Energy Paramount for Latin America

• Large resources for renewable and non-renewable energy production X Continuous enegy crisis;

• Availability of land, sun, water and wind associate with mineral resources is a potential condition for agricultural and biodiversity X Areas with poverty and desnutrition;

• High active population however with relative low education X high income concentration and low IDH

America Latina Nuclear -facts • There are extensive uranium deposits in Latin America, concentrated in Brazil (fifth in

the world) and Argentina. • Brazil also has one of the largest thorium deposits in the world, though no country has

yet established a thorium-based fuel cycle; • Mexico, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, and

Uruguay – uranium mining project, but low quantities • Venezuela also has large thorium deposits. • Nuclear Fuel Cycle – Argentina and Brazil • Reactors : Argentina (3), Brazil (2) and Mexico (2). • Argentina: Another 2 reactors (Candu extended 1000Mw and a one PWR) • Mexico: PRODESEN 2018-2032 another 3 x 1400 Mw (2 in Laguna verde) para 2029

thru 2031 • In addition to the above power reactors, there are 24 research reactors in the region, of

which five are not currently in operation. • Peru and Chile both have two (one is not operational); and Colombia, Cuba, Jamaica,

Uruguay and Venezuela have one each (one also being non-operational). • Remaining 15 are in Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. • Latin America is also a potentially rich source of other minerals used in connectionwith

nuclear reactors: beryllium, hafnium, and zirconium.

Latin America integration: Nuclear Area

• Economical Integration is based mostly in two factors: Physical and Commercial Integration

• Physical Information: Most applied to borders and common resources (infrastructure, energy and others);

• Energy integration is based on:

– Commercial – Proximity, joint planning, Common regulation, ...

– Technological – Complimentary Programs, services

• Brazil – Key player

Challenges and Opportunities for Nuclear Power at Latin America

• Economical capacity for Infrastructure; • Availability of other Sources; • Technical Development; • Regulation Structure; • Dependency of supplying from foreign countries

• Demanding energy market for the future; • State programs for being more developed; • Generating a competency in nuclear field applied to other uses of Nuclear

Technology • Industrial development • Attendance of World Environmental Goals
