Motorola powers fuel cell developmentfuel which will be easier to sourcein some nations and situations. The fuel is easier to handle andhas a high energy density.

Fuel cell technology is shrink-ing and Motorola is actively work-ing with partners to investigatethe feasibility of fuel cells in alltypes of mobile communications

including mission critical radios. In many mission critical opera-tions, there is a need for long periods of use without the abilityto recharge the unit.

Fuel cells offer the promise ofextended periods of use withoutthe need to return to base torecharge. They can also be used

to charge TETRA radios in remotelocations, for example whereTETRA is being used in an emer-gency and no power is available.Small fuel cells using liquid fuelsare being evaluated as a meansof charging several radios at onetime in a compact desk-top unit.Stand W

Motorola is showing a Dimetra IP TETRA base station with an innovative fuel cell that incorpo-rates a reformer so that the basestation can run using a water/methanol mix. This can overcomeany supply issues associated withhydrogen, making the fuel cell a viable solution in many more lo-cations and in developing areasof the world.

A hydrogen system is suitedfor more advanced countries because of its availability but inother nations the water/methanolmix may be more viable.

Hydrogen fuel cells are a verywell established technology, withbanks and IT rooms are usingthem more and more for powerbackup. However, because of itslow energy density, a number oflarge and heavy cylinders of hydrogen are required for a rea-sonable duration of power.

Using the reformer, the water/methanol mix makes a l iquid

Visitors were given a com-munication demonstration be-tween the MRCCC controlroom and a remote vessel, us-ing the wide band EADS TETRATHR880i. Clarity of voice ex-changes is crucial, as the noisewhich surrounds a powerfulboat cruising at an averagespeed is not insubstantial.

Visitors were also shown howthe Automatic Vehicle Location(AVL) feature whose rapid update rate (three seconds) enables an optimal resourcemanagement.

Taking advantage of having theCongress at a key customer lo-cation, EADS and the HongKong Marine Police organiseda site visit to their headquar-ters, located in the Sai Wan Horegion. The Hong Kong MarinePolice are the pioneer users ofTETRA in Hong Kong. The net-work contract was awarded toNokia in late 1999 and becomeoperational less than a year later.

The Hong Kong Marine police patrol 1651 square kilo-metres and 261 islands of HongKong’s territory. In addition to normal policing functions, the Marine Police fleet is alsoresponsible for maintaining ef-fective law and order withinHong Kong waters with partic-ular emphasis on countering illegal immigration and smugg -ling at sea.
