PASTOR’S LETTER

The Mysteries of the Rosary Chapter 53: The Third Luminous Mystery—The Proclama!on of the Kingdom of God and Call to Conversion, con!nued…

Con!nuing our reflec!on on Jesus’ parable about the sower and the seeds, let’s look

at the third thing he says can happen to seeds: “Other seeds fell upon thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them…this is he who hears the word, but the anxie!es of the world and the decei"ulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfrui"ul.” (Ma%hew 13:7, 22)

There is always something we can worry about. Think of Martha, who was so preoccupied with being a good hostess to Jesus that he gently admonished her for not taking !me to listen to him like her sister Mary was doing. Or the worry of Pon!us Pilate, who cared too much about how the Emperor might react to the accusa!ons against him by some of the Jewish leaders, who told him that if he released Jesus he was not Caesar’s friend. It can be temp!ng to worry about what might go wrong, what people might think about us, how our plans might fall through, that we might lose someone we are fond of, and a million other things. If we spend too much !me thinking “Oh no. What if…” our mental and emo!onal resources can be distracted from knowing and serving the Lord.

Another transla!on of the Greek word translated above as “anxiety,” merimna, is “cares.” This means that just being taken up with a lot of busyness—even if we are not in a state of anxiety about it—can severely limit our response to what God is calling us to do, namely respond to the proclama!on of the Kingdom of God and call to conversion, and then in turn to make that proclama!on and call to others.

What about the phrase “the decei'ulness of riches”? Riches are decei'ul when we are tempted to think that they can make us happy. Only God can make us happy—not a bigger house, more money in the bank, or anything else we can purchase or own.

So, what can we do about tempta!ons to anxiety? One thing that’s helped me over the years is repea!ng to myself the words of Saint Paul to the Chris!ans in Philippi: “Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7) Another verse that helps me to worry less are some other words of Saint Paul: “We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

What can we do to counter tempta!ons to accumulate too much money or too many things? Well, we can think about people who could use some of what we have more than we do, and then try to help them. We can also read about some of the very numerous saints who lived very simple lifestyles and had few possessions who were men and women of great joy, peace and apostolic frui'ulness. These include Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Claire of Assisi, Saint John Paul II and Saint Teresa of Calcu%a. In fact, my guess is that most saints have lived this way. Let’s ask them to pray for us, that like them we ourselves may respond fully to the proclama!on of the Kingdom of God and God’s call to conversion.

Your fellow pilgrim through the Rosary, Father Rudolph

Mr. Owen & Mrs. Linda Schleisman

If you are feeling a desire to grow closer to our Lord and God, then consider spending a scheduled hour with Jesus every week in our Adora!on Chapel. There is an urgent need for new Adorers, Prayer Partners, and subs for us to reinstate Perpetual Adora!on the end of March. Especially needed are people willing to commit to our open

Please stop by to have your ques!ons answered, discern hours in need, and schedule your very own grace-filled hour to spend !me with the One who loves you most. You can also call Be%y Kreuter at 763-537-1399 (h); 763-354-4796 (c). Time with the Lord is precious. Please help if you can.

“I look forward to my Adora!on !me. For sixty minutes I sit face to face with my best friend, Jesus, in the Most Blessed Sacrament. Despite challenging and ques!onable life events, I give thanks for all Jesus has done for me, my family, and friends. During these days of turmoil around the world, I pray for peace—peace in our hearts, as well as for our country and our world. I pray for our beloved priests, for without them there would be a huge void. Over the past couple of years, I have found peace and joy during Adora!on, which has helped me in unexpected ways.” An Adorer’s Tes!mony

DEAR GOD LETTERS

Every Monday during Lent, our St. Raphael Catholic School students spend 10 minutes wri!ng le%ers to God. Each week is a different theme. The first week of Lent, the students wrote le%ers to God telling Him what they are thankful for. The second week of Lent, the students wrote le%ers that will be sent, along with a small monetary dona!on, to Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Cookeville, TN - to bring hope and to help those who lost so much in the sudden tornado. The song O God Beyond All Praising is played over the PA system in the school following the le%er wri!ng.

SAINT OF THE DAY - SAINT CLEMENT MARY HOFBAUER Johannes Ho=auer was born in 1751 in Tasswitz, Moravia. He was the ninth of twelve children. His father died when he was six. As a child he wanted to become a priest, but the family couldn’t afford to pay for his educa!on, so he was appren!ced to a baker when he was fi+een. Later he went to work at a monastery at Bruck. The self-sacrifice Johannes showed during a !me of famine won him the favor of the abbot, who allowed him to a%end the abbey school. A+er the abbot’s death, he became a hermit, but the Emperor issued a law prohibi!ng people from following that voca!on, so he moved to Vienna and returned to baking. A+er a few months, Johannes realized that his real voca!on was to be a missionary. He had a providen!al mee!ng with a couple of wealthy women for whom he called a carriage when they were stranded at church a+er Mass due to a rainstorm. In gra!tude they paid for the seminary studies of not only Johannes, but also his friend Thaddeus Hübl. The two went on pilgrimage to Rome, were ordained in 1785 and joined the Redemptorists. Johannes took the name Clement Mary in religion. The two friends were sent on a mission to Lithuania, joined along the way by an old friend of Clement Mary named Peter Kunzmann, who joined them as a lay novice, taking the name Brother Emmanuel. On their way to Lithuania, the papal nuncio in Warsaw convinced them to stay there—with the permission of their Superior—to minister to the several thousand German-speaking Catholics in Warsaw who had been without pastors since the suppression of the Jesuits. The three Redemptorists began their ministry in such poverty that they didn’t even have beds. The priests slept on a table and Brother Emmanuel slept on a chair. They had to borrow pots and pans for their cooking. They had a very ac!ve and frui'ul ministry, preaching five homilies every day; three in Polish and two in German. Both Protestants and Jews were converted to the Catholic faith. Clement Mary opened an orphanage, begging alms to support the children. On one of his begging expedi!ons, a man playing cards in a bar spit in his face. Clement Mary said, “That was for me. Now please let me have something for my poor children.” The man became one of his regular penitents. Clement Mary also started a school for boys, a number of confraterni!es, and sent out missionaries to Lithuania, Germany, Switzerland and other parts of Poland. In 1808 the government decided to expel the Redemptorists from Poland. Clement Mary and his companions were taken to the fortress of Cüstrin on the banks of the Oder River. Such was their influence on their fellow-prisoners and on the people who used to crowd around the prison to listen to the Redemptorists sing hymns that the authori!es decided to send them away. Clement Mary went back to Vienna, where he spent the last twelve years of his life as a chaplain to a convent of Ursuline nuns as well as a popular confessor to people from many walks of life. He also had a great devo!on to the sick and was said to have ministered to two thousand people on their deathbeds. A+er Clement Mary died on March 15, 1819, all of Vienna crowded the streets to honor him as his body was being taken to the Cathedral. Saint Clement Mary Ho=auer, pray for us!
