Workshop title:

‘A Child’s Christmas in Wales’

Workshop Opening:

Opening questions about Christmas presents. Brief discussion comparing Christmas presents during Dylan’s childhood and now. NB - care is needed in the case of children from different religions taking part. In such case, words such as celebrations / birthdays could be used.Workshop Objectives:

By the end of the workshop, the groups will have thought of different words to fill in the blanks. They will have learnt that there isn’t one correct answer, and that their ideas could be as good or better than the original. Broad objective is to enhance vocabulary.Strategies

Organise the class in groups of two/three/four. Read the passage, with the help of some willing individuals. Class to decide which

words to fill the blanks. Appoint a typist to type answers. Allocate time for groups to think of appropriate words to fill in the blanks. Click on ‘Clue 1’ ‘Clue 2’ and ‘Clue 3’ at apt intervals if needed, to show four words at

a time. After the allotted time, listen to various words, and decide through a show of hands

which word is to be inserted. One word to be chosen by whole class. Click ‘Check’ to see if some match Dylan Thomas’ words. Read original words. Ask if some of their words are better than the original!

Follow-up idea

Learners could use some of their ideas to write a description of an interesting/unusual occurrence in one of their parties/celebrations.Extra activity:

Discuss the word ‘bombilating’. Is it a made up word or a real word? Invite them to make up their own word and its meaning.

KS2 English-medium Workshop

This workshop will provide opportunities to develop elements within the oracy strand of the Literacy Framework e.g. aspects such as speaking, listening, collaboration and discussion. Children will be given opportunities to develop skills within the oracy strand in order to complete their version of the ‘Child’s Christmas in Wales’. There are further opportunities for work within the writing strand when learnersstart to record and explore their thoughts, feelings and opinions through the use of language. Attention to accurate writing will be addressed through the use of appropriate language and vocabulary.

This workshop will provide opportunities to develop elements within the using number skills strand of the Numeracy Framework e.g. to identify age, date of birth and date of death of Dylan Thomas as well as other prominent dates in his life.
