Dear Friends, It’s called the law of the spirit. It’s a law Jesus lived by: what you receive freely, you must give freely. It must be given because unlike material things that lessen when used, the Spirit can only grow in life when it’s used for life. This is what’s operative behind today’s Scripture passage about the talents. It’s a story that’s meant to drive home the point that when we work with the Spirit, we grow in the Spirit. When we refuse to cooperate, we stagnate. It’s a hard lesson but that’s the reality of life in the Spirit. In Jesus’ story, the master gave three servants sizable portions of money, called talents. In our day, a talent could conservatively be worth between $1,000 to $30,000. Other estimates put the amount much higher, at nearly $1,000,000! Even to be given 1 talent, let alone 3 and 5 talents, as in the parable, was to be given not just money, but a tremendous amount of trust. Trust isn’t material. It’s a matter of the Spirit. It grows as it’s used. Each received their money to make more money for the master. Two did so, but the third refused. His fear prevented him from acting on the sum given. The two who were trustworthy received greater responsibilities. The untrustworthy one lost everything. But Jesus didn’t use this parable to merely talk about being good stewards of money, nor even the smart use of personal abilities. Remember, the servants were given huge sums. That meant that it was symbolic of the life of God, the Spirit of Christ. It’s what his disciples, what we, have received from him. That life, of its nature, must be given away. Why? Because its of the nature of God to give of himself, without counting the cost. When we’re under God’s influence, we’re challenged to give like him. It’s not for our benefit. It’s to serve the Master’s vision. Now, here’s where the story is about us. As the Eucharist reveals at every Mass, the life of Christ comes to us in and through material substances. That reveals that all matter is in one way or the other symbolic of God’s life, poured out for us. Our problem today is that we’ve become like the lazy servant. We’ve been taught to fear other people, groups, and nations so much that we believe we must hoard what we’ve received. Too often, we don’t see Christ. We see only bread and wine. Too often, we separate matter from the Spirit. When we do that we don’t build up the human community in and through what we’ve received. We, unfortunately, become less interested in justice, forgiveness, and peace. We think only of protecting our interests. We violate a law of the Spirit - what we’ve received freely, we must give freely. The result has been the fragmentation of ourselves, our families, our communities, our nation, and our common home. We’re playing with fire. We must pay attention to what Christ shows us in the Eucharist. It shows us a way beyond the current madness. Love, Fr.Joe

Dear Friends, It’s called the law of the spirit. It’s a law Jesus lived by: what you receive freely, you must give freely. ALTERNATIVE TO ABORTION If you know

someone who is considering having an abortion,

here is a number they might call that could be of

help to them to consider an alternative to this

practice. The number is

1-800-395-HELP (4357).

For the month of November, Pope Francis asks us to pray especially

...that Christians in Africa, bearing witness to the Gospel in word and deed, may promote dialog, peace, and mutual understanding, especially with those of other religions.

BTOR will resume its weekly sessions

starting Thursday, December 7 and continuing in December on the 14th and 21st.

The time is from 1:00-2:00 pm but the location will be in the Cornerstone Conference Room

not in the Faith Center.

REFLECTION Rest in Me, Full of Comfort -Mary Ellen Smajo

Rest in Me, full of comfort; I know you often optimize everything, make the most of every gift, Magis-ize each moment; just for now, stop and savor for savoring’s sake; feel the wind; hear the current’s gurgle; see the stars; fill full of wonder, and hear My heartbeat; I hold you; and the world; and the works; and everyone I’ve ever made; so, full-of-comfort, rest in Me.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time “Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you have been faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities.”

(Matthew 25:21) God expect sus to nurture and develop the gifts He has given us and then generously returns a portion with increase. He doesn’t want us to waste or hoard the gifts He has given us; He expects us to grow our gifts, use them wisely and be generous with them. Unfortunately, many of us are not generous in proportion to all that God has given us.

more truly the People of God. If you have any comments, please feel free to contact any of the following Pastoral Council

Representatives: Donna Stickna, Melissa Rovetto-Ruffner & Marianne Cummins .

We are grateful to the 1,396 people who worshipped with us last weekend and contributed $13,042.00 in the offertory and $2,378.00 through Online Giving offertory,

which along with other fees and donations totaled $20,640.00. Our weekly expenses average out to $20,348.00.

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than

others. Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra

energy months. In the back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you should

happen to hit the jackpot that week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly appreciate

it! You can throw these special envelopes right in the collection with your regular envelope. The energy

envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot them, be

sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks so much. And special thanks to those who have already been doing it

regularly. It makes a difference!!!

Online Giving…

You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday collection online! To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org

There are several ways to access the system: 1. Underneath the scrolling slideshow on the home page, on the bottom right-hand corner, you will see a

light blue icon with a $ sign. Click that icon to go directly to the system.

OR 2. From the homepage, check the left-hand menu options. The second to last menu option says

“envelopes & online giving.” Click that link, and a page with various giving options will appear. Select the

Online Giving option to be taken directly to the system.

Once you are taken to the new site, click on the section that says Create New Account. Next you will see New User Account Registration. Fill out the form and click “submit.” When you are enrolled, you can go into Manage My Account, where you will see My Payment Methods. Here you can choose to have the funds deducted from your checking or bank account (you will need your routing and account numbers on hand). Under Manage My Account, you will also see Give a New Gift. There you will decide when and how much to give. (In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection.) You can select recurring or one time gifts. You also have the option to access all the other special envelopes you would normally find in your envelope packet and which are generally one-time donations. Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for giving online!
