Every New Year we aspire to something bigger and better for the coming year. I think God instilled in our make-up a desire for increase, movement and progress. From the very beginning of time, God created days and nights, weeks, months and years. He created the sun, moon and stars so we would be able to mark the passage of time. Our existence could be unbearable if we were not able to mark time. We would be like a child in the back seat asking, “are we there yet?” It really doesn’t matter if you refer to, “many moons ago”, or “last year”. The progression of time and the marking of time helps us to put the past behind us and anticipate the future. Standing at the beginning of 2018 is a time of hope and expectation. It is the beginning of a new mark in time. New opportunity and new possibilities await us. The focus for 2018 is Thrive. We will be looking at three areas in which we hope to thrive. The first is our spiritual life. There are two inseparable parts to the equation, our relationship to ourselves and our relationship to God. We want to Thrive with God. Thrive = grow, progress, flourish. To thrive is to do more than just survive. The difficulty with thriving is that there is always resistance, something holding us back, blocking our way, keeping us from the full life Jesus promised. Every new movement experiences a shadow that darkens the path ahead. We may not see it at the start, it may be just a feeling, or it may appear from the onset. But there are giants that will stand in our way. The shadow of intimidation and years of battling the fear of failure have caused us to shrink back from the vision of our future. While standing at the starting line of a new year we may be cowering at what lies between us and glory. I helped coach a high school track team. A neighboring local school had a girl that was on her way to state. She was just killing her opponents. The two-mile run often had both the women and the men running together. They get rather spread out over that distance and it’s not hard to have two races going at the same time. It's the last race of the meet and no one wants to hang around an extra 10-15 minuets to run consecutive 2-mile runs. Even though our male 2-milers would not be competing against her, they would be on the track at the same time. One fellow didn’t expect to beat her, and he said, “If she is going to lap me, I’m stepping off the track.” He preferred to disqualify himself, than to be lapped by a girl. Unfortunately, we are prone to disqualifying ourselves while we are at the starting line. We know there is a giant just around the corner waiting to dash our hopes and dreams for the year. So, we tend to just settle for less! The giant’s name may be: fear, discouragement, worry, anger, or loneliness. The only way we can move past the giant is to face our giant and realize that our God is BIGGER than any giant in our lives. Like David we will need to stand up and call Goliath out. God has promised us two things: He will be with us and He will empower us. We will move from survive to THRIVE! Blessings, Rev. Ric Harvel

January 2018 Prayer List

When we join the United Methodist Church, we take a vow that we will be, loyal to the United Methodist Church and uphold it by Our Prayers, Our Presence, Our Gifts, Our

Service and by Our Witness. Scriptures call us to celebrate with those who celebrate and to grieve with those who

grieve. We grow in connection with one another as we know the praises and concerns of the individual churches and

respond in a manner of praise and/or prayer. Please feel free to share your news that we may share especially the prayer

concerns to the faith community.

In the coming months, Reaching New People has decided to honor special groups of people for their

service to our community.

For the first month, on Sunday, January 28th, at the 9:30 and 11:00am services

we’ll begin by honoring our rescue workers

(firefighters, police, rescue teams).

They give of their time, their effort, their care, their own security and comfort to make sure we are safe.

Please, “reach out” to invite one of your friends and neighbors who serves our community

in this capacity to church the last Sunday of January!

Let’s tell them, “Thank you!” for the watchful care they give to our Andover community!

Hypothermia and Frostbite

How are you each tolerating this bitter cold streak that we are having to endure in Northeast Ohio?

It’s bone-chilling and very often more confining that we are accustomed to! But it is also a good time

to brush up on winter safety. Here are some tips for staying safe and healthy throughout the season.

First of all, know what to watch for! Signs of hypothermia include: uncontrollable shivering, lack of coordination,

mental confusion, slurred speech, slowed reactions, apparent exhaustion and sleepiness.

Signs of frostbite are found in extremities such as fingers, toes, tips of nose or ear lobes, and include the following:

white or pale splotches on skin and loss of feeling to the affected area.

What would you do if you or a family member has hypothermia or frostbite? Get the person into dry clothing and

under blankets with a warm water bottle, heating pad or other heat source and keep them still. Immerse frostbitten

areas in tepid, but not hot, water for 15-30 minutes. Give the person warm drinks. Seek medical help immediately if

symptoms worsen. Do not give the person alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers or pain relievers. Do not massage, rub

or jostle the person. Do not apply salves or ointments to affected areas.

We are planning a winter seminar for the public on Winter Safety to be led by Alicen Limestoll. Please watch the

bulletin and newspaper for date and time!

“You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you.” Isaiah 26:3 NIV

Our pastors spoke about starting the New Year with a “clean slate”, letting go of the past, forgiving and moving on!

What pain or baggage is holding you hostage? Many cultures promote forgiveness as a way to begin the New Year.

Research shows that forgiving others makes you healthier by lowering blood pressure, stress, hostility, anxiety, and

chronic pain. “Letting go” also gives you a sense of well-being that translates into healthier relationships and less

illness.

It is not easy but with God’s help you can make the choice to take control and keep the hurt from ruling your

emotions or actions. Forgiveness takes time. Give it your energy and by next Christmas see what changes have been

made in your life!!

Happy New Year everyone!
