Have· you ever thought that your car does not perform so well at high altitude~ ?. . It doesn't. Driving to ·Kosiusko, it develops pm~y 75 per cent of its normal power when at the top of the ascent. Just as m6untain climbers in very high altitudes require oxygen to keep them going, your engine is affected by lack of oxygen in mountainous country. · · ·

Atmospheric pressure at sea level is approximately "151 b per sq. inch. As the motorist rises, the pressure falls approximately ~lb for each thousand feet of altitude, so that air pressure at Katoomba (nearly 4000 ft.) would be only about 13lb per square inch.

If you live at average altitudes there is no ne ed for special tuning for a trip through mountainous COQDtry.

Changin~ gear a little earlier than usual on a grade would be very helpful.

If you live at high altitudes, however, a minor adjustment to the mixture may prove of value.

Tyre pressures, too, are affected at high altitudes. Tyres which are correctly inflated for uie at ~ea level become over-inflatec at high elevation.

A drunk was sitting at a bar ·1Nas trying his best to spear the ·· olive in the bottom of his empty martini gi~ss with a toothpick~ But the olive kept eluding him. Finally, th_e man sitting next to him became so annoyed that ho leaned over, gr$.bbed the t :oothpick, and neatly speared the oltve on the first attempt. "Big deal," said the drunk, very impressed. "It was easy for you a.fter I got him so tirod he couldn 1 t get away".

. Only one car have I ever ·owned, . that is to ·say her- shell or hulk became· legally mine· · after a period· of protected an noncommon business transactions, her soul or motiyating force I never possessed • . Even this . experi~.nce was nearly spared me, for on the ID:Orning t:p.at . J enter.ed t .he showroom to .select my machine, my first ihsttnct · a~ · I stood ~mongst the rows . ofgoggle-ey~d monsters was to flee. · No · doubt I would have done so had .I not .been concerned by a young salesman wearing a smile, I am sure he got from a text-book, and a necktie with more colours than Titian .ever dreamed .of. Because I happened to peer quickly inside a little palc-gr~en sedan the P.alesman went to w.ork (tho text-book again) on the assumption that I had made up my mind t9 have her and·would not on any account be put. off with a substitute. ·

He assured mu that she was a most docile model, that for yoars s~J.G, would :not , show the slighrest sign q.:t; behaving herself and all the time he was hinting at the great· knowloClge a:Q.d wisdom I had displayed by selecting this particul.ar .make of .car. This insidious flattery overbalanced my judgement,- and before .I b,ad recovered .it, I had given my bond to join tho array of new and inexpert owner-drivers who terroriso society at tho weekend&

Disillu3ionment co.me swift.ly, car$ are like dogs, they instinctively recog~1iso .J.:;hcir logical master, Him . who knows their whims arid caprices ·and vvill stand for no nonsense. Tho subterfuges this car adop~ed to show~ her resentment of my ownership were inexhaustible. One of hor favourite pranks was · to refu~o pointblank to be nwakoncdto life by the self-starter. Not every ttmo that I wanted to take her out would sho play this trick on me, (thoro would have been nothing-subtle in that). She would choose . the most inconvenient place, or wait until I was in a tearing hurry, then when, seated more or less confidently ~1: bohind tho steering wheel, my inconveniency vvould be answered by a sickening and heartless whirr. If, after ten minutes of cajoling and cursing, in desperation I rang for the garage man, she woul~ further~mbarrass me by,loaping gleefully to life at ho first touch of his favoured hand.

Such a partner~hip could not last. In spite of the financial loss I was heartily glad when o~c bright Sunday ~orning a young man with an cxpros.sionlcss . face and a partiality for Basic English .tookhor for .his·own, an¢1. drove her away out .of my : life for ever. . .

Mechanic: "What's a cubic foot?" Now Foreman: " I wouldn 1 t know~ butif you've got it~ ftll out this

applic.ation form for woiDkors 1 compensation".
