Institute of Infrastructure, Technology, Research and

Management (IITRAM), Ahmedabad, an autonomous university

established by government of Gujarat is instrumental in

bringing about a profound change in science and engineering

education. It provides science and engineering education to

create centres of excellence, to organize advanced studies and

to promote research and development. It foster cultural and

ethical values with a view to enhance professional morality,

research integrity, globally acceptable business ethics and

morals for professionals.

IITRAM Ahmedabad offers Bachelor and Master of Technology

programs in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and

Electrical Engineering. The institute also offers Ph.D. studies in

various fields in sciences, engineering and humanities.

Comprehensive understanding of materials properties is vital for

innovative design for new and improved applications. Macroscopic

properties crucially depend on composition and structure (crystal

and micro-structure) of materials. This six days' workshop will

introduce fundamental framework for diffraction, spectroscopy

and imaging methods for structural and compositional

characterization of materials. This workshop will be fruitful to those

who are planning to use or using essential materials

characterization tools such as x-ray diffraction for structural

analysis, IR and Raman spectroscopy for vibrational analysis, x-ray

photoelectron and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy for

compositional analysis, electron microscopies for microstructural

analysis. The workshop will be helpful for understanding the

relation between structure and materials' properties essential for

materials scientists and engineers and expand knowledge base in

the field of Materials Characterization. For new researchers this

workshop can be a great opportunity to learn, explore and make

life long collaborations.

About the Institute:

About the Workshop:

The department of Physics at IITRAM Ahmedabad was

established in 2013 with an ambition to pursue high-level

teaching methodologies and quality research in modern areas

of experimental and theoretical physics, as well as

interdisciplinary areas of science & technology. Presently, the

Physics department supports undergraduate B.Tech. Program

and offers Ph.D. programme in Physics. The research programs

aim to train the young scientists to acquire knowledge and

make them as global leaders in science & technology to

communicate and engage with the broader society. The

doctoral candidates are mentored in diverse areas of physical

sciences, like molecular spectroscopy of soft-material and their

applications, Functionalized Nano-structures and their

application as sensor, Ionic liquids in energy applications,

Condense Matter Physics, Superconductivity, and Magnetism etc.

About the Physics Department:

l Structure and diffraction: theoretical framework

l X-ray diffraction: data collection and analysis (Rietveld

Refinement)

l Spectroscopy: IR, Raman, Fluorescence, XPS etc.

l Raman and IR spectral mapping

l Scanning and transmission electron microscopies (SEM and

TEM): basic theory, image formation and compositional

analysis

l Electron diffraction and defect analysis by TEM and SEM

l Scanning probe microscopy (AFM, STM, PFM etc)

Topics:

Highlights:

l Hands on Rietveld analysis of powder x-ray diffractions

patterns using Full-Prof software.

l Estimation of lattice parameters, particle size, space group etc.

l Hands on data collection and analysis on FTIR and UV-Visible

absorption spectroscopy for some selected samples.
