THE POPE'S INVITATION

Young people need to tell theworld: it is good to followJesus; it is good to go withJesus; the message of Jesus isgood; it is good to come outof ourselves, from the edgesof the existence of the worldand to bring Jesus to others!Three words: joy, cross, young people.

To tell the story of theWorld YouthDays is

like descri-bing ag r e a tm i r a -c l ewh i c hhas un-folded foralmost threedecades of hi-story.It was 1985 when Pope JohnPaul II had the idea to create ameeting with all the young peo-ple of the world, even if henever wanted to be consideredits founder (“The young peoplehave created them” he wouldrepeat many times). Followingthe first edition in Rome in1985, two years later it tookplace in Argentina in BuenosAires and at the end of the1980s the pilgrims found them-selves in Spain in the shadow ofthe Cathedral of Santiago deCompostela. An event which, for the first time, is held in sum-mer rather than on Palm Sun-day. In 1991 it was Poland’sturn to host the meeting. Withthe fall of the communist blockCzestochowa welcomed pil-grims from all over the world. Each time everything is perfec-ted: in 1993, in Denver (USA),the Stations of the Cross are in-troduced for the first time andthe event begins to achievemedia importance. The explo-

sion occurred in Manila (Phi-lippines) in 1995. In the

Asian country,which has aCatholic ma-jority, 5m i l l i o np e o p l ewelcomedPope Woj-tyla. In 1997

and in 2000 it isEurope's turn: Paris

and three years later theGreat Jubilee in Rome. Overtwo million people flock to thelevel ground of Tor Vergata topray with the Pope. With thestart of the new century it isCanada to host the event; in aworld which is still shaken bythe fall of the Twin Towers, theyoung people give all their af-

fection to a Pope, who is al-ready very ill. Following thedeath of John Paul II it will bePope Benedict XVI to continuethe journey and host the pil-grims in his native Germany. With the WYD in Cologne in2005 the theme is referred tothe Magi, whose reliquaries aresupposed to be preserved in thecity crossed by the Rhine.Three years later it will be Syd-ney (Australia) to welcome theyoung people and, finally, in2011 the Spanish capital sawthe invasion of two millionyoung people. In the yearswhen there is no internationalWorld Youth Day the meeting isorganised at diocesan level withdifferent national initiatives. The period in which it is cele-brated also changes: Palm Sun-day.

THE LOGO

The sentence chosen forWYD 2013 is taken from theGospel according to Mat-thew: “Go and make disciplesof all nations” (Matt.28,19).The missionary exhortationwhich Christ left to theChurch.

SPECIAL RIO DE JANEIRO

On 21st August 2011,at Cuatro Vientosairport, the Euchari-

stic celebration officiatedby who is now the PopeEmeritus Benedict XVI hadjust ended, when the samecommunicated the follo-wing message to two mil-lion people who had arrivedfrom 193 different coun-tries: “It is with great joythat I announce that theWorld Youth Day 2013 willbe held in Rio de Ja-neiro..” Twenty-three monthshave passedsince then, and we arenow veryclose tothis newW Y D ,the themeof whichis: “Go andmake disci-ples of all na-tions” from theGospel according toMatthew, 28,19.

To have the opportunity toparticipate, collaborate andbecome a tool so that thisday is transmitted to theRadio Maria stations ofthe five continents, toreach all those young peo-ple who cannot be presentin Rio, is something which Iwould never have imagined

to be able to do when I tookpart for the first time in aWYD, which was held inArgentina that year.

It was 1986 when the Bea-tified John Paul II an-nounced that the next worldyouth meeting would beheld in Argentina. It was thefirst time that this eventwas held outside Italy, andthe second visit of the Bea-tified Pope to the most sou-therly country of Latin

America.

So, in April1987, withthe motto“we our-s e l v e sh a v ek n o w nand putour faithin God’slove to-

wards oursel-ves” (1Jn 4,16)

more than a millionpeople arrived to the ap-pointment with John PaulII. Those days obviouslyhad a different structure anddynamic from those oftoday, which are enrichedby catechism, musical andmany other events.

During one of the celebra-tions officiated by JohnPaul II, a little before theend, there was a change inthe programme: the Popecalled all the concelebratingpriests to him, to greet usone by one. It was an ex-traordinary moment. Iwas a young priest at thetime and, on taking thehand of the Holy Father, felt not only his closeness, but also the need of beingconfirmed in Faith; ofbeing, through him, in com-munion with the Church ofJesus.

16 years have passed sincethat meeting, and today, to-

gether with an editorialteam of members of diffe-rent Radio Maria stations inthe world, I am preparing toparticipate in the Rio day, which will have a highlymissionary spirit. In thisway we will give life to themissionary task which PopeFrancis attributed to theWorld Family during theblessing on 11th May thisyear: “.. I encourage all thepeople of good will fromthe 65 countries of theworld in the 5 continentswhich participate in thesemissionary days".

We invite all listeners andusers of the Radio Mariawebsite to join us withtheir prayer, so that theGreat Communicator, theHoly Spirit, may ignite ourhearts, and we can respondwith and like Mary to themissionary call of Jesus.“Go and make disciples ofall nations” (Matt. 28,19).
