Dear Friends
From June 20-25 delegates from throughout the denomination
gathered in Pella Iowa for the meeting of the General Synod of the
Reformed Church in America Among the many acts of business
was a celebration of the 10-year goal known as Our Call which
ended in 2013
The delegates adopted a new strategic goal to bring us into the next
phase of our ministry together as workers in Christrsquos church This
goal was designed for the denomination but also brings focus to
individual churches and members in the work we do I lift up a
prayer of thanksgiving for the work done on the year long process
that brings us to this goal and share it with you for your prayer and
consideration in your work and in your life

Transformed and Transforming
Radically Following Christ in Mission Together
Being led by the Holy Spirit serving with each other embracing
our diverse world and striving for a multicultural future freed from
racism and working with all the partners that God provides as we
move toward a fifth century of mission and ministry the Reformed
Church in America commits to focus its efforts for the next fifteen
years on the following three interconnected strategic priorities
1) Cultivating Transformation in Christ (John 15 Deut 64-9 1
Cor 36-8 Rom 121-2 2 Cor 318 Matt 2234-40 Luke 640 Acts
242-47 2 Cor 517-18 Matt 2818-20 Eph 416 Gal 328)
Developing passionate disciples filled the Holy Spirit and
the truth of the Word who effectively make followers of
Jesus who live and love like him
Deepening our spiritual journey in ways that are biblical
and Reformed
Loving and embracing all people
Opening ourselves humbly to deep change under the
guidance of the Holy Spirit
Increasing our personal and corporate devotion to God
emphasizing prayer and worship
Building intentional intergenerational discipling
relationships
Engaging conflict in healthy and redemptive ways
2) Equipping Emerging Leaders of Today and Tomorrow (Deut 64-9 Luke 948 Eph 411-12 2 Tim 22)
Increasing the awareness that God is calling youth and
young adults to become leaders
Developing youth intentionally for missional
congregational and pastoral leadership
Mobilizing emerging leaders for service in the church and
world
Preparing leaders of all ages for fruitful ministry in diverse
environments
Cultivating diverse and healthy leaders within the total
membership of the body of Christ so that churches can
thrive
3) Engaging in Christrsquos Kingdom Mission (Luke 418-19 Acts
18 Luke 1025-37 Matt 2818-20 Matt 1414 Micah 68 Matt
1344 Matt 937 Acts 242-47 Rev 79-12 Isa 611-4)
Contextualizing ministry and church in new and expanded
ways
Prioritizing youth involvement in missional ministry
Serving as agents of renewal through putting our faith in
action
Promoting justice compassion and reconciliation
Expanding mission that is both local and global with equal
passion and commitment
Equipping existing churches to move outward in ministry
Embracing our mission to the world and sharing the good
news of the gospel with everyone
Multiplying missional communities and new churches that
put the love of Christ into action

The Pastor
After a few of the usual Sunday evening hymns the churchs
pastor slowly stood up walked over to the pulpit and before he
gave his sermon for the evening he briefly introduced a guest
minister who was in the service that evening
In the introduction the pastor told the congregation that the guest
minister was one of his dearest childhood friends and that he
wanted him to have a few moments to greet the church and share
whatever he felt would be appropriate for the service With that
an elderly man stepped up to the pulpit and began to speak
ldquoA father his son and a friend of his son were sailing off the
pacific coastrdquo he began ldquoWhen a fast approaching storm blocked
any attempt to get back to the shore The waves were so high that
even though the father was an experienced sailor he could not
keep the boat upright and the three were swept into the ocean as
the boat capsizedrdquo
The old man hesitated for a moment making eye contact with two
teenagers who were for the first time since the service began
looking somewhat interested in his story
The aged minister continued with his story ldquoGrabbing a rescue
line the father had to make the most excruciating decision of his
life to which boy would he throw the other end of the life line He
only had seconds to make the decision The father knew that his
son was a Christian and he also knew that his sons friend was
not
The agony of his decision could not be matched by the torrent of
waves As the father yelled out I love you son he threw out the
life line to his sons friend
By the time the father had pulled the friend back to the capsized
boat his son had disappeared beneath the raging swells into the
black of night His body was never recoveredrdquo
By this time the two teenagers were sitting up straight in the pew
anxiously waiting for the next words to come out of the old
ministers mouth
ldquothe fatherrdquo he continued ldquoknew his son would step into eternity
with Jesus and he could not bear the thought of his sons friend
stepping into an eternity without Jesus Therefore he sacrificed
his son to save the sons friendrdquo
ldquoHow great is the love of god that he should do the same for us
Our heavenly father sacrificed his only begotten son that we could
be saved I urge you to accept his offer to rescue you and take a
hold of the life line he is throwing out to you in this servicerdquo
With that the old man turned and sat back down in his chair as
silence filled the room
The pastor again walked slowly to the pulpit and delivered a brief
sermon with an invitation at the end However no one responded
to the appeal
Within minutes after the service ended the two teenagers were at
the old mans side
ldquoThat was a nice storyrdquo politely stated one of them ldquobut I dont
think it was very realistic for a father to give up his only sons life
in hopes that the other boy would become a Christianrdquo
ldquoWell youve got a point thererdquo the old man replied glancing
down at his worn bible A big smile broadened his narrow face
He once again looked up at the boys and said ldquoit sure isnt very
realistic is it But Im standing here today to tell you that story
gives me a glimpse of what it must have been like for God to give
up his son for merdquo
ldquoYou seeI was that father and your pastor is my sons friendrdquo
Babies
In a mothers womb were two babies One asked the other
Do you believe in life after delivery The other replied why of
course There has to be something after delivery Maybe we are
here to prepare ourselves for what we will be later
Nonsense says the other There is no life after delivery
What would that life be I dont know but there will be more
light than here Maybe we will walk with our legs and eat from our
mouths The other says This is absurd Walking is impossible
And eat with our mouths Ridiculous The umbilical cord
supplies nutrition Life after delivery is to be excluded The
umbilical cord is too short I think there is something and maybe
its different than it is here the other replies No one has ever
come back from there Delivery is the end of life and in the after-
delivery it is nothing but darkness and anxiety and it takes us
nowhere
Well I dont know says the other but certainly we will
see mother and she will take care of us Mother You believe
in mother Where is she now She is all around us It is in her
that we live Without her there would not be this world I dont
see her so its only logical that she doesnt exist To which the
other replied sometimes when youre in silence you can hear her
you can perceive her I believe there is a reality after delivery and
we are here to prepare ourselves for that reality

and for the opportunity to be outside and enjoy Your creation
Thank You for the increased time I have to be with my friends and
family
and for the more casual pace of the summer season
Draw me closer to You this summer
Teach me how I can pray
no matter where I am or what I am doing
Warm my soul with the awareness of Your presence
and light my path with Your Word and Counsel
As I enjoy Your creation create in me
a pure heart and a hunger and a thirst for You
Amen

The Pastor
After a few of the usual Sunday evening hymns the churchs

gave his sermon for the evening he briefly introduced a guest
