Worship Schedule at Christ Church

The vision of Christ Episcopal Church is to be recognized as a joyful, spirit-filled community of

apostles reaching out and transforming lives for Christ.

March 28 2007 Vol. XVIII No. 7

From the Rector…

Last week my family and I went on a short vacation to relax and to do a little fly fishing for trout. There was one aspect of our trip that was a little surprising and completely unanticipated. The stream where we were scheduled to fish was small and had a fair amount of fishing pressure from everyone else on their spring breaks. So, in order to fish the most desirable portions of the river, I had to be by the streamside a little before daylight - so much for sleeping in and relaxing.

To make matters worse, our cabin was deep in the woods, several miles away from any main road. That first morning I rose early, well before sun-rise, and began driving back toward the stream where I would meet my guide for the morning. I drove away from our cabin in the dark and fog and quickly became aware that the turns which looked so simple the prior afternoon in the sunshine were completely unrecognizable in the dark-ness. I made several wrong turns, taking me further into the forest, des-perate to see something that looked familiar. After turning around several times, I finally saw through the dense morning fog the illuminated white steeple of a church that was next to the main highway leading to the stream. It was such a relief to see the church because I knew I was on my way.

Our Lenten journey in preparation for our Easter celebration is much the same as my morning drive down dark and foggy country back roads.

For most our lives, we may feel we may actually be lost or be on the right road, but we are simply driving in the wrong direction. When we find ourselves lost, it is necessary to turn around (in theological terms, repent) and start over. Lent is the time to evaluate where we are in our lives - in our relationship with Christ and, when necessary, repent and reorient ourselves. Like that illuminated steeple in the foggy darkness, the risen Christ stands as a beacon of hope and offers us the direction we need to move closer to where we need, and want, to be.

Everyone of us will at some point in our lives be in position to care for someone else in our family or a friend with health needs. For the many members of our church family who are in the midst of this right now, you are at a greater risk than the average person to have health issues without doing something to reduce the stress that goes with being a care giver. Save your sanity and your health, here are 10 Stress Busters.

• Get support. There is a support group at Christ Church every Thursday. The group meets from 12 to 1 p.m. in Room 212 and is led by Jeanne Miller, LSW.

• Don’t neglect your own health. You may let your own health issues slide because your family member’s needs seem so urgent. Resist the temptation. Nagging back pain can worsen, and a simple cold can be-come pneumonia. If you’re incapacitated by illness, you won’t be any help to anyone.

• Get adequate sleep. It’s hard to keep stress under control when you’re exhausted. Do your best to get a good night’s sleep.

• Pet a cat or dog. A study conducted in 2000 suggested that care partners who adopted a dog had an im-provement in blood pressure under stressful situations, compared with those who did not get a dog. If you’re not ready to take on the responsibility of a new pet, offer to dog or cat sit for a friend.

• Ditch the guilt. Just as a flight attendant tells you to put on your own oxygen mask before attending to a child, you need to take care of your own needs so you have something left to give your family member. If you’re mentally and physically on edge, you can’t help those around you. Take a quick daily break. Make a cup of tea, put a warm towel on your face and take a breather. These “mini-breaks” can help restore your patience and your sanity.

• Exercise. A quick walk, jog, or trip to the gym can do wonders to cut your stress, and can help you avoid health problems of your own.

• Keep an eye out for depression. Anywhere from 30 to 60 percent of care partners report symptoms of depression. If you find you’re irritable, have difficulty sleeping, or have a persistent feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or hopelessness, you may be depressed. Ask your doctor for help.

• Cut corners and delegate as often as possible. Seek out volunteers through your local church or charities who can help out around the house or the yard. Have medication delivered by mail to save trips to the pharmacy, and look into low-cost transportation for seniors, which is available in many communities. Find out if your loved one is eligible for personal care attendant hours.

• Have a social life. Now is not the time to let friends fall by the wayside. Although care partners can feel as if it’s consuming every free moment you have, take the time to call or see friends.

May you know God is with you even in the midst of this trial. Blessings and Peace, Robin +

Easter Resurrection Cookies

1 c. whole pecans Zipper baggie 1 tsp. vinegar Wooden spoon 3 egg whites Tape Pinch of salt Bible 1 c. sugar

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Place pecans in zipper baggie and let children beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested, He was beaten by the Roman soldiers. Read John 19:1-3 Let each child smell the vinegar. Put 1 tsp. Vinegar into mixing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross, He was given vinegar to drink. Read John 19:28-30 Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life. Read John 10:10-11 Sprinkle a little salt into each child’s hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus’ followers, and the bitterness of our own sin. Read Luke 23:27 So far the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add 1 c. sugar. Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know and belong to Him. Read Psalms 34:8, John 3:16 Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12-15 minutes until stiff peaks form. Explain that the color white represents the purity in God’s eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read Isaiah 1:18, John 3:1-3 Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoons onto wax paper-covered cookie sheet. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus’ body was laid. Read Matthew 27:57-60 Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door, and turn off the oven. Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door. Explain that Jesus’ tomb was sealed. Read Matthew 27:65-66 Go to bed! Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus’ followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read John 16:20-22 On Resurrection morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first Resurrection day, Jesus’ followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Read Matthew 28:1-9

Youth Ministry

Mission to Mississippi

On March 10, eleven youth and four adults went to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi to con-tinue relief work from Hurricane Katrina. Our host, Christ Episcopal Church, Bay St. Louis sits facing the open waters of the Gulf. The church and its 6 other buildings were completely swept away by the 30 ft. storm surge leaving only their damaged bell tower. In fact, the bell tower was the only structure left standing by the storm along the entire coast east of New Orleans to downtown Bay St. Louis. However, Christ Church, Bay St. Louis has never missed a Sunday service. In the area, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of FEMA trailers still being occupied and just as many homes and businesses awaiting destruction or rebuilding. However, eve-ryone we met and worked with delivered the same message: HOPE.

Above, Christ Episcopal Church and it’s bell tower in Bay St. Louis, MS. The Quonset hut on the right currently serves as the church building.

Emily (above) and Ashley (below) pull the canvas across the frame of a new Quonset hut which will be used as sleeping quarters for future mission groups.

At right, the kids take a break by sit-ting on the mound of gravel used to improve the church grounds. They also hauled TONS of limestone rock.

Above, the group poses in New Orleans. On the way home, we made a special trip to Café du Monde for a breakfast of beignets!

Cool temperatures and sunny skies made our work easier.

Jay and Trevor stop their yard work to pose with property owner, Mrs. Young who has lived in her FEMA trailer for almost 2 years.

Above, R&R was spent on the beach located just across the street from the church.
