General informationFACTS ABOUT ESTONIA - www.visitestonia.com

Geographically, Estonia is on the north-eastern edge of the European Union, bordering Russia and Latvia. +Finland is a short hop across the sea - just 80 km away. +There are ferries to Tallinn from Helsinki (Finland) or Stockholm (Sweden). +Estonia is in the Schengen Area so we have open borders with the rest of Europe. +Brits, Americans, Canadians and Australians can also enter Estonia visa-free. +Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport, named after our late President, has direct flights all over Europe. +Estonia has a population of just 1.3 million but is larger than Denmark or Holland. +Everyone in tourism speaks good English and often German, Finnish, Russian and Swedish too! +Roads are traffic jam free. +Estonia is almost 50% forest. +

PÕLVA COUNTY (Põlvamaa) provides a ‘‘Green Experience’’ that combines distinctive natural beauty with the green lifestyle of the local people. The county offers a good mixture of relaxing or active holiday options and a rich cultural heritage. Põlva County lies in the southeastern part of Estonia which is both the highest and most topographically varied region in Estonia. Põlva County provides some of the most beautiful forests, mysterious rapid rivers along with the peaceful lifestyle of local country people.

VÄRSKA municipality is situating on eastern border of EU and there is possibility to visit Russia. Värska is a small area, around 700 inhabitants in the village and 1500 inhabitants in the parish, situated in the south-east of Põlvamaa. Several regional and some national sports events take place in Värska annually. Water park in Värska Spa and Pihkva lake offer good relaxing pos-sibilities for participants and spectators.

RÄPINA has long been renowned for its beautiful parks and gardens. The tradition of gardening excellence was established by the Sillapää manor, in the centre of Räpina. A gardening school opened its doors here in the early part of the 20th century. Värska-Räpina area has good conditions for outdoor sports. Here are beautiful landscapes with forests and lakes and well prepared sports facilities.

• Forest extraction roads which do not affect route-choice (i.e have dead end) and have worse than poor rideability have been mapped with continuous yellow lines (ISMTBOM 509.1 Narrow ride). Long and straight fire breaks/cleared borders between different forest ownerships have been mapped using the same symbol (i.e ISMTBOM 509.1 Narrow ride). Forest rides which do not have a clearly visible track/path along them (i.e are overgrown with short grass, moss etc), but have a surface allowing cycling have been mapped according to rideability.

• In open areas, some tracks and paths have been specially prepared or made more visible by cutting grass along the course of the track/path.

13. Terrain description and coursesLONG AND RELAY, Värska

Sand-based open pine-forest on the banks of Värska bay and Mustoja stream. Moderately hilly with a lot of medium-sized hills and depressions with 10 - 25 m of height difference in the central and southern part of the terrain, and flat areas with small contour details and many marshes on the rest of the area.

Well-developed network of paths in the vicinity of settlements and more sparse network in the wooded southern part. Majority of tracks are well-rideable with a firm grass and/or dirt surface; in dry conditions, some tracks with sand-surface get significantly less-rideable.

SPRINT, Räpina

Small town with a regular network of streets. Different types of built-up areas from private houses to blocks of flats, municipal buildings and historical industrial areas; parks and wooden areas along the river, around Sillapää castle and on the outskirts of town. Height differences less than 10 m.

Map details

• All maps surveyed in spring-summer 2012. All maps are drawn according to International Standard for MTB Orienteering Maps 2010.

• All maps will be printed on waterproof paper.

• Some areas contain many narrow meandering paths with medium rideability which have been mapped using continuous black lines (ISMTBOM 832 Path: fast riding) for better legibility.
