Project Overview - Motivation

Effective engineering education should focus on student mastery of content through high-level thinking skills (such as application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation) resulting in greater acquisition of content and development of thinking skills.

Project Overview – The Tool

Create, test, and evaluate a set of field problems that are: 1) based on real world situations, 2) based on data collected and analyzed using state-of-

the-art technologies, 3) developed using sound educational and product

development practices, 4) targeted to and tested by different levels of

undergraduate civil engineering students, 5) focused on major disciplines within civil engineering

namely transportation engineering and transportation infrastructure as well as advanced surveying and geodesy, and

6) the prototype for a full scale educational materials development project for general civil engineering education.

Prepare a set of guidance documents that form the basis for the development of the field problems and related course materials. These guidance documents include:1) a set of learning objectives that describe the skills

and competencies that students will be expected to have upon completion of each of the field problems,

2) a set of guidelines that describe the development architecture and the requirements for all field problems materials, and

3) a technical report that addresses the kinds of materials that will be used in the field problems.

Develop set of field problemsAdvanced surveying (GIS/GPS) problems, transportation engineering (traffic/transportation engineering) problems, and geotechnical & infrastructures (tunneling, soil-structure interaction, soil dynamics) problems Based on real world situations. Utilize a learning process defined by a set of educational objectives. Include a well-defined set of computations and problems and a concluding interpretative and assessment focus. Complex (requiring integration of knowledge) and allow for multiple solutions and multiple solution paths. Allow for hands-on experiences with models and equipment, including Global Positioning Systems (GPS) data collection devices, Geographical Information System (GIS) environment, commonly used software tools and other equipment and tools.
