Welcome to the 2019-20 Enrollment Options Guide!
Welcome to the San Diego Unified School District and thank you for trusting us with the education of your children. We respect and share your wish to see every child graduate with the skills, motivation, curiosity, and resilience to succeed in his or her choice of college and career. This guide is designed to share some of the ways we keep our commitment to help every student succeed.
Neighborhood schools are at the heart of our district vision, and each of our neighborhood elementary and middle schools pro-
vides students with individualized lesson plans, state-of-the-art computer technology, and a foundation in the visual and performing arts. By attending their neighborhood school, children develop bonds with neighbors that follow them through high school.
Each of our neighborhood high schools offers a student-centered culture that provides young minds with access to a rigorous academic curriculum, including college preparatory courses and advanced placement (AP) classes. Students also have the opportunity to participate in CIF athletics and get exposure to career opportunities.
There is so much amazing work being done by our students and staff across San Diego that we could not share everything with you in a single catalogue. The purpose of this guide is to provide a sample of some of this work and inspire your family to find out more. As always, our Neighborhood Schools and Enrollment Options office is ready to assist you in that process.
We look forward to working with your family to help all students thrive.
Sincerely,
Cynthia “Cindy” Marten Superintendent, San Diego Unified School District

CLAIREMONT high school
CRAWFORD high school
Every San Diego Unified high school offers college and career “pathways” aimed at preparing students for a successful future. Pathways provide students with rigorous academic and career/technical education courses in high-skill, high-wage, and high-growth fields. By combining quality classroom instruction with work-based learning experiences, pathways emphasize both college and career preparation.
Students are guaranteed access to the high school serving their community, although they may also qualify for other options. To begin preparing even the youngest learners to be successful in high school, neighborhood elementary and middle schools may offer classes aligned with the pathways emphasized by their local high school. These co-hesive communities of neighborhood schools are typically called school “clusters.”

22 SAN DIEGO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT ENROLLMENT GUIDE 2018/2019
Enrollment GuidelinesVOLUNTARY ENROLLMENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM (VEEP)
VEEP offers limited transportation to encourage students from one community to attend approved pattern schools outside their neighborhood. Eligibility is determined by the student’s geographic elementary school of residence, regardless of school of attendance, and by space availability. The program is open to middle and high school students residing within a specific boundary of a school that has an approved VEEP pattern. For more info please visit: https://www.sandiegouni-fied.org/neighborhood-schools-and-enrollment-options.
INTERDISTRICT TRANSFERS
Students living or moving outside of the San Diego Unified School District must submit a School Choice application online at www.sandiegounified.org/apply. Once a student is accepted by a school, the family must complete an interdis-trict attendance permit by going through the resident school district office. These permits are allowed for School Choice/Open Enrollment and Magnet programs only, and do not apply to VEEP. Approval of an interdistrict attendance permit means a student has a valid reason to enroll in a school in the district. However, it does not guarantee enrollment at a particular school. Students do not need to re-submit a School Choice application each year. It is important to note that some district schools cannot accommodate interdistrict students due to limited capacity. Transportation is not provided.
LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS
New students at Barnard, John Muir Language Academy, and Longfellow must meet foreign language competency requirements if applying after first grade.
MAGNET SCHOOLS PROGRAM
Magnet schools offer students the opportunity to learn in an environment geared toward their passion and skills. Unique programs include Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM); Creative and Performing Arts; International Baccalaureate Studies; and Language Immersion, among other options. Magnets provide in-depth, innovative learning opportunities while meeting rigorous Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and/or Califor-nia State Standards. Students committed to a specific theme are given first priority to continue in that theme (continuity) as they progress from elementary to middle to senior high.
PRIORITIES
All on-time applications are sorted by specific priorities including residence. For more information please visit:
https://www.sandiegounified.org/neighborhood-schools-and- enrollment-options, and select Enrollment Priorities.
SENIOR PRIORITY FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO HAVE A CHANGE OF RESIDENCE
Senior priority is available only to students in good standing who move during the 11th or 12th grade school year and who continue to attend the same school, allowing them to gradu-ate with their classmates. The student does not need to sub-mit a School Choice application. This priority is contingent on sufficient space in the school, transportation guidelines, and the principal’s approval. If the student has moved to another district, an interdistrict attendance permit must be completed.
SHARED BOUNDARIES
Farb and DePortola middle schools share an attendance area as well as Innovation and CPMA middle schools. All schools serve Grades 6-8. Please contact the schools or the Neighbor-hood Schools and Enrollment Options office for more information. Dana (Gr. 5 and 6) and Correia (Gr. 7 and 8) middle schools also share an attendance area.
SPECIAL EDUCATION
Students receiving Special Education services may submit a School Choice application online. There is no special priority provided. The availability of some Special Education services may vary from school to school. Pupils accepted to a site that does not offer the appropriate setting per the IEP may be offered a different school site.
SPECIALIZED HIGH SCHOOL COURSES
The district gives priority to high school students wanting a special course not offered at their neighborhood or current high school. The request is handled on a case-by-case basis. A special request to enroll in a course at another school must be submitted in writing at the same time a School Choice application is submitted online by the November 13 deadline.
The following applies to requests for a specialized course:
• Available to high school students only
• Student must have prior studies in the subject area.
• Student may attend the school only while enrolled in the course
• School must have available space in the course
• Requests will not be granted at magnet schools
• Requests should be sent to www.sandiegounified.org/forms/enrollment-options-contact-form prior to the November 13 deadline
STUDENTS WHO MOVE OUT OF THEIR RESIDENT SCHOOL BOUNDARY
You must re-apply at www.sandiegounified.org/apply in order to continue at that school the following year. Only one appli-cation per pupil is accepted. No special priority is given to students who were resident students in the past.
TRANSFERS
Students who enroll in a program should remain in the school for the school year for which they enroll. Changing schools can impact a student’s eligibility for athletics. For immediate athletic eligibility contact the district Athletics Office at (619) 725-7126. Students may return to the resident school during the first three weeks. After the first three weeks of the school year, students wishing to enroll in the resident school must file an Enrollment Options Transfer Request form, and have the agreement of the resident school principal.
The transfer request only allows the student to return to the resident school. Students who transfer from the non-resident school and then wish to return must resubmit a School Choice application, and are subject to all enrollment eligibility and criteria.
TRANSPORTATION
School bus transportation is limited and may be available to select magnet and VEEP receiving sites. Minimum ridership and distance out required. Some neighborhoods provide intracluster transportation. Please visit the Transportation website for current bus service information at www.sandiegounified.org/transportation-services.
