EDUCATION SYSTEM
• Preschool is NOT compulsory – 874 State preschools operate 3 hrs per day, 5 days per week, 38 weeks per
year
– 364 Community preschools operate 2 hrs per day, 5 days per week, 24-36 weeks per year
• Primary education lasts for 6 years and is COMPULSORY – Pupil/teacher ratio is 49:1
– Repetition rate was 8.9%
– Overall dropout rate was 8.3%

• New National Curriculum (Dec 2004) – 5 periods of teaching per day (each period is 40mins)
– 5 days per week
– 2-5 additional 40 mins periods per week of LLSP
• Local Life Skills Programme (LLSP) – Establish with the new national curriculum in 2004
– Topics like health Education, safety, nutrition, relaxation, illness protection, hygiene food, traffic safety, drowning awareness, landmine awareness, HIV & AIDS awareness, drug awareness, bird flu, environmental protection

• In 2004/05 – Approx 4,395 preschool teachers
• 3,027 in state preschools
• 920 in community preschools
• 448 in private preschools

TEACHERS TRAINNING @ CAMBODIA
• Community teachers have in-service training for 16 days provided by Department of Early Childhood Education in the provinces
• Preschool and lower secondary education teachers, Regional teacher training centres offer 2yrs programmes to upper secondary education graduates
• To qualify for upper secondary school teacher, 1yr postgraduate programme at the National Institute of Education for bachelors degree holders.
TEACHERS CONCERN @ CAMBODIA
• Highly academic nature of the teacher-training curriculum
• A large proportion of time is spent on academic upgrading as opposed to teaching methodology and in-school teaching practice
• Insufficient incentives for posting qualified teachers to work in remote areas and school in difficult circumstances

OBJECTIVE OF CREATIVE TEACHING MANUAL
• Develop a full set of CREATIVE Teaching Manual covering the three age groups (pre-school / grade 1 /grade 2) by the Service trip* – Using simple material
– Use of pictures
– Easy to follow
* For the purpose of Pre-trip, focus on PreSchool level

TASK I (approx 45mins)
1. From your homework, each group to select one interactive way of teaching your education element – All target Pre-School level , 3-5 years old
– Using the template, prepare a simple teaching instruction with pictures
– Prepare one set of material for demonstration
– Prepare to give a 5-10 minutes presentation
2. Each group to come up with 5 questions they want to know about local education system / teaching methods / Challenges

TASK II
1. Prepare for the consultation with the local community, teachers and children about your DESIGN and your STORY – Using your model/ sketch up / four block comic
2. A list of questions for your Pre-tripees to find out – Material available? Paint colours?
– What size? Cost?
3. A list of questions to discuss with Engineer tomorrow – Buildable? Cost?
