The Woodstock Festival of 1969 By Jennifer Rosenberg, About.com Guide (adapted)

Historical Importance of the Woodstock Festival of 1969: The Woodstock Festival was a three-day concert that involved lots of sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll - plus a lot of mud. The Woodstock Music Festival of 1969 has become an icon of the 1960s hippie counterculture. The Organizers of Woodstock The organizers of the Woodstock Festival were four young men: John Roberts, Joel Rosenman, Artie Kornfeld, and Mike Lang. [...] The Plan for the Woodstock Festival The four young men then got to work on organizing a large music festival. They found a location for the event up in an industrial park in nearby Wallkill, New York. They printed tickets ($7 for one day, $13 for two days, and $18 for three days), which could be purchased in select stores or via mail order. The men also worked on organizing food, signing musicians, and hiring security. Things Go Very Wrong The first of many things to go wrong with the Woodstock Festival was the location. [...] After much wrangling, the town of Wallkill passed a law that effectively banned the concert from their vicinity. Everyone involved with the Woodstock Festival panicked. Only a month-and-a half before the Woodstock Festival was to begin, a new location had to be found. Luckily, in mid-July, Max Yasgur offered up his 600-acre farm in Bethel, New York to be the location for the Woodstock Festival. As the date got closer, more problems sprung up. It soon appeared that their 50,000 people estimate was way too low and the new estimate jumped to upwards of 200,000 people. The young men then tried to bring in more toilets, more water, and more food. [...] Hundreds of Thousands Arrive at the Woodstock Festival On Wednesday, August 13 (two days before the Festival was to begin), there were already approximately 50,000 people camping near the stage. [...] Since there was no way to get the 50,000 people to leave the area in order to pay for tickets, the organizers were forced to make the event a free concert. This declaration of a free concert had two consequences. The first was that the organizers were going to lose massive amounts of money and the second was that as news spread that it was now a free concert, an estimated one million people headed to Bethel, New York. Police had to turn away thousands of cars. After the Woodstock Festival The organizers of Woodstock were dazed at the end of the Festival. They didn't have time to focus on the fact that they had created the most popular music event in history, leaving apart the incredible debt of over $ 1million.

Music Festivals in England (1960s-1970s)

The 1969 Isle of Wight Festival was held on 29–31 August 1969 at the English town of Wootton, on the Isle of Wight. The festival attracted an audience of approximately 150,000 to see acts including Bob Dylan, The Band, The Who, Free, Joe Cocker, the Bonzo Dog Band and The Moody Blues. It was the second of three music festivals held on the island between 1968 and 1970. Organised by

Ronnie and Ray Foulk's Fiery Creations, it became a legendary event, largely owing to the participation of Dylan, who had spent the previous three years in semi-retirement. The event was well managed, in comparison to the recent Woodstock Festival, and trouble-free. The 1969 festival was considerably larger and more popular than the previous year's. Dylan had been little heard of since his allegedly near-fatal motorcycle accident in July 1966. Shunning the Woodstock Festival, held near his home in upstate New York, Dylan was initially reluctant to perform his comeback show on the little-known Isle of Wight. 1970s Pilton Festival 1970 Glastonbury was heavily influenced by hippie ethics and the free festival movement in the early 1970s, beginning with the Isle of Wight Festival, which featured performances by The Who, amongst many other artists. Organiser Michael Eavis decided to host the first festival, then called Pilton Festival, after seeing an open-air concert headlined by Led Zeppelin at the 1970 Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Music at the nearby Bath and West Showground in 1970. The festival retains vestiges of this tradition such as the Green Fields area, encompassing the Green Futures and Healing Field. The first festival at Worthy Farm was the Pilton Pop, Blues & Folk Festival, mounted by Michael Eavis on Saturday 19 September 1970, and attended by 1,500 people. Glastonbury Free Festival 1971 The "Glastonbury Fair" of 1971 was instigated by Andrew Kerr after being found and introduced to Michael Eavis by David. The 1971 festival featured the first incarnation of the "Pyramid Stage". Conceived by Bill Harkin the stage was a one- tenth replica of the Great Pyramid of Giza built from scaffolding and metal sheeting and positioned over a blind spring which was found by dowsing.

Performers included David Bowie, Mighty Baby, Traffic, Fairport Convention, Gong, Hawkwind, Skin Alley, The Worthy Farm Windfuckers and Melanie. It was paid for by its supporters and advocates of its ideal, and embraced a mediaeval tradition of music, dance, poetry, theatre, lights, and spontaneous entertainment. The 1971 festival was filmed by Nicolas Roeg and David Puttnam and was released as a film called simply Glastonbury Fayre.

Document C- Famous 1960’s singers A/The Rolling Stones The Rolling Stones were a British band, begun in the early 1960s, influenced by American rhythm and blues artists such as Little Richard. However, the Rolling Stones eventually created their own sound by experimenting with instruments and writing rhythm and blues mixed with rock and roll. When the Beatles hit international stardom in 1963, the Rolling Stones were right on their heels. The longest performing rock band of all time, the Rolling Stones have greatly influenced rock and roll throughout the decades. Beginning as part of the British Rock Invasion of the 1960s, the Rolling Stones quickly became the “bad-boy” band with an image of sex, drugs, and wild behavior. Often billed as the world's greatest rock and roll band they are certainly the most prolific and long lasting group of their generation. B/Jimi Hendrix Born on November 27, 1942, in Seattle, Washington, Jimi Hendrix learnt to play the guitar as a teenager, and grew up to become a rock guitar legend who excited audiences in the 1960s with his innovative electric guitar playing. One of his most memorable performances was at Woodstock in 1969, where he performed "The Star Spangled Banner." Hendrix died in 1970 from drug-related complications, leaving his mark on the world of rock music and remaining popular to this day. He pioneered certain guitar techniques like the use of a Wah-wah pedal and using amplifier feedback as a type of musical accompaniment. Known for his outrageous brightly colored clothes, scarves and hats, he also acted outrageous on stage at one point lighting his guitar on fire. C/Janis Joplin As a teenager in the late 1950s, she had read about Jack Kerouac and the Beatniks, began to dress in her own style, and started listening to blues music. Janis Joplin was a shooting star in the rock ‘n roll firmament of the 1960s. She died of a heroin overdose at age 27. Joplin sang her own brand of the blues in an incendiary style. Yet in her short time — between 1966 and 1970 —she traveled from the conservative community of Port Arthur, Texas to the expansive and unpredictable world t t that was the drug/hippie/music scene of 1960s San Francisco. She was a symbol for rebellion against the establishment which endeared her to the whole hippie movement. She is still considered as one of Hollywood's most remarkable legends. Bob Dylan He was probably the most influential song writer of the decade. Bob Dyland is considered to be the greatest influence on popular culture of all time. Dylan’s “The Times They are A-Changin” was another song about the effects on society by the changes going on in the country. Most young Americans considered it a song about the generation gap between liberals and conservatives He is credited with being the person who first exposed the Beatles to marijuana. Bob Dylan is considered to be the greatest influence on popular culture of all time.

Dylan’s “The Times They are A-Changin” was another song about the effects on society by the changes going on in the country. Most young Americans considered it a song about the generation gap between liberals and conservatives.

His music was closely associated with the civil rights and antiwar movements of the sixties. His music was heavily influenced by early exposure to folk, blues, and country music.
