Welcome to the World Travel Awards’ GalaCeremony. I’m very proud that Britain onceagain hosts this prestigious event in one ofthe most vibrant, dynamic and contemporarycities in the world.
Coming as the world arrives in London for theWorld Travel Market, we celebrate the best intourism – for Britain, a £114 billion industrythat is vital to the wellbeing of our economy.Supporting 2.6 million jobs and 200,000 smallbusinesses in the UK, tourism is central to ourefforts to emerge from one of the most severeeconomic downturns in living memory.
Although visits to many of the world’sdestinations have faced the pressure of thetough economic climate since the last WorldTravel Awards, the relative position of sterlingagainst the dollar and Euro have presented uswith a great opportunity. It has meant thatfor many, exploring all that Britain has tooffer has never been more affordable. Asanyone who has spent time with us will know, our destinations offer world-class service andquality assured, ‘star-rated’ accommodationfor every budget. We have a range of enviabletourism assets, from stunning landscapes tovibrant, multicultural cities. Our rich history of tradition, heritage and culture lives beside modern design, music, theatre and architecture.
We offer an unrivalled social season and acalendar of unbeatable events: from RoyalAscot to Cowes Week, the Edinburgh Tattooand Wales’ National Eisteddfod to theChelsea Flower Show. British destinationshave inspired some of the world’s greatest
authors and poets, and produced number onemusicians, leading fashion designers andaward-winning actors, as well as sportinglegends and iconic characters from HarryPotter to James Bond, Sherlock Holmes toRobin Hood.
A week ago, we celebrated the 1,000-daycountdown to the London 2012 OlympicGames and Paralympic Games when all eyesare on Britain for are the world’s biggestevent. Major events are an important part oftourism, helping draw visitors here, but theyare not the only game in town over thecoming years. They are just a part of a reallyexciting decade of sport with the 2010 RyderCup in Wales, the 2014 CommonwealthGames in Glasgow, and the 2016 RugbyWorld Cup in England, and who knows, maybethe FIFA 2018 World Cup! As well ascelebrating our sporting heritage and drawingvisitors to some of the world’s greatest‘cathedrals of sport’, events will get Britain onthe wish list of potential travellers who haveno historical ties to Britain. We have anunprecedented opportunity to deliver a world-class welcome to all visitors and thereby toenhance the image of the UK as a truly worldclass visitor destination.
I hope you have time to explore this historiccity and perhaps take a few extra days to seewhat else Britain has to offer you. Buthowever long you stay, I hope we willwelcome you again soon.

2009... History in the makingWorld Travel Awards
As well as addressing the challenges that adeteriorating world economy will bring to thetravel and tourism industry, the key messagein the latest UNWTO World TourismBarometer is that times of crisis often lead tothe biggest opportunities.
The industry is under no illusions that thecourse of 2009 will enforce wide-scalestrategic re-thinks and many tough decisionswill have to be made.
But what is just as certain is that the industryis a highly-resilient sector and will eventuallyreturn to strong growth.
These challenging economic times will onlysucceed in separating those companies whowith fortitude and vision remain unbowed intheir commitment to excellence from thosecompanies complacent or average.
Since 1993, “the Oscars of the travel industry”has stood unrivalled in impartially recognisingand rewarding those who set the standardsacross all sectors of travel and tourism.
This year, all eyes will be on London and theWorld Travel Awards Ceremony. Tonight’swinners will show what it truly takes to makea difference and will act as beacons of hopefor the rest of the industry.
History will prove that 2009’s World TravelAwards Winners will be those companies thatbest navigate economic fluctuations and willemerge from these challenging times withexponential growth, augmented market shareand galvanised reputations.
There has never been a more important yearfor positive action. Now is the time forindividuals to step forward and demonstratewhat can be done to make a difference.
Through an unswerving commitment toexcellence, through recognising examples ofbest practice and through collective learningand solidarity, these challenging timespresent us with the opportunity to re-enforcethe overall industry infrastructure.
2009 is a year of positive action for everyoneinvolved in the travel and tourism industry. We hope that World Travel Awards can playits part in helping the region to be in the bestpossible shape for the upturn.

Jon ScottJon Scott is not your typical singer-songwriter.You won’t find this Nigerian-born andLondon-based Afro-soul optimist wearingbusker chic, doing the usual circuit of openmics and toilet venues, or hanging abouthopefully in Hoxton. Because Jon Scott tookhis parents very seriously when they packedhim off to London as a wide-eyed teen tostudy for a proper career. So seriously that, when he isn’t writing, recording andperforming his inspiring songs of love, peaceand unity, running his own Brown Babes label, and being a proud father, he has a veryproper job. Jon Scott is probably the onlymusic-obsessed singer-songwriter who ownshis own law firm in the city of London.
