World Language Newsletter February 2017

World Language Curriculum We integrate the social studies standards and content into

Kindergarten—3rd grade Spanish class. In 4th grade, some social studies and

other content areas are integrated into Spanish class. All students receive 30

minutes of instruction three times in each six day rotation. Every year your child

will learn about a new Spanish-speaking area of the world. In Kindergarten, they

will learn about Cuba. In first grade, they will explore Honduras & Central

America. In second grade they will learn about Mexico. In third grade, they will

focus on Spain. In fourth grade, they will learn about Peru in South America.

Units Covered This Month: Kindergarten

Friendship and Valentine’s Day: descr ibe qualities of a good fr iend, identify

symbols of friendship and Valentine’s Day

Homes: descr ibe different types of homes in U.S. and Cuba (mater ials,

color), match homes with their environment (climate,

location, availability of materials)

First Grade African American History: study the lives & contr ibutions of famous

African Americans (Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Garrett Morgan, Harriet

Tubman), identify examples of fairness and injustice

Second Grade

Famous Leaders: study the lives & contr ibutions of Martin Luther

King, Jr. and César Chávez who both took a stand against injustice

Diversity: descr ibe the ways in which we are the same & different (physical

characteristics, language, interests)

Third Grade

Maps and Globes: identify locations on a map using lines of latitude &

longitude, identify and interpret different types of maps (physical, political,

climate)

Carnaval/Mardi Gras: descr ibe the celebration of Carnaval in Spain

(celebrated the week before Lent with no fixed date, parties, parades,

masks, and costumes)

Fourth Grade

Geography of Peru: r ead numbers (10s, 100s, 1000s), locate natural

characteristics (Lake Titicaca, Amazon River, Amazon Rainforest, Colca

Canyon, Andes Mountains, Sechura Desert) & cultural characteristics (capital

Lima, Cuzco, Arequipa, Callao, Iquitos, Machu Picchu), describe using the verb

“ser” & adjectives that match the feature they describe (big/little,

highland/lowland, long/short, deep, modern, ancient), describe

location using compass rose directions & the verb “estar”

The Spanish Activity Backpacks can be checked

out by students. Backpacks are filled

with story books—some bilingual and

some on CD, picture dictionaries,

flashcards, big and small puzzles,

activity books, games and more!

A special report card will come home from specials teachers on 2/2/17.

These report cards show information from specials teachers about the first semester of the school year.

These same scores will also be included on the 2nd trimester report card, but will not reflect any progress since

the end of the first semester. Specials teachers will send new report card feedback again at the end of the year.

Kindergarten Report Card Standards: Interpretive (Receptive) Language: Student interprets and understands oral and written

communication in the target language at an appropriate beginner level.

Productive Language: Student communicates through reading, writing, and speak ing in

the target language at an appropriate beginner level.

Cooperative Learning: Student respects self and others by listening, cooperating, and

following directions.

1st-4th Grade Report Card Standards: Reading: Reads and interprets text in the target language

Writing: Communicates through writing in the target language

Speaking: Communicates meaningfully in the target language

Listening: Interprets and understands oral communication in the target language

1st-3rd Grade Social Studies: Demonstrates an understanding of social studies concepts

A “3” is our goal. It shows proficiency. There will be lots of opportunities to learn and grow.

Plan de Idioma Mundial Integramos los estándares de estudios sociales en la clase de español en los

grados de kinder hasta tercero. En el cuarto grado, algunos estándares de estudios

sociales y otras temas están integrados. Los estudiantes reciben 30 minutos de

instrucción, tres veces en cada rotación de seis días. Todos los años su niño

aprenderá acerca de una nueva área hispanohablante en el mundo. En kinder, ellos

aprenderán acerca de Cuba. En el primer grado, ellos explorarán Honduras y

América Central. En el segundo grado, ellos aprenderán acerca de México. En

Primer Grado La historia afroamericana: estudiar las vidas y las contr ibuciones de

afroamericanos famosos (Martin Luther King, hijo, Rosa Parks, Garrett Morgan,

Harriet Tubman), identificar ejemplos de justicia e injusticia

Segundo Grado

Líderes famosos: estudiar las vidas y contr ibuciones de Mar tin

Luther King, hijo y César Chávez, quienes se opusieron a la injustica

Tercer Grado

Mapas y globos: identificar ubicaciones en un mapa usando líneas de latitud y

Amazonas, el cañón Colca, la cordillera de los Andes, el desierto Sechura) y

características culturales (la capital Lima, Cusco, Arequipa, Callao, Iquitos,

Machu Picchu), describir usando el verbo “ser” y adjetivos que coinciden con la

característica que describen (grande/pequeño, alto/bajo, largo/corto,

profundo, moderno, antiguo), describir ubicación usando las

direcciones de la brújula y el verbo “estar”

Esta boleta de calificaciones de los maestros de las clases especiales muestra información del primer semestre

del año escolar. Estas mismas calificaciones también estarán incluidas en el reporte del segundo trimestre,

pero no reflejará ningún progreso desde el final del primer semestre. Los maestros de las clases especiales

mandarán nuevas calificaciones al final del año. A continuación se presenta el significado de las calificaciones.
