Worldcon 75: 2017 Hugo report #1 Votes on the final ballot This is the first of five reports on the 2017 Hugo Awards. The second report, which contains the nomination statistics, will be distributed simultaneously with this after the Hugo ceremony on 11 August. The other three, which contain further nomination statistics, a comparison of the EPH tallying system with the old system and the proposed EPH+, and a record of decisions made by the 2017 Hugo administrators, will be made available to the WSFS Business Meeting on 12 August. 3,319 votes were cast on the final ballot. 3,315 were received electronically, and 4 in hard copy by mail. This was the third highest total in the history of the Hugos, higher than the 3,130 cast in 2016, but lower than the 5,950 cast in 2015 and the 3,587 cast in 2014. The following results were decided by margins of fewer than 50 votes. Closest results among winners Best Related Work was decided by a margin of 32 votes. Best Novel was decided by a margin of 43 votes. Best Fan Writer was decided by a margin of 66 votes, but with the eventual winner avoiding elimination by 19 votes on the penultimate round and by 3 votes on the round before that. Worldcon 75: 2017 Hugo report #1 Votes on the final ballot

This is the first of five reports on the 2017 Hugo Awards. The second report, which contains the nomination statistics, will be distributed simultaneously with this after the Hugo ceremony on 11 August. The other three, which contain further nomination statistics, a comparison of the EPH tallying system with the old system and the proposed EPH+, and a record of decisions made by the 2017 Hugo administrators, will be made available to the WSFS Business Meeting on 12 August.

3,319 votes were cast on the final ballot. 3,315 were received electronically, and 4 in hard copy by mail. This was the third highest total in the history of the Hugos, higher than the 3,130 cast in 2016, but lower than the 5,950 cast in 2015 and the 3,587 cast in 2014.

The following results were decided by margins of fewer than 50 votes.

Closest results among winners

Best Related Work was decided by a margin of 32 votes.

Best Novel was decided by a margin of 43 votes.

Best Fan Writer was decided by a margin of 66 votes, but with the eventual winner avoiding elimination by 19 votes on the penultimate round and by 3 votes on the round before that.

2nd place in Best Short Story was decided by a margin of 2 votes.

4th place in Best Graphic Story was decided by a margin of 2 votes.

3rd place in Best Fancast was decided by a margin of 3 votes.

Note: The Hugo Awards are decided by transferable vote, where each place is determined by transferring votes from the least popular candidates until one has a majority. In addition, there are two further tests for each category: the combined first preference vote for nominees other than No Award must exceed 25% of the total vote; and the winner must have more preference votes than No Award. Every category in 2017 passed both of those tests.
