KLM’s World Business ClassDutch down to the detail

KLM constructed its World Business Class down to the last detail. The introduction of the unique new full-flat seat is just one of the fea-tures that create even more comfort for our passengers. It comes stand-ard in our 787 Dreamliner as well as in all Boeing 747 and 777-200 air-craft, which have been redesigned and equipped with the new World Business Class. Next in line is the Boeing 777-300 fleet.

Dutch Design World-famous Dutch Design spe-cialists created a unique business class experience that enriches every passenger’s flight. The full cabin interior, including the new full-flat seats, were designed by Dutch Design icon Hella Jongerius. Dutch designer Marcel Wanders designed the tableware and the comfort bags were designed by Jan Taminiau. Even the meals and wines on board have a Dutch touch, as they are prepared in

cooperation with Michelin-awarded Dutch top chefs and selected by the famous Dutch wine specialist Hubrecht Duijker and the KLM wine panel.

Feel at homeWith Dutch Design at its heart, the World Business Class offers the perfect mix of comfort, individual-ity and personal space. The full-flat seat lets you sleep in a fully flat position, as though you’re in a real bed. And in our Boeing 787 Dreamliner every seat has direct aisle access. Together with the personal attention of our crew, the World Business Class has all the comforts of home and offers a memorable travel experience. We hope to welcome you on board soon!

Supreme comfort and more personal space

KLM introduces a full-flat seat made for its passengers’ comfort.

Full-flat seatThe new seat enables passengers to recline fully flat into a bed position, and is also one of the longest seats in the air. A real bed like this calls for comfortable accessories, such as a pillow. The positioning of the new full-flat seats in the cabin, the palette of warm colours that differ per seat, storage space and many smart design elements provide supreme comfort and more personal space. These full-flat seat characteristics together create a personal throne, designed to satisfy the passenger’s needs.

5 different colours The fabric of the new full-flat seat covers has the elegant style of a classic mens suit, made from the finest sheep’s wool and with a series of five subtle colours: aubergine, dark brown, night blue, cobalt and dark grey. The use of five different seat cover designs serves to differentiate one seat from the seats around it, drawing a distinction between ‘my space’ and ‘your space’. It’s a new level of personal comfort.

More comfort is provided by an extra control panel, which allows passengers to adjust the lighting and seat positions, while lying in full flat position. In addition, the lighting brings out the colour of the seats beautifully. It creates the feeling of sleeping under a soothing KLM blue sky.

Simplification, softening and enrichment

Hella Jongerius is one of the major designers today and a world-famous representative of Dutch design. She is known for the special way she fuses industry and craft, high and low tech, tradition and the contemporary.

Cabin interiorFor KLM’s World Business Class, Hella designed the new cabin interior. She crafted the compartment, from the carpet and curtains to the new full-flat seats. Hella’s approach – based on the starting points simplification, softening and enrichment – can be recognized in elements like handcrafted details, in the

way the distractions on board are minimized and in the use of warm colours. ExperienceHella Jongerius values KLM’s guts to not choose the safe route of impersonal mass production, instead truly focusing on the personal comfort of its passengers. ‘Feeling comfortable is not the same as experiencing comfort. If you understand that it’s all about the emotional state of a passenger, you cover a much bigger world than just designing soft seats. My aim was to convert the World Business Class into a feel-at-home class.’

CURTAINHella Jongerius wanted to create a poetic experience. Inspired by bead curtains, she designed a pattern that creates the optical effect of a half-transparent division. A technique called double-faced weaving was used to create this unique curtain textile.

CARPETIn close collaboration with a Dutch cradle-to-cradle carpet producer, a sustainable concept was developed, based on high-quality recycled materials. Old KLM stewardess uniforms were used to spin new yarn, which was incorporated into the blue details of the carpet. The new carpets are also made with Norwegian sheep’s wool, which until recently was mere waste material. KLM is now the first airline in aviation history to use cradle-to-cradle carpeting.

Feel like a first-class restaurant guest

Famous Dutch designer Marcel Wanders designs architectural, interior and industrial projects. He is most famous for his ‘Knotted Chair’, which has been acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York as part of its permanent collection.

UniqueMarcel created over 40 pieces of cutlery and tableware and adds new elements to the collection every year. Each piece is beautifully crafted and perfectly matched. His designs have an

unmistakably Dutch signature. Marcel Wanders on his work: ‘I wanted to make travellers feel like they are a first-class restaurant guest.’

TABLEWAREIn designing the new tableware elements, Marcel Wanders has taken into account the wishes of customers, the working procedures of cabin crew, as well as environmental considerations. For example KLM has reduced the environmental impact by limiting the weight of its tableware. The lighter the load on board an aircraft, the less fuel it burns, resulting in lower CO2 emissions.

World Business Class meals are prepared by Dutch top chefs, who create ever-changing menus inspired by destinations and fresh products. Because taste at higher altitudes differs from taste on the ground, they tailor each meal accordingly.

KLM works exclusively with Michelin-awarded chefs such as Onno Kokmeijer, Sergio Herman, Margo Janse, Jonnie Boer and Richard Ekkebus. Until October 2016 Jacob-Jan Boerma will be responsible for the World Business Class meals.

MenusMeals consist of an appetizer, a main dish and a dessert. The menus vary regularly and the ingredients they use are ‘refreshingly genuine’: open, honest, accessible, intense and transparent.

Renowned Dutch wine specialist Hubrecht Duijker and the KLM wine panel know their wines. Hubrecht Duijker has written dozens of well-respected books on wine. Together with the Dutch top chefs KLM is working with, he selects wines from all overthe world.

Hubrecht Duijker and the wine panel are not only skilled in pairing wines to menus, but also understand the nuanced differences in taste that occur at high altitude. The result is a most exclusive on-board wine selection.
