The people of Greece are inseparably connected to the land. The landhelped form their cultures i.e. fishing, mountains

Ancient Greece was broken into CITY-STATES (countries the size ofcities)

Even though these city-states were separate they share the same languageand much ( NOT ALL) of the same culture and did have some unityagainst foreign threats

RENAISSANCE (NEW BIRTH) TheRenaissance is one of the most interestingand disputed periods of Europeanhistory. Many scholars see it as a uniquetime with characteristics all its own. Asecond group views the Renaissance asthe first two to three centuries of a largerera in European history usually calledearly modern Europe, which began in thelate fifteenth century and ended on theeve of the French Revolution (1789) orwith the close of the Napoleonic era(1815). Some social historians reject theconcept of the Renaissance altogether.Historians also argue over how much theRenaissance differed from the MiddleAges and whether it was the beginning ofthe modern world, however defined.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vufba_ZcoR0

The Protestant Reformation was the 16th-century schism within Western Christianityinitiated by Martin Luther, John Calvin andother early Protestants. It was sparked by the1517 posting of Luther's Ninety-Five Theses. The efforts of the self-described "reformers",who objected to ("protested") the doctrines, rituals, and ecclesiastical structure of theRoman Catholic Church, led to the creationof new national Protestant churches. TheReformation was precipitated by earlierevents within Europe, such as the BlackDeath and the Western Schism, which erodedpeople's faith in the Catholic Church and thePapacy that governed it. This, as well asmany other factors, such as the mid 15th-century invention of the printing press, andthe fall of the Eastern Roman Empire, contributed to the creation of Protestantism.

Of the total population of Europe ofsome 730 million (as of 2005), over 80%or some 600 million fall within threelarge branches of Indo-Europeanlanguages, viz., Slavic, Latin(Romance) and Germanic. The largestgroups that do not fall within either ofthese, or the so-called separate groups, are the Greeks and Armenians (about12 million each) and the Albanians(about 8 million). Beside the Indo-European languages there are twoother major language families on theEuropean continent: Turkic languagesand Uralic languages. The Semiticlanguages that dominate the coast ofthe northern Africa as well as the NearEast are preserved on the Maltaislands, a Mediterranean archipelago. The Basque language is a linguisticisolate unrelated to any otherlanguages inside or outside of Europe.
