    The World of Corn

    U.S. Corn at a Glance2013

    Corn starch is preferred in manycommercial food applications dueto its translucent nature versusflour which is opaque.

    Corn starch can be used to createpolylactic acid polymers. Thesecan be processed into sustainableversions of fibers and plastics.

    Corn syrup is used as asweetener, thickeningagent and as a humectant,a water-absorbingingredient helping foodretain freshness.

    Only the starch is used to make

    ethanol. The remaining nutrients,protein, fiber and oil, knownas Dried Distillers Grains withSolubles are used as feed.

    *In dry-grind ethanol process.**In wet-mill ethanol process.Gluten feed is 20 percent protein and gluten meal is 60 percent protein.
