PASTOR’S

CHRISTMAS

MESSAGE

Christmas At Any Moment

Every now and then during the summer some business will announce; Its Christmas in

July! Come on down, meet Santa, enjoy hot chocolate and cookies. Its all a ploy of course

designed to be both humorous and a hook to improve slow summertime sales. But it once got

me thinking as I saw an advertisement of Saint Jude's Hospital for Children.

As many of you know the hospital was started by Danny Thomas and now is guided by his

daughter Marlo. It specializes in treating children with cancer. What is amazing is the fact that

there is no charge for treatment, the hospital is supported by grants and donations. Danny

Thomas was an ardent Catholic Christian who had deep compassion for suffering children.

And then I read an article about the Shriners Hospital for children, the burn unit which is in

Boston. This hospital also treats children suffering from severe burns and never charges their

families for their services. As a kid I remember when the Shriners circus came into town, their

trademark being a small car from which would emerge and amazing number of clowns.

Both Saint Jude's and the many Shriner hospitals have as their foundation Christian faith. But

breaking it down to its basic element it has the person of Jesus as its base. That being so, the

very starting reference point of these hospitals is Christmas, yes Christmas.

We have become so used to Christmas being a one day event surrounded by our traditions that

it is easy to forget that the birth of Jesus marked a radical point in time in which God enters

fully into every moment of human history. As such his birth imprints itself just as easily in July

as it does on December 25th.

Of course I am not recommending that we wish each other Merry Christmas in July. But I do

think that positioning Jesus birth at the end of December, just a week before so many of us

make New Years resolutions might be a good time to ask oneself, who am I now that the Son

of God is born? Not a bad idea don't you think? And here is the best part: that question is just

as valid, just as important in July as it is in December. Christmas at any moment.

Peace,

Pastor Fred

be with you this Advent, Christmas, and throughout the new year.

CONCERT FUND CREATED

The Worship and Music Ministry Team and

the Church Council have approved the

creation of a special Concert Fund. This

fund will consist of voluntary contributions

to be used for the purpose of supporting

concerts and musical events at St. Luke

which benefit the church's mission.

To contribute to this special account, please

mark you contribution "Concert Fund”

Thank you for your support of our

St. Luke Ministries.

Each winter as the year grows older,

We each grow older too.

The chill sets in a little colder;

The verities we knew

Seem shaken and untrue.

When race and class cry out for treason,

When sirens call for war,

They overshout the voice of reason

And scream till we ignore

All we held dear before.

Yet I believe beyond believing,

That life can spring from death:

That growth can flower from our

grieving;

That we can catch our breath

And turn transfixed by faith.

So even as the sun is turning

To journey to the north,

The living flame, in secret burning,

Can kindle on the earth

And bring God's love to birth.

O Child of ecstasy and sorrows,

O Prince of peace and pain,

Brighten today's world by tomorrow's,

Renew our lives again;

Lord Jesus, come and reign!

Save the dates! Alexander Paley makes a rare appearance in Richmond the

last weekend of January, playing two concerts that he

hopes will raise funds for next September's Festival.

On Saturday, January 30, at 7:30, Sasha will play a solo

piano recital, and on Sunday, January 31 at 3 pm -

"Beauties and Beasts" - a program oriented toward

children but not actually "children's music." The program

includes a solo piano version of Tchaikovsky's "Children’s

Album.” With Daniel Stipe (organist from Rossini perfor-

mance) Sasha will play Ravel's "Mother Goose Suite,” and Prokofiev's "Peter and the

Wolf," with Pamela narrating. This is familiar, fun and charming music that everyone

can enjoy. There will be a suggested donation of $20.

On Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24th at 8 p.m., our special music will include

a duet sung by Dana Wiggins and Betty Walker: “Christ Child, Christ Child.” Lenee

Pennington will sing “What Songs Were Sung” by John Jacob Niles, and the descant

on O Come All Ye Faithful will be sung by Marlys Austin. The small women’s choir

will sing “Bring a Torch” and “Rocking Carol.” On December 27th Marlys Austin

will sing “Come unto him” from the Messiah at the morning service.

Christmas is celebrated during the dark days

of winter and calls us to believe that a

brighter light is coming into the world. As I

write this, we are hearing the tragic news of

the Paris terrorist attacks and wondering

why anyone would think this is a religious

imperative. As Christians we assert God is

Love just as true Muslims assert Allah is

Compassionate. Evil has no place in the

birth of Christ.

A CAROLING WE WILL GO!

All kids and “kids at heart” are invited to go Christmas caroling on Sunday, December 20 after the

10:00am Worship. Please stay after the church service for a pizza lunch. After lunch, we will carpool to

Sitter-Barfoot Nursing Home near the VA Hospital.

We will be caroling at 2:00pm. Join us in singing as Barb & Calvin Vonada lead the way with their

brass instruments. Whether you’re 5, 15, 25, 50 or above- you’ll have a great time bringing Christmas

memories to the homebound!

St. Luke Memory Tree

Everyone is invited to prepare a white dove in memory of a loved one. The doves are available in the narthex .

Write your loved one’s name on the dove and place it into the Memory Tree basket in the Narthex. One name per dove please. The white doves will be placed on the tree after the angels are removed.

They will remain until Epiphany , Jan. 6, 2016

The Angel Tree Collection

Please help us spread some Christmas cheer this year!

Each year, St. Luke partners with a local nursing home, to help give their residents gifts to lift their spirits during the Christmas season. This year we are giving to Manor Care on Hilliard Ave. Please help us keep this time honored tradition alive with your love and generosity.

To participate, please pick up an Angel from the Angel Tree located in the Narthex. Each Angel has information about items needed for one resident of Manor Care. Buy and wrap the presents requested. Then return and place your gifts un-derneath the Angel Tree by Sunday, December 13th.

We wish to thank everyone that participates every year and thank you to our new gifters. Please contact Dana Wiggins at 475-0077 if you have any questions or if you lose your angel.

Please pick up your copy today of this year’s Advent Devotional, “Living the Gospel Life”.

Also available this year is an Advent devotional for those 55 and older. The print is more friendly and the message reflects living life to the fullest. Both are now available in the Narthex.

And the angel said unto them, "Fear not! For, behold, I bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be to all

people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this

shall be a sign unto you: Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

Luke 2: 10-12

May the wonder of that first Christmas, the joy of God's abundant blessings,

and the peace of Jesus' presence be with you always.

With our best wishes for a joyful and Christ-centered Christmas and new year,

Dear St. Luke Lutheran Church Member,

Church Staff - Pastor Fred, Pamela McClain (Director of Music), Tammy

Hammond (Church Administrator), Jo Blandford (Christian Education &

way to show our appreciation for the ministry and services they provide to e

ach of us individually and as a Church Family.

Please consider placing a check or envelope marked "Staff Christmas Gift" in the

offering plate over the next three Sunday's so we can present the staff with a well-

deserved Gift from ALL of US. You can designate the gift to one or more of the staff

Flower Dedications

The Ministry of flowers is an important part of

the Sunday Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers

are used to beautify our sanctuary and are a gift

to God and those who attend worship services.

Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of

God”, “In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor

of” a special person, an anniversary, birthday,

birth, baptism or other special event. More than one person may

find a certain date important so flowers may be given in more than

one name on any given Sunday.

If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday

service, arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed directly

from Coleman Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered

to the church. The flowers are yours to take home after the service

that Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or

homebound members. Please sign up on the flower chart located

in the fellowship hall. Please contact the church office or Jean

Stewart if you have any questions. Thank you.

The 2016 Flower Chart is up in the fellowship hall.

If you haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday altar flowers, won’t you consider doing so ?

Please contact Tammy in the office at 804-272-0486 or Jean Stewart at 804-276-2690 if you have any questions or would like more information.

Do you have something

for the next Church Newsletter?

The January 2016 Newsletter Deadline is December 15th. Please call in or e-mail in your submissions with all November meeting dates and notices to Tammy in the church office as soon as possible. We need to add your events to the church calendar as well. Thank you. Tammy Office phone and email address: 804-272-0486 [email protected]

Cole is the son of Jessica and Troy Webber

and baby brother to Logan. Although Cole arrived a bit early, he is doing fine and so is Jess.

Would you like to be part of our Worship Service?

Sunday Worship services are a very important part of our church life here at St. Luke. Every Sunday, our church members participate in our worship service as Acolytes, Assisting Ministers, Crucifers and Ushers. We also have Altar Guild members who set up for Sunday services and communion, Altar Bread Bakers, Chancel Choir members, Bell Choir members, Musicians and many other Committee Members who serve the Lord and St. Luke by providing their time, talents and energy. We are so thankful to have these folks assist us every week but we can always use more help.

If you are interested in serving and would like more information about these or other opportunities to be a part of our Worship and Music Ministry, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Pastor Fred Marcoux, Tim Hesson or Vince Reedinger for more information about Worship. Please contact our Director of Music, Pamela McClain for information about Music.

MEMORIAL GARDEN FENCE FUND

The Interiors Committee, which administers the Memorial Garden, and the Church Council have approved the

establishment of a Special Fund in order to install a privacy fence behind the Memorial Garden running parallel to

Chippenham Parkway and continuing behind the stone memorial.

After many years of work and labor by a dedicated few, the last step is to install

this fence in order to cut back on the highway noise, protect plantings from deer

and to provide a more serene environment when you visit the garden. We need to

raise $6515 in order to contract for this work. The entire amount must be funded

before we can proceed.

We thank you for your support and your contributions!

Please make checks payable to St. Luke Lutheran Church

and put “Memorial Garden Fence” in the memo line.

If you have not visited the Memorial Garden lately, please take the time to enjoy the beauty to be found there.
