Heidelberg Catechism Q. 45

Q. How does Christ’s resurrection benefit us?A. First, by his resurrection he has overcome death, so that he might make us share in the righteousness he obtained for us by his death. Second, by his power we too are already raised to a new life. Third, Christ’s resurrection is a sure pledge to us of our blessed resurrection.

John 6:35-40Jesus answered, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. But as I stated, you have seen me and still you do not believe. Everyone the Father gives me will come to me, and the one who comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For it is my Father’s will that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Westminster Shorter Catechism, Q. 37 & 38

Q. 37. What benefits do believers receive from Christ at death?A. The souls of believers are at their death made perfect in holiness, and do immediately pass into glory; and their bodies, being still united to Christ, do rest in their graves till the resurrection.

Q. 38. What benefits do believers receive from Christ at the resurrection?A. At the resurrection, believers being raised up in glory, shall be openly acknowledged and acquitted in the day of judgment, and made perfectly blessed in the full enjoying of God, to all eternity.

You are our Lord; apart from you we have no good thing.

You alone are our portion and our cup; you make our lot secure.

We keep our eyes always on the Lord. With him on our side, we will not be shaken.

You make known to us the path of life;

You will fill us with joy in your presence,

With eternal pleasures at your right hand.

The Lord be with you.

And with your spirit.

Let us worship God!

The Meditation—Ten Thousand Times Ten Thousand ........... H. Alford, W. L. FleuryTen thousand times ten thousand in sparkling raiment bright,The armies of the ransomed saints throng up the steps of light:’Tis finished, all is finished, their fight with death and sin:Fling open wide the golden gates, and let the victors in.

What rush of alleluias fill all the earth and sky! What ringing of a thousand harps tells us the triumph’s nigh!O day, for which creation and all its tribes were made;O joy, for all its former woes a thousand-fold repaid!

O then what raptured greetings on Canaan’s happy shore; What knitting severed friendships up where partings are no more! Then eyes with joy shall sparkle, that brimmed with tears of late;Orphans no longer fatherless, nor widows desolate.

Bring near your great salvation, O Lamb for sinners slain;Fill up the roll of your elect, then take your pow’r and reign:Appear, Desire of nations, your exiles long for home;Show in the heav’ns your promised sign; O Prince and Savior, come.Text: H. Alford | Tune: W.L. Fleury

The Assurance of Pardoning Grace ................................................... Ephesians 2:4-7But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

†The Confession of Faith ............................................................... The Apostles’ Creed

Although it was not written by the apostles, the Apostles’ Creed is a concise summary of their teachings. It originated as a baptismal confession, probably in the second century, and developed into its present form by the sixth or seventh century.

*suffered separation from God

**universal

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell.* The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic** church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

§The Personal Confession of Sin

§The Corporate Confession of SinI, a poor sinner, acknowledge before you, my God and Creator, that I have terribly and in many ways sinned against you, not only outwardly, but much more with inward blindness, unbelief, doubts, despondency, impatience, pride, covetousness, envy, hatred, malice, and other sinful affections, as you, my Lord and God, know well, and I cannot deeply enough deplore. But I repent of these things, and am sorry for them, and heartily ask you for mercy, for the sake of your beloved Son Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Pastoral Prayer and The Lord’s PrayerOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

**The Offering and Announcements

The PeaceThe peace of the Lord be with you always.

And also with you.

Having been reminded that we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, we gladly extend the peace of the gospel to one another.

(sung by all)In Christ alone!—who took on flesh,Fullness of God in helpless babe. This gift of love and righteousness,Scorned by the ones he came to save:Till on that cross as Jesus died,The wrath of God was satisfied—For every sin on him was laid; Here in the death of Christ I live.

No guilt in life, no fear in death,This is the power of Christ in me;From life’s first cry to final breath,Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man,Can ever pluck me from his hand:Till he returns or calls me home,Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.
