About University:
Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University is a Central University established on 10th January, 1996 by the act of Parliament 1994, with a objects of promoting advance knowledge by in structural and re-search facilities in key and frontier areas of Science & Technolo-gy and several others disciplines. BBAU is a residential Universi-ty having spread over 250 acres of land at Raebareli Road, dis-tance about 11 Kms from the Charbagh Railway station and 5kms approx. from the Chaudhary Char an Singh International Airport, Lucknow. One of the chief objective of the University is to cater to, and promote the educational needs of the marginal-ized people, particularly the SC/ST communities and Women.
The University is progressing continuously towards becoming an center of Excellence, both in academics as well as in infra-structural and is already endowed with various facilities viz innovation Club, University Science Instrumentation Centre, State of Art Library, National Knowledge Network, Remedial Coaching Centre for SC/ST students, Information & Guidance bureau, health Centre etc. The University has good facility and laboratories in different departments of the University to em-phasized the research for human welfare and mankind.
About the Workshop
The theme of the workshop is “Basics of Flow Cytometry and its
Applications in Biomedical Sciences”. Today, flow cytometry
has become an important tool to unravel the mysteries in
the cells. The applications of flow cytometry have spread
through all branches of biological sciences especially in bio-
technology involved in exploration of Stem cells, genomics
and proteomics. Flow cytometry has been used to measure
the properties of both mammalian and plant cells as well
yeast and bacteria. This technique can also be used to study
for various purpose like for isolated nuclei , chromosome
and mitochondria. Flow cytometer is an equipment which
helps to measure certain physical and chemical characteristics of
the cells or particle as they travel one by one through a sensing
point. The key feature of Flow Cytometric analysis is that sepa-
rate measurements are made on each individual cell particle
with in the suspension rather than an average value of the whole
population. In this process, the cells that have been fluoro-
chrome labeled antibody in suspension are introduced into a
liquid jet and passed individually through the laser beam.
As each cells passes through, it emits a fluorescence and scattered
light, these signals are collected and converted by the flow cytofluo-
rometer to give quantitative information on the intensity of fluores-
cence and the light scattering properties of each cell. The ability of
flow cytometer to measure multiple cellular parameters, based on
light scattered and fluorescence to purify physically sub population
of cells, has lead to growing utilization of this technique in biology
and medicine. In cells, a variety of properties can be measured viz
the DNA content of the nucleus, expression of a surface or intra-
cellular antigen, activity of an intracellular enzyme, functional
studies of chromosomes for creating gene libraries. Apart from
above, this technique can be used for direct cloning, single or
rare transfected or hybridoma cells into each tissue culture plate
can also be studied.
This workshop will cover the following broad topics:
1. Basics of Flow Cytometry & its Biomedical Applications
2. Inside the Black Box— (KYC) Know your Cytometer
3. Quality control in Flow Cytometry
4. DNA and cell cycle analysis
5. Apoptosis, Autophagy and Proliferation
6. Multicolour Immunophenotyping
7. Data Analysis and Presentation
This workshop on application of cytometry in biomedical sciences will immensely help the BBAU fraternity and the delegates by providing a hands on training for 3 days by the eminent faculty from esteemed Institutes.
