SHORT SYNOPSIS Dare To Be Different reveals how 80's music was really introduced to the US from Europe by Long Island's WLIR, which led to the rise of mega-groups like U2, The Police, Duran Duran, Joan Jett and Blondie. LONG SYNOPSIS Dare To Be Different is a feature length documentary revealing how 80's music was really introduced to the US from Europe. U2, Talking Heads, Depeche Mode, Blondie, Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, The Clash, The Cure: over half a billion records sold and you may never have heard of them if not for a small suburban radio station on Long Island, NY: WLIR. In August, 1982, a small group of radio visionaries knew they couldn't compete with the mega-stations in New York City. With one brave decision, they changed the sound of American culture forever. Program Director Denis McNamara, the 'LIR crew and the biggest artists of the era tell the story of how they battled the FCC, the record labels, mega-radio and all the conventional rules to create a musical movement that brought the New Wave to America.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT I had a great childhood growing up on Long Island, but it was not always a happy one. My parents had an ugly divorce when I was 11 years old. Things became complicated because my parents and their good friends switched partners and all remarried each other, which can be a whole movie in itself! My Dad and his wife moved to another state and I did not get along with my stepfather who lived with me, so life was tough. Music had, and has always been, an important tool for me to find peace and harmony in my life. I was a big fan of radio station WLIR. I was a listener with the old format, and when they changed format in 1982 to become the New Music Station, my world was changed forever. WLIR became my therapy, my safe place, my happy place. It kept me sane and introduced me to music from all over the world. This music was MY music, and not my parent’s music. I felt like I was part of a private club. It took me away from Long Island and to England, Ireland, Germany, Australia and many other countries just by simply listening to the music. The DJ’s were like family members and I was glued to the radio all the time. When I went away to college in upstate New York, I would tape the radio shows for hours and then bring those tapes upstate with me so that I had WLIR with me all the time! I have always cherished what WLIR did for me and my life on a personal level, and to this day, when I hear a WLIR song, it brings me back to that time and happy memories, not the sad ones. When I decided to do a documentary on WLIR, I was inspired by Facebook and all of the pages that were dedicated to this radio station that has not been around for over 30 years! Reading the posts, they sounded exactly like my experience with WLIR. We all shared the same fondness and respect for the station. I began to do research and found that not only was this such a beloved station by thousands of people, but it also had a compelling story behind it. Many people, including myself, never really knew what happened to WLIR. One minute it was there and the next day, it was gone! I knew that in order to begin my journey, I had to contact the program director - the famous Denis McNamara - and so I did. Denis and I have now been working together for almost 7 years on this film. Together, we have successfully contacted and interviewed many artists, club owners, music executives, DJ’s, other staff members and fans of the station. It has been a great thrill to meet all of these amazing people, hear their stories and see all the love and appreciation they had for WLIR. WLIR deserves to have their day in the spotlight! It was truly one of the most beloved radio stations that has ever existed, and that dedication and loyalty still exists today. This project has been a true labor of love. It has taken many hours of hard work and dedication -- but all worth it. I want to thank Denis as well as my brother, Jay Reiss, who has helped shape the story with his incredible writing talent. I would also like to thank my fellow producer, Roger Senders, and my editing team for all their incredibly hard work. I began this project in 2010 when my mom was first diagnosed with cancer and I promised her before she passed, that I would finish this film and make it a big success. I look forward to sharing this film with the world, and giving everyone the gift that I, and many Long Islander’s, had -- which was experiencing the greatest radio station that ever was… WLIR.

– Ellen Goldfarb

ABOUT THE FILMMAKERS

ELLEN GOLDFARB – Director / Producer Ellen Goldfarb is the Creator, Director and Producer of Dare To Be Different. Ellen grew up listening to radio station WLIR, which greatly impacted her life. She has produced and directed many projects including 2 concerts, but this is her first feature film. She studied in New York and took screenwriting classes through UCLA's extension program. Ellen is a major music buff and grew up listening to radio station WLIR. She experienced the format change in 1982 to “New Music” and was an avid listener and fan of the station. After the format change, like many in the greater New York area, Ellen remembers New Music WLIR becoming a central part of her life. Ellen created Dare To Be Different to document the history and energy of the amazing WLIR at its heyday in the 1980’s when it introduced New York and America to New Music and launched groups like U2, The Police and many others to greatness. Ellen started Jomyra Productions to house Dare To Be Different and other entertainment projects. Ellen is a born producer and director who is excellent at organizing, networking, creating and getting the job done. She is currently residing in Los Angeles with her husband and 2 children. Ellen comes from a family of entertainment industry folk. ROGER SENDERS – Producer Roger Senders is producer of "Dare To Be Different", which will have its world premiere in April 2017 at New York's Tribeca Film Festival. The documentary focuses on Long Island radio station – WLIR – that in the early 1980s blew up the mandated playlists of the day and instead dropped the needle on cutting-edge music from little-known bands. That led to a cult-like following of listeners and catapulted artists into successful careers. It was the first station to play many now well-known musicians. In addition to production, logistical and financial oversight for the documentary, Senders has been in private legal practice since 2003 in Culver City, Calif., where he represents entertainment clients and provides production legal services. Prior to entering private practice, Senders worked for the CBS Television Network in its Business Affairs department in Television City, Calif. He oversaw daytime and children’s programming, as well as specials including The Daytime Emmy Awards, The Rose Parade and the Thanksgiving Day Parade. He also worked licensing rights to music, film/video clips, merchandising and foreign distribution. Before that, Senders spent five years working as an apprentice and second assistant director in the film industry – including “The Fugitive” and “Star Trek,Generations" – and for television series –including "Get a Life,” “Star Trek, The Next Generation,” “Deep Space Nine, "Viper" and "Dinosaurs." His apprenticeship was part of the Directors Guild of America/Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers Training Plan. Born in Albany, Ore., Senders grew up on Mercer Island, Wash., a Seattle suburb. In his youth, he decided he wanted to teach, practice law and be in the entertainment industry – so set out to achieve those goals. While attending the University of Oregon, where he earned a Bachelor's of Arts in communications and a Master’s of Arts in education, he worked as an extra in the classic, “National Lampoon’s Animal House,” playing a Delta House pledge. After a stint teaching high school language arts, radio, television, forensics and directing theater, he was admitted to the Seattle University School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree. He then moved to Los Angeles, where he joined a firm and practiced law.

DENIS McNAMARA – Executive Producer Denis McNamara was a popular personality at WLIR's 92.7 frequency for over 15 years, while also overseeing the station's sound as Program Director. He was a childhood fan of music, shaped in the 1960's explosion of Rock, British Invasion, Psychedelic, R&B and Motown. McNamara first hit the airwaves in the 1970's while studying at NYU and becoming their legendary college station's first FM General Manager. He also interned at NYC Rock station WNEW-FM. Major star of the outlet Scot Muni helped mentor Denis and recommended LIR hire him, which they did in 1974. When Denis arrived for his first WLIR air shift, the other part-time announcer was the historic Rock DJ, "Murray the "K", known as the "Fifth Beatle" At WLIR, Denis became popular with listeners and management and was promoted to Music Director, then Program Director. The station evolved into one of the best progressive rock FM outlets in one of the most exciting Rock music markets in the world. As the movie explains, McNamara and WLIR changed music direction in the 1980's and its ultimate combination of success, scandal and sensational music is the story of the film. Denis went on to conduct interviews with hundreds of famous artists as well as introduce even more on concert stages throughout the NYC area. He became a successful A&R executive for International Music companies such as Polygram, Polydor, Universal, A&M and Decca. Artists he worked with then included Joan Jett, Van Morrison, Abba, Andrew LLoyd Webber, Hugh Jackman, the cast of "Wicked" and more. Denis runs his own consultancy company and works with media/music talents. He and his family still reside on Long Island. One day, he would like to run the F.C.C. GREG DANIELS – Cinematographer Greg Daniels is a long established cinematographer based in Los Angeles. Born on the east coast then attending college in the midwest, Greg continued west where he started in the film industry. Working his way up through the camera ranks, he drew from his experiences of working under some of the most talented cinematographers in the film industry including the late Harris Savides and Darius Khondji A.S.C. Building on what he learned from these masters, Greg developed his own style and eventually started shooting commercials, music videos and network television. However he finds the most satisfaction when shooting documentaries. Over his 25 year career Greg has traveled the world which has introduced him to many different people, cultures, and traditions. While shooting a documentary on Buddhism, he discovered the desire to connect with others is a universal feeling, and there is a common chord that is touched when you combine visually interesting storytelling with a shared emotion. It is with this belief he approaches every project. Greg has collaborated with some of the industry’s leading filmakers including Brett Morgen and legendary director and Academy Award winner Errol Morris. JAY REISS – Screenwriter Jay Reiss – Is one of the creators of The Twenty Fifth Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, which won two Tony awards, and made his Broadway acting debut as the Bee’s word pronouncer, Vice Principal Douglas Panch. He co-wrote the screenplay for the 2012 release, The Oranges, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, and starred Hugh Laurie, Leighton Meester, Allison Janney, Oliver Platt and Catherine Keener. His first film as director, the short, Dead Cat, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2013. He is the creator and co-host of the comedic/political/highly-informative podcast, Hot Summer Nights: Everything You Don’t Know About The Constitutional Convention of 1787. Jay a graduate of the The Juilliard School’s playwriting program.

ALLAN HOLZMAN – Editor

As director and editor of Steven Spielberg’s Survivors of the Holocaust, Allan won two Emmy Awards and a Peabody. His narrative feature Intimate Stranger, starring Deborah Harry, is Showtime’s highest rated movie and his documentaries Sounds of Memphis and Old Man River earned a combined eight best documentary film awards and an American Cinema Editors Eddie Award and nomination. Allan was also nominated for an Eddie for Apollo 11. He teaches film editing at USC School of Cinematic Arts and served for nearly a decade on the American Cinema Editors Board, creating the annual event Invisible Art/Visible Artists, featuring the Academy Award Best Editor nominees.
