World class fishing and recreational opportunities abound in a true wilderness experience here in Alaska. The location of Stonewood Fishing Lodge could not be better- nestled on the shores of beautiful Lake Clark and within the Bristol Bay watershed. Lake Clark Alaska is a piece of paradise and there are few places in the world that compare to the all around beauty, adventure, and exceptional fishing. This watershed is the most productive commercial and sport fishing region in the world and is also Alaska’s only designated trophy Rainbow Trout area.

We invite you to visit us in Alaska at our world class recreational lodge where we look to make each guests stay with us personal, memorable, and fulfilling. You, as our guests, decide on a host of available daily excursions from fishing to bear viewing to sight seeing- our lodge has something for everyone! Each day of your trip brings new and exciting locations, pristine clear waters, and the thrill of adventure.

Alaska truly is the last frontier full of wildlife, tundra plains, incredible mountains, and land dotted with lakes and criss-crossed by rivers. Glacial-fed streams flow crystal clear water from the mountains across the rolling landscape to the sea. This pure area is full of nutrients and creates an environment that allows fish to grow to huge sizes. We operate two first class lodges in the very best available fishing dates that enables us to fish all five Salmon species and the most productive Rainbow Trout and Northern Pike areas. Anglers worldwide view this region as the pinnacle of sport fishing!

Getting to Stonewood Lodge Book your flight to Anchorage Alaska and you can choose to either overnight or come straight out to the lodge. We organize a charter flight direct to the lodge around our guests schedule which allows you and your group to travel seamlessly and without delay. Many guests prefer to head straight to Lake Clark after arrival in Anchorage to relax in the comforts of the lodge while preparing for the upcoming days of fishing and recreation. We are a remote wilderness lodge accessible only by aircraft- you will find no roads here just a few trails, giving our guests a true wilderness experience. The premiere location of Stonewood Lodge overlooks the water of Lake Clark, which flows into Lake Iliamna and the Kvichak River.

We promote catch and release on most freshwater species which is the upheld practice for fishing in this region. For those wanting to have a visual remembrance of a particular fish, reproduction mounts of your trophy fish are available. For salmon that is caught, we will freeze and pack your salmon in a waterproof wax box or cooler so you can take it home with you and enjoy some fillets cooked up on your own grill.

that will be one of the most memorable trips of your life, come to Stonewood Lodge and see all that Alaska has in store for you. We have all the qualities of a world class sportfishing and recreational lodge and provide the most comfortable of settings for our guests to relax

in after enjoying a spectacular outing fishing or sight-seeing. As sole owners of Stonewood Lodge and Cavner and Julian Inc., we have a desire to

Sockeye Salmon June 27th through October - The Kvichak River not only produces the largest Sockeye run in Alaska, but the largest salmon run in the world. Sockeye Salmon can be caught on both fly and spin gear and the fish weight averages around 5 - 10 pounds. A fisherman can view pools of thousands of fish which is an incredible sight to see, but even more exhilarating is having one of these fish on the other end of your line! You’ll be sure to take some fillets home of this great tasting fish. This is also a good time to fish for Northern Pike and Rainbow Trout as well as other species.

King Salmon June 18th through July 7th - We fish the most productive and largest King Salmon run in the world and there is potential to have 10 - 20 fish days. Kings can be taken home on a limited basis as well as any of the salmon we catch. The average size fish is 20 - 30 pounds and they are fresh in from the ocean. We start to catch kings at King Camp around June 18th and this is also an excellent time for Northern Pike and spring Rainbow Trout fishing.

Silver Salmon July 24th through October - We’ve got some great locations to fish for Silver’s, which are a very acrobatic and aggressive fish that strike hard. Anglers are very pleased with this fish as they are very sporting and exciting to bring in. A Silver weighs around 9 - 20 pounds and is excellent eating- you’ll want to fit in few of these fillets in your cooler to go home. The season dates work very well for fall fishing for Rainbow Trout, Northern Pike, Grayling and Sockeye Salmon.

Chum Salmon July 15th through September - Anglers can also have opportunities to catch Chum Salmon, especially on the overnight rafting trips. These are a beautiful addition to the fish species we focus on and the average weight is 7-15 pounds. Chum strike aggressively and are a pleasure and challenge to catch.

Northern Pike are definitely here and in impressive numbers and size. We take care to assist an angler, if desired, in catching and reeling in a 40+ inch Northern Pike. Anglers can cast both with a fly rod or spin tackle as we have great success with either method. Fishing is done by either wading through grassy flats or from the boat or a combination of both. Sight casting can also be done here which is a real pleasure and we’ve found frog and mouse patterns to work incredibly well in our areas.

Lake Clark and it’s tributaries are over 60 miles of cool clear water and the lake has depths of up to 900 feet and is the 2nd deepest lake in Alaska. It is unusual to have a lake of this size provide such remarkable high quality fishing, but Lake Clark is an exception. Numerous rivers pour fresh oxygenated water into the lake and combine with a rich nutrient base that help the fish grow impressively large. In the world of fishing this is an ideal habitat for Northern Pike, Lake Trout, Char and Arctic Grayling.

Lake Trout & Arctic Char both present some great fishing opportunities in this region, with ideal dates for fishing from June - October. We fish by either trolling with the boat or casting from shore and have reeled in sizable fish both ways. Trolling for Lake Trout after dinner at the lodge is a perfect way to finish off the evening. There is also a variety of Char found in this part of Alaska, named Dolly Varden, that are a beautiful fish to catch. Char and Trout live in most all of the lakes we fish and can grow in excess of 30 inches.

Our guides are true professionals and skilled in all fishing methods. We are happy to show you new techniques to further your personal goals as a fishermen or to help the beginner learn the art of fishing. Our guides also know the importance of assisting you in catching that monster fish, such as a huge Northern Pike. Shore lunches are one of our guides’ specialties and they are famous for creating delicious lake and stream side lunches, often prepared with a small fire to enjoy some freshly caught fish. You can be sure your guide will get plenty of photos of you and your prized catches throughout the day as well.

The best dates to catch rainbow trout while at the lodge are June 10 - October 10. It is especially good in June through mid July and in late August through October. Alaska’s top Rainbow Trout come from our watershed, including 15 pound and 30 inch class fish with various streams peaking at different times of the season. The streams within Katmai National Park will produce a dozen plus fish per person in a day. July is an excellent time for fly fishermen to enjoy the best Rainbow Trout fishing in the world as far as numbers go and novice and expert alike will have a blast. We do have a specialty with a few rivers for spring Rainbow that can be best right at the last two weeks of June and first week of July. These are best accessed with one of our fishing rafts witha casting platform.

We have more than 16 rivers we fish for Rainbow Trout - some are good for a half day of fishing and some are good for overnight and rafting trips. We provide our clients with the highest quality fishing experience possible and focus on the rivers that present the best Rainbow fishing. The Largest Rainbows are targeted in dates from September into early October. This time of year is not for the faint at heart as the weather does get chillier and the wind can be a bit stronger. For those dedicated fishermen, this time of year presents the trophy Rainbows everyone dreams of the fishing can be phenomenal.

For Grayling, the best dates are anytime in June - October. What they feed on and their habits vary through the season, but on any of the dates you could choose to visit the lodge the Grayling fishing will always be good. They love to bunch up in clear pools and feed on insects and our dry flies provide us with unbelievable fishing in those moments.

If you have never fished with a fly rod or need brushing up, it is no problem. We have quality equipment at no additional charge and our guides will teach you the art of fly fishing. Grayling is the perfect species to learn or practice on as you can see the fish in the water and cast your dry fly just up steam. Casting is not a problem as you only have to cast a few feet in front of you and the fish are fairly eager in taking a variety of flies. Grayling is the perfect specie to practice on just before your more technical day of Rainbow Trout fishing.

Location We are a remote wilderness lodge. The area is not accessible by vehicle, only by aircraft. We are southwest of Anchorage within the Chigmit Mountains and at the edge of the Aleutian Mountain Range. The Lake Clark region is known by many to be Alaska’s Switzerland because of the large surrounding mountains. These towering mountains lead many to believe we are at a high elevation when in actuality we are at 240 feetabove sea level.

Alaska truly is the last frontier and the Bristol Bay watershed is the world’s most sought after fishing. Our fishermen choose from daily outings that are minutes by float plane, wheel plane, prop or jet boat ride to pristine waters of fantastic fishing.

June Fishing:After a long winter the fish are ready to bite and are awaiting the millions of salmon fry headed to the ocean. The following fish take almost  any fly: Rainbow Trout, Arctic Char, Grayling, Lake Trout, Dolly Varden, and Northern Pike. June is a dry fly paradise. Red salmon and King Salmon are available toward the end of this month.

July Fishing:This is the best month for the King and Sockeye Salmon run. Dry fly fishing is still excellent for Rainbow Trout, Grayling, Arctic Char, and Northern Pike. Pink Salmon becomes available during this month as well as salt water species such as Halibut and Rockfish.

August & September Fishing:Salmon are in full spawning activity and the Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden, and Arctic Char follow them feeding on the salmon eggs. This makes for easy fishing. The Silver Salmon are extremely acrobatic. In September, fish need to feed heavy for the coming winter - Rainbow Trout and other species are at their largest, making this an awesome time to collect trophy fish of any type such as a 15 pound Rainbow, which is not uncommon.

400 Miles further down the Alaska Peninsula from Stonewood Lodge, is a land that is virtually unchanged where time seems to stand still. Our Peninsula Fish Camp sits in the heart of this country, surrounded by towering mountains and overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Beautiful black sand beaches are mere feet away and the ocean teems with an abundance of marine life. Our guests have the chance to see and experience the vast ruggedness and wonderful fishing of this great area, in an area that very few ever visit.

Untouched waters for Halibut, Cod, Crab and Shark abound and short rivers pour straight from volcanic and glacier-clad peaks to make up the very best Salmon habitat. Silvers, Reds, Pinks, and Chum Salmon all have runs in the rivers we fish here. It is a great area for combining fishing for freshwater and saltwater species- many times fishing both in the same day.

Photography Opportunities are endless as there are incredible sightings of a variety of marine mammals, wildlife, and exceptional landscape. From seals and sea otters and migrating groups of whales to the giant Brown Bears walking the beaches and looking for a good fishing spot of their own, your camera will be busy in action. You may also get some photos of a scampering fox, eagles roosting, and wolves traveling by or of some of the great variety of waterfowl in the area.

The Lodge has guest rooms, a warm fire, running water, and kitchen facilities to fill your appetite with gourmet meals. With power from a generator, any camera equipment can be recharged daily ensuring you won’t miss out on any opportunities because of a dead battery. Even in this remote setting we have created a lodge to serve our guests with modern facilities but still keep a simple and rustic feel that provides all ofthe comforts and amenities needed to make your stay remarkable.

This is our backyard in Lake Clark National Park - full of life, amazing scenery, unnamed peaks, astounding beauty, and life long fulfillment. Preston Cavner, owner of Stonewood Lodge, has been exploring this hidden gem of a National Park since 1996. He was quickly captured by the true wilderness and found himself relocating to the area that year as a lifelong resident. This is the first region he began guiding from and is still one of his more favored areas to hike and explore. This true wilderness area is an opportunity for visitors to experience a world completely untouched. Whether rafting, hiking, fishing, or boating and experiencing this life with Preston Cavner or his staff you will be forever amazed by the untouched pure Alaskan beauty, history, culture and a pioneering and traditional lifestyle.

The following is an itinerary of one of our favored trips into the back country.

Day 1. Fly from Anchorage to Lake Clark and move into Stonewood Lodge while unwinding from travel. Your guide will help with organizing of your equipment and any additional equipment being loaned to you for the duration of the trip. Back packing is not completely necessary as we have pack dogs and guides to help carry things. As desired, on this day we have local activities such as stopping into the National Park field headquarters visitor’s center. Introductory lessons to flyfishing or kayaking are also good options for this day. This is a guided day in preparation for the trekking adventure so anything needing assistance or training is good to address. In the evening just before or after a buffet and gourmet/traditional dinner we will do an orientation complete with a slide show presentation in the debriefing conference room and discuss the route, photography opportunities, camping, bear awareness, and cultural interests, etc.

Day 2. (A day or two of fishing can be substituted at the beginning or end of the trekking trip - however for the purposes

of this itinerary we will move directly into the trips) We will gather for our flight by float plane bound for Turquoise Lake. This flight is about 35 min with a bit of sight-seeing along the way. We will view the Aleutian Mountain Range as we depart through the Chigmik Mountains and into the Alaska Range. We will have a view of the many lakes and our route of travel and a chance of sighting some Alaskan wildlife. Soon after arrival we will pitch our tents near Turquoise Lake. Guides will prepare a shore lunch along with freshly caught fish and then we will begin an afternoon exploration hike amongst the headwaters of the Turquoise Glaciers, towering granite cliffs, cascading waterfalls - approximately a 10 mile round trip. All snacks are included while traversing and then back to the shores for a relaxing dinner by the emerald waters.

Day 3. After a hot drink and breakfast we will pack up for the trek through the Mountains viewing river and waterfalls while on the route. Our high camp will be just down from the mountain pass. Breathtaking views and wildlife are in route with typical spotting of Dall Sheep, Marmots, and a possible grizzly bear or two. We will traverse a few small glaciers en-route for the peak and we’ll be sure to take plenty of photographs along the way. You will be surrounded on all sides by high country and peaks in every direction. Dinner is enjoyed heartily and a good night’s sleep closes out the day.

Day 4. This day will include side trips and hiking amongst the peaks before breaking camp and trekking down through the mountain valley. Camp will be pitched on the shores of Twin Lakes this evening and we will fill our time with fishing and an elaborate meal as we relax around the campfire. You’ll have 360 degrees of awe-inspiring views to take in and enjoy.

Day 5. We will pack our camp and go by float plane - if weather/time schedule allows we will stop in for a quick visit to Dick Proenneke’s cabin for a tour before returning to Lake Clark and Stonewood Lodge. After showers and a buffet lunch at the lodge, we will embark on a choice of fishing, rafting or kayaking side trip. The evening will round out with a debriefing in the rec room and viewing the photos from the trip on the slide projector.

Day 6. An optional day of fishing, kayaking, or sight seeing. This day can be used for an extensive day fishing and exploring the many rivers flowing into Lake Clark or it can be used for exploring the Headwaters of Little Lake Clark and Cave Falls.

Day 7. Another large breakfast and preparations for departure. Maybe a visit to Lake Clark Visitors center. Exchanging pictures with guides and other participants and a scenic flight to return to Anchorage.

Alaska is where you can still experience the last frontier.Lake Clark National Park and Katmai National Park are unmatched when it comes to a true wilderness experience, as they are only accessible by air. Our bear viewing and scenic trips are staged from Stonewood Lodge in Lake Clark with daily outings to the most pristine locations. This allows for a comfortable and accommodating base featuring filling meals, restful sleep, equipment re-charging, and opportunities for photo reviewing and instruction. These trips offer each person their own unique exploration and adventure and are guided by Preston Cavner who enjoys sharing each amazing location with guests.

Bear Viewing, Landscape & Wildlife photography at its finest!This trip is limited to 8 maximum guests, making it personable and allowing ample time for photography opportunities:

- The incredible size of the state of Alaska has often limited people. To venture off the road system takes great planning and preparedness, but offers the advantage to see more, do more, and experience more of the true Alaska

- There is no hassle of dealing with large tour groups and their set interests, which in the end can have most of the time spent traveling on a tour bus.

- Lake Clark National Park is the meeting place for the Arctic/Interior, Aleutian, and Coastal/Pacific Rainforest climates. These ecosystems mix together and provide a great place to see characteristics from all over Alaska in one place.

- There are plenty of majestic mountains, cascading waterfalls, pristine lakes and rivers, lush vegetation, and a host of wildflowers to photograph.

- Trips include visiting the famous Brooks Falls. There you will be able to photograph a large amount of bears at one time as they feed on the salmon running up the river.

- Land next to a glacier and view up close the ever-changing glacier face and surrounding granite cliffs and steep mountains

- For those interested in furthering their photography skills, additional instruction and debriefing will commence in the evenings at the lodge.

- We operate our Bear Viewing and Alaska photography trips in June and July.

A bear viewing or scenic trip to Alaska will inspire the imagination and is truly the journey of a lifetime. This trip is highly recommended if you are looking for a total Alaskan adventure and to travel to places very few have ever seen. Come and experience Alaska, we have no doubt they will be some of the most memorable highlights of your life!
