ready to operate
fire protection for newcastle’s coal export expansion
case studyWormald was engaged to install a comprehensive fire protection solution as
part of the expansion works at newcastle’s coal export terminal.
the terminal, which is located on Kooragang island, is operated by the
newcastle coal infrastructure group (ncig).
the fire protection requirements involved a range of fire protection equipment,
including fire hydrants and fire hose reels, as well as fire detection and
suppression systems located at the wharf, dump station and stockpile areas.
the fire sprinkler and deluge systems installed at the site are particularly
suitable for mining sites and hazardous environments where fires can spread
very quickly or where valuable equipment potentially exposed to a fire needs
to be cooled. Wormald also deployed a comprehensive fire detection and
emergency Warning and intercommunication system (eWis). the eWis is
ideal in situations where mass notification is required and can facilitate the
orderly evacuation of the site in the event of an emergency.
the sappHire® gaseous fire suppression system installed in key asset
locations on site is designed to suppress a fire quickly, ensuring fire damage
and interruptions to operations are kept to a minimum. sappHire™ systems
are specially designed for use in areas that house sensitive equipment.
as part of the contract, Wormald was also responsible for stockpile dust
suppression and dump station ventilation systems on the site.
the Wormald team worked closely with site managers to ensure that all of
the risks specific to this site were understood and that the project will remain
on schedule and within budget. once the site is active, the fire systems will
help protect the export terminal staff from the dangers of fire and will also help
safeguard machinery and operations on the site.
“Wormald was the obvious choice from the tendered companies, for the
installation of the second phase of fire protection systems of the project.
They provide up to date solutions and experienced personnel to install
the systems. They are showing great flexibility and drive to deliver the
system on a brownfield site, which always provides unique challenges for
services contractors.”

SPECIALISED FIRE PROTECTION
ravensworth underground mine is located in the Hunter
valley coalfields of new south Wales, approximately 25 km
northwest of singleton. the mine was developed for longwall
extraction and the coal is a semi soft coking coal which can be
blended with hard coking coal to be used in steel production
or power generation.
Wormald was called in to manage the installation of breathing
apparatus and fast fill stations. the equipment provides miners
with breathable air and the ability to top up self-contained
breathing apparatus cylinders in the event of a gas leak or
other situation where air quality deteriorates. the system is
designed to enable miners to have enough air to escape from
an emergency situation. the breathing apparatus is held in
special moveable storage pods which are located at work
sites within the mine and easily accessible to work groups in
the event of an emergency. they hold up to 21 compressed
air sets with body harnesses. Wormald fast fill systems were
installed in the mine at strategic intervals to enable refilling
during an escape. the fast fill stations contain banks of
compressed air cylinders that operate in a simple manual
cascade system, based on the pressure in the cylinders.
Wormald is highly experienced in mine rescue and life safety
equipment and we have a number of specialists throughout
the organisation.
