

“Although we purchased the soft-ware for swimming, it quicklybecame apparent that it wouldwork just as effectively for anysports programme with progressioncriteria, and earlier this year welaunched it for football at our 3GArena site.

“The next step will be to incorpo-rate Learn2 into our cycling pro-grammes, although now we knowhow versatile the software is, we willalso be reviewing our other pro-grammes to see if there is a fit.”

NEW TO THE INDUSTRY BUT ALREADY MAKING AN IMPACT?38 www.nationalfitnessawards.co.uk

Commercial thinking was the theme of the latest LFX conference where industry professionals gathered atStockport Sports Village for a day of speaker presentations, the chance to share ideas and take advantage ofnetworking opportunities. Workout’s Christina Eccles and Olivia Taylor rounded up some of the day’s highlights.

THE idea behind LFX is to offer abusiness network for professionalsworking in the active leisure industry, with each event offering two streams;one for fitness professionals and theother for managers.

While the fitness delegates were putthrough their paces with an outdoorViPR training session, the manage-ment conference kicked off with a talkfrom top GB swimming coach SeanKelly, who spoke about the impor-tance of making marginal gains, whether in sport or business.

Sean who is currently working withBritish swimmer Lauren Quigley, revealed how he is coaching her tocompete with the best in the world byworking on everything from tech-nique in the pool to her diet, confi-dence and self belief.

Using the example of a tape meas-ure to illustrate the distance betweenLauren’s best time and the currentworld record, he showed that bybreaking down an overall race intosmaller sections and working on mak-ing marginal gains in each of theareas – each saving a small fraction oftime – what seems like a huge task tostart with, can be broken down intomuch more manageable chunks. Andgreat results can be achieved.

Outside of the sporting arena, Seanalso showed how these lessonslearned from elite coaching can beapplied to the leisure industry.

He encouraged operators to think ofsome of the different strands whichmake up their business – anythingfrom the cleanliness of the gym, tosocial media use, sales and customerservice – where they can make theirown marginal gains – improvementsin each area which will help toimprove the overall club perform-ance.

He added: “It’s a game of inches.

[For Lauren] the goal is about time.“Whatever you want to do, do it to

the best of your ability – and give iteverything you can.”

Other speakers on the day includedLife Leisure’s managing directorMalcolm McPhail, who revealed thestrategy behind some of the awardwinning operator’s successes.

He also spoke about how the com-pany managed to fend off the arrivalof budget clubs in the area by exam-ining their own offering – and improv-ing the experience offered to mem-bers.

This strategy included offering newmembership options – including a£10.99 a month introductory offer –plus a focus on winning back mem-bers who had left to to try out the lowcost facilities and making sure stafffelt valued and happy within theorganisation.

Malcolm added: “The budget gymshelped us to wake up.

“It was a major wake up call for usand led to us asking, is what we aredoing at this price as good as whatthey can do?

“How did we respond? With a newculture and a new strategy specificallytargeting the budget gyms, which weexecuted impeccably.

“You have to let them go to experi-ence the offering. They will comeback – and you should welcome themback.”

ENTER YOUR CLUB FOR A TOP INDUSTRY AWARD... 41www.nationalfitnessawards.co.uk

Commissioning retentionBy Dr Paul Bedford

RETAINING members can make orbreak a business – if you focus solelyon selling new memberships youcould be losing up to half of your pos-sible income.

Whilst the number one question Iget asked is ‘should we have a con-tract or not’, it is important to under-stand there is no one reason why peo-ple quit. It really is a cumulative effectstemming from several factors thatclubs are quite capable of solving.

First members become bored andfeel they are not achieving their goals.Lack of goal achievement results in reconsideration of the value of mem-bership. So have your staff check inwith members regularly to see wherethey are in relationship to their goals.Don’t take the member away from theexercise environment, do it wherethey are exercising – no sit down con-sultations.

If you don’t address the lack ofresults you will end up with reducedfrequency of visits and a shift inmindset. When members visit less fre-quently they begin to look for reasonsto quit. If they can find fault in whatyou do they have an excuse to blameyou and can disassociate from theproblem of not actually turning up.Combine this with a sense of lowquality service and you have a lethalcocktail of low visit frequency, lack ofresults and low service that leads toquitting.

Frightening FactsResearch shows that on average onlyone in 10 people are spoken to whenthey visit a gym, and this includes"hello" and "goodbye". The criticalquestion therefore is whether con-sumers feel they receive a service ormerely gain access to facilities?Interaction is key. Members want asociable gym, but this does not mean

they want to socialise there. Theywant to be in a friendly and sociableenvironment.

Provide all new members with aconsultation session to discuss andestablish their personal goals, whichshould result in a personal pro-gramme and follow up consultation.By offering these basic services, members receive professional expert-ise for their money and feel they areimportant and valuable to your busi-ness. You don’t have to give a full 60minutes for all new members, justthose who have never joined a gymbefore or those that have but havenever really got going.

However, make sure you don’t letexperienced exercisers begin withoutmeeting one of your gym team or yourun the risk this is interpreted by themember as your staff are not worthspeaking to, which creates a situationwhere the club undermines the valueof its own staff.

We have seen in the best performingclubs that service is proven toincrease retention. You may need torevisit your business model and con-sider rewarding those who play a keyrole in retaining members. It isacceptable to reward or pay commis-

sion to the sales team who bring innew business, unless maybe you areselling one month agreements.

I firmly believe that one member ofstaff, encouraging, guiding and reas-suring members should be the baselevel of service and member interac-tion on the gym floor. Additionalcosts for this will be covered by yourretained members. However, if thisproves difficult, arrange for one per-son to be available at the busiesttimes so they impact as many peopleas possible.

By measuring length of membershipyou can establish an average (medi-an) length of stay. If you assign mem-bers that have inductions to specificmembers of fitness staff, you can cre-ate a caseload of members for eachteam member.

Let’s say your current average lengthof stay is six months, then for eachadditional month the member staysyou pay the member of staff onepound. If the member stays anothermonth you pay another pound.

Once the staff case load has reached300-400 members it could be a bonusof £300-400 per month just for keep-ing members using the club. If youare charging £35 per month, a £1 out-lay to staff for a £34 profit is not a badreturn.

Obviously you need to know yournumbers, but commissioning reten-tion could be the break though clubsneed to have major impact on reten-tion and income. It would alsoencourage staff to provide a highquality service and improved experi-ence for the member. Dr Paul Bedford is the fitnessindustry’s leading authority on reten-tion, attrition and customer experi-ence management and the author ofThe National Retention Report.

PROVIDING members with some-where secure to store their belongingswhile they workout is a priority formost health and fitness operators.

Changing room lockers secured withkeys is one option, but there is alwaysa risk that the keys will get lost orstolen. KitLock is a range of lockerlocks designed specifically for secur-ing lockers without using keys or fobs.

To access a locker, members simplyenter their own four-digit code on thekeypad, then ‘lock and go’. The lockremains secure until the memberreturns and enters their code toreopen the locker. If a member forgetstheir code, employees can open thelocker using a ‘technician code’. Thisprocess is far easier as the lockerdoesn’t have to be placed ‘out ofaction’ while you wait for new keys tobe cut.

There are three electronic lockerlocks to choose from in the KitLockrange: the compact KL1000, the tough

KL1200 and the new versatile KL1500. Each product comes with an IP rat-
