Workshop on Offshore Wind Development in India Potential & Prospects New Delhi, April 25th, 2013 Norbert Giese, REpower Systems SE

Installed capacity, On- and Offshore Wind Worldwide

Installed until 31.12.2012 world wide

Onshore Wind: 266 GW (98%)

Offshore Wind: 5 GW (2%)

Source: Wind Power Monthly page 56 4/2013

Not yet really significant, big potential

Where Offshore Wind began in 1991 : 11 x 450 kW in Vindeby, NW Lolland, Denmark (Picture: Norbert Giese)

The Offshore Market in Europe

Total Installations 1991 - 2012

- 1.662 # offshore WTGs installed worldwide - thereof in 2012: 369 #

- 4.995 MW total installed offshore worldwide - thereof in 2012: 1.166 MW

- 55 projects - thereof in 2012: 9 projects - 10 countries - Leading Markets so far: UK, DEN, BEL, GER, NED, SWE

- Total outside Europe: 244 MW in China

The Offshore Wind Industry Worldwide : History last 20 years and Near Future Next 4 years

Global Offshore Wind Industry in an important (or critical?) phase

1991 – 2011 in total 3.8 GW grid connected - mainly in Denmark and UK - mainly near shore, shallow water, 2 MW - 3 MW turbines

2012 – 2015 roughly 12 GW under credible development or order - this is a 15 times faster pace than in the first 20 years - thereof :

1/3 will be in the UK and 1/3 will be in Germany 1/3 will be in the rest of world and 2/3 have secured financing already in place 1/3 so far have not secured financing yet

Things get in motion…

Offshore? What kind of offshore?

1. Near to shore, < 20 km, mainly 5 - 15 km from the nearest harbour

2. Shallow water, < 20 m, mainly 5 - 15 m water depth

3. Mainly onshore turbines used with 2 - 3 MW

4. Strong wind regimes

Offshore I

more than 20 km, 1. Far from shore,

more than 20 km, up to 150 km from the nearest harbour

2. Deep water, up to 60 m water depth

3. Real offshore turbines

needed 4. Strong or very strong

wind regimes

Offshore II

1. Far from shore 2. Very deep water 3. For the time being

floating foundations needed

4. Strong or very strong wind regimes

Offshore III

Today’s offshore business…

Typical Challenges: „Waiting for the Cable…“

„AC/DC“ : An Australian Hard Rock Band?

Or is it something more?

AC : Alternating Current + Good for shorter distances and smaller capacities + Well proven + Delivery times of 18-24 Months + Relatively inexpensive - Higher grid losses, impossible for larger distances DC: Direct Current + Solution for larger distances and high power output + Minimal losses, unavoidable for larger distances - New technology, especially offshore - Limited suppliers (Siemens, ABB and only soon Alstom) - Long delivery times of currently > 60 months

Typical Challenges: Serious CAPEX Needs !
