Background

INTRODUCE the concept of resilience as the capacity to recover quickly from shocks and stresses based on a robust approach to systems planning, implementation and continual assessment taking into account social and economic factors, not only environmental ones.

Goals

Objectives •  SHARE examples of resilient community planning and resources, which is

•  A human-centered approach to adaptation that may draw on technological assets (but not vice versa).  •  Beyond the conventional disaster response by putting resilience planning strategies and their implementation

in a broader setting.

•  PROVIDE a learning example such as a case study on a specific resilience challenge in particular geographical areas (e.g., USA, China, Indonesia).

•  BUILD network with urban stakeholders and with other participating parties of Prep.Comm-3.

•  ESTABLISH partnerships with local governments, professional associations and academic/research institutions on the topic, particularly in the Asia Pacific region. .

Participants

There are two groups of participants A.   100 senior officials of collaborating institutions:

•  PII key personnel, RC-CEHUD, RIHHS, UNTAG faculty members; •  Professional Associations related to all urban stakeholders; •  Research institutions and universities; •  Local government leaders and city/district officials; •  Practitioners: developers, architects, planners, engineers, PMI, PMK, BNPB, etc.

B.   50-100 students and observers.

It is a one-day workshop provided for: §  Lecture and presentation led by the workshop instructors & moderator bilingually (English/ Indonesia) §  Roundtable setting: @7-9 participants per table of mixed institutions, are expected to be active during the workshop. §  Students/observers sit in the back or along the side of workshop main and free to watch although do not involve in the

discussion and group work. §  Discussion and sharing of local cases brought up by participants, Q/A and active engagement with the panelists, the

instructor, and among the participants.

Method

“Resilient urban development” is one out of three transformative commitments for sustainable urban development (together with sustainable and inclusive urban prosperity, and social inclusion and poverty eradication) in the Quito implementation plan for the New Urban Agenda. The keyword “resilience” has been mentioned eleven times in six different pages and two full articles in the revised zero draft of the declaration showing the importance of the concept in the upcoming global urban agenda.
