Every year, on 31 May, WHO and partners mark World No Tobacco Day, highlighting the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption. Tobacco kills nearly 6 million people each year, of which more than 600 000 are non-smokers dying from breathing second-hand smoke Smoking is very addictive because tobacco contains a powerful drug called nicotine Cigarettes are deliberately designed to give you a fast nicotine hit Nicotine is a stimulant that increases your heart rate and affects many different parts of your brain and body. Smokers get a high because nicotine triggers the release of dopamine in the brain - a chemical linked to feelings of pleasure. It takes just 10 seconds for the drug to reach your brain from inhaled cigarette smoke Second-hand smoke is the smoke that fills restaurants, offices or other enclosed spaces when people burn tobacco products such as cigarettes, bidis and water pipes There are more than 4000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, of which at least 250 are known to be harmful and more than 50 are known to cause cancer How can the Government Help? Ban of Ads that promote tobacco branding and selling. Monitor tobacco use and prevention policies Protect people from tobacco use Offer help to quit tobacco use Warn about the dangers of tobacco Raise taxes on tobacco Smokeless Tobacco These consist of a mixture of betel nut (or areca nut), slaked lime and various herbs and spices, wrapped in a betel leaf. Why Do People Smoke?Smoking is very addictive because tobacco contains a

powerful drug called nicotine

Cigarettes are deliberately designed to give you a fast nicotine hit
