THE MOST HOLY TRINITY JUNE 7, 2020
IN OUR PARISH
PARISH PROJECTS
As good stewards of your generosity, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide you regular updates on St. Matthew campus projects, improvements, and on-going initiatives.
All our public Masses are back with streaming offered 7-days a week. Many people have stepped up to help us sanitize between Masses and we have two volunteers helping to facilitate our streaming. Thank you for your help!
The Facilities Team is now focused on school projects, most of which are being accomplished internally and with volunteers. We are organizing and consolidating storage closets, enhancing janitorial areas, adding four tutoring rooms, replacing another outside door, refurbishing classroom light fixtures that were converted to LEDs, power washing and painting fences, and we have a massive amount of tree and bush trimming and removal. Anyone wishing to volunteer a few hours, we could use your help.
Last week we also applied for several Catholic Foundation Grants including; security enhancements, streaming equipment (much of our current equipment is borrowed) and ceiling repairs in the school.
We appreciate this opportunity to provide updates on what we are doing on campus. Please don’t hesitate to text or email suggestions on how we can better serve you in these difficult times. Contact George Harvey at [email protected] or text 330-904-1083. Stay healthy and God Bless.

KNIGHT OF THE MONTH – Congratulations to Dave Eldridge, Knight of the Month for June!
KNIGHT FAMILY OF THE MONTH – Congratulations to Tom & Kristin Paulus, Knight Family of the month for June!
“If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32Hello St. Matthew family! My name is Maggie Smith and I’m the Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry. I just graduated from Ohio Dominican University with a double major in English and Theology. While I was in school, a frequent question I got about my Theology major was “oh…what are you going to do with that?” It’s true. Theology doesn’t seem practical to many people anymore. In fact, at my Catholic college I was the only student in my graduating class to receive a Theology degree. So why did I study Theology? Why did I bother with it? I could have studied biology (which I actually love), I could have studied education (which I also love), but instead I chose Theology.I can’t explain my decision to study Theology other than by offering a piece of my personal testimony. In high school I experienced Truth, and the Truth set me free. It’s hard to love God if you don’t understand Him. It’s hard to appreciate God’s power, vastness, and might without experiencing the heights and depths of our faith. In a high school religion class (shout out to Bishop Hartley!) we were asked to analyze an article of St. Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologica. I don’t think many of my classmates appreciated the assignment, but I was excited to read it. When I got to the end of the article that we were assigned, and I saw how Aquinas laid out the Truth with such clarity and accuracy, something moved inside my heart, and I started to cry. “Truth is real,” I thought to myself. “There are answers to my questions. God cares. God knows.” I was liberated by this experience.Truth. It is real, and it has a name, Jesus. “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” says Jesus. Jesus sets us free. He is for us, not against us. There is so much more to life than what we dare to believe. So what will I do with my Theology degree? I will communicate Truth to others, specifically the young people of our parish, who I believe can change the world. What a cliché! But I believe it. Please know that. I believe the young people of our parish can change the world.I love you all very much, St. Matthew family. Please pray for me and the youth and young adults of our parish. God bless you!Maggie Smith
STEWARDSHIP: HOW CAN WE HELP YOU? As good stewards of our Parish, we are called to care for and look after St. Matthew Parish and its parishioners. We want to know how our parishioners are doing in this time of struggle and fear. How can we help you? How can we pray for you? Please remember to check on your neighbors, check on your family, and check on those who are at risk, while practicing social distancing. If you have specific needs or prayers, please email Brooke Warren at [email protected] and she will make sure to add you to the prayer list or find a way to get your needs met. We know there are a lot of people struggling financially right now and we want to help, but to do that we need the support of our parishioners who are still able to donate. If you usually give via offertory envelopes, please consider using online giving during our time away from the church. Visit www.stmatthew.net/giving for more information. You can also call the parish and leave a message; someone will call you back with more information. Thank you!
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY COVID-19 We know that many parishioners are struggling financially because of the economic impact of COVID-19, so we are happy to share that our parish has received an Emergency Response Grant from The Catholic Foundation to assist our parishioners during the COVID-19 outbreak. This fund is only available to St. Matthew parishioners. Guidelines given by the Catholic Foundation, as well as the discretion of our Pastor, will be used when determining eligibility and amount awarded. All applications are kept in strict confidence and are considered on the basis of need and eligibility. For more information and to apply, please go to our website, stmatthew.net, and click "COVID-19 Financial Assistance."
WE WELCOME INTO OUR FAMILY OF FAITH – the following child who was baptized on Sunday, May 24: Ryan Patrick Miller.
WE PRAY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DIED – Ghilwate Fessehaye, father of Michael Fessehaye.
ST. MATTHEW CHURCH GAHANNA, OHIO
STATEMENT FROM BISHOP BRENNAN ON DEATH OF GEORGE FLOYDMay 29, 2020
The events surrounding the death of Mr. George Floyd in Minneapolis are deeply troubling for all peo-ple, causing unrest and anger. The feelings surrounding this situation and others like it are justified, and there are so many ways those feelings and thoughts can and should be voiced. We are blessed to live in a nation that affords us the right to express ourselves, but the violent protests that have occurred in Columbus and elsewhere only bring additional harm to innocent persons and to business owners, so many of whom have suffered during the coronavirus pandemic. They represent a par-ticipation in the toxic cloud of stereotypical judgement which such protests rightly seek to condemn. Mr. Floyd’s death calls for an honest self-examination on the part of all of us that seeks to identify sinful attitudes and judgments that must be remedied. Laws and policies must do more to protect the fundamental rights of those at risk. I recognize, also, that most in our law enforcement community are very good people who find these situations abhorrent and have a strong reaction against what has happened. They too share in the call for investigation and action to prevent these situations from occurring again. I thank them for their service and willingness to risk their wellbeing to help assure the common good. As people of faith in God, we must be totally committed to eradicating racism and encouraging all our neighbors to peace toward people of every race, creed, and color. The path of peace will lead us toward bringing an end to everything that is contradictory to the call to love God and neighbor. I invite all in our community here in Central Ohio to join together in this effort to forge a path built with the pavers of justice and reverence for every human life toward a harmony that allows us to enjoy a peaceful future for our children and for all ages to come.
GEORGE FLOYD AND THE SIN OF RACISM: POPE FRANCIS' MESSAGEJune 3, 2020
Dear brothers and sisters in the United States, I have witnessed with great concern the disturbing social unrest in your nation in these past days, following the tragic death of Mr. George Floyd.
My friends, we cannot tolerate or turn a blind eye to racism and exclusion in any form and yet claim to defend the sacredness of every human life. At the same time, we have to recognize that “the violence of recent nights is self-destructive and self-defeating. Nothing is gained by violence and so much is lost.”
Today I join the Church in Saint Paul and Minneapolis, and in the entire United States, in praying for the repose of the soul of George Floyd and of all those others who have lost their lives as a result of the sin of racism. Let us pray for the consolation of their grieving families and friends and let us im-plore the national reconciliation and peace for which we yearn. May Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of America, intercede for all those who work for peace and justice in your land and throughout the world.
May God bless all of you and your families.
