History

Since 1887, Pioneer has remained based in Vancouver, designing and developing products that thrive in the cold, rugged, mountainous and rainy environments of British Columbia, the Yukon and Alaska. SureWerx and Pioneer have since grown to become the largest supplier of safety gear and outerwear to Canadians in every Province and Territory from Coast to Coast to Coast.

Pioneer was established in Vancouver over 130 years ago, just after the Great Fire of 1886 burned the city to the ground. It is commonly accepted that Charles Jones, the founder of Pioneer, constructed the tent that became Vancouver’s post-fire City Hall. Using canvas from sailing ships, he also built many of the tents which housed residents left homeless by the disaster. The business grew rapidly, producing clothing, tents and other gear to outfit the sourdough prospectors heading for the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush. Throughout the 20th century and to the present day, Pioneer continues to outfit foresters, oil patch crews, construction workers, miners, road and railroad builders, as well as outdoor enthusiasts of the Wild West and throughout Canada.
