Readings For The Week
CELEBRATE TENEBRAE Tuesday, April 16th at 7:30pm
St. Zepherin
We invite you to experience Scrip-ture readings and psalms relating to Jesus as the Suffering Servant
by joining us for Tenebrae. The Office of Tenebrae (darkness or shadow) is a Holy Week devotion da-ting back to the 7th or 8th century. In this service, we will remember the betrayal, abandonment and agony of Jesus’ journey to the cross. This service is also marked by the gradual extinguishing of can-dles and other lights until a single candle, consid-ered a symbol of Jesus, remains.
CRS RICE BOWL RETURNS
During our Lenten Journey, we walked with our broth-ers and sisters around the world who are hungry and in need. Please bring in your CRS Rice Bowl donation in a check (payable to Good Shepherd Parish with a notation for CRS Rice Bowl) or cash, in an envelope or in the carton Rice Bowl on Holy Thursday, April 18th - Celebration of the Lord’s Supper Mass at 7:30pm at St. Zepherin Church.
During the presentation of the gifts at the offertory, you will be invited to bring forward your donation and place it in the baskets near the altar. Thank you for your kind donation.

SPECIAL EASTER COLLECTION TO BENEFIT
From offering First Communion and daily Eucharist to blessing our marriages or our loved ones as they are called home to God, our priests in good standing, es-pecially our senior priests, have always answered our calls. Like us, they are troubled by the current events taking place in the Church, yet they are still there for us. Help us care for the health and well-being of our senior priests in good standing by graciously support-ing them in our annual Easter collection next week.
The following are Senior Priests who have served faithfully at Good Shepherd Parish. Please consider remembering these faithful priests in your prayers and when contributing to the Easter Collection this year:
Rev. Paul Berube Rev. Ronald Bourgault Rev. Edward Carroll Rev. Richard Casey Rev. Francis Conroy Rev. John Nichols Rev. Gerald Osterman Rev. James Savage

Don't Forget to Sign Up for Online Giving!
Our parish has been using an Online Giving system that is strengthening stewardship as well as making it easier for members to support our parish. We cur-
rently have over a hundred families signed up through various Online Giving sources. They include WeShare, Charitable Giving Funds and electronic fund transfers through your bank. Liliana Lucas will be available to help you sign up to WeShare, our online giving program, or to answer any questions that you may have about on-line giving after all the masses this weekend, April 13/14. Thank you for your financial support of our parish.

Good Shepherd Parish - Lenten 2019
Discipleship: During Lent all Sunday homilies have been focused on being a disciple and living out the moral life in the world of today. We want to thank all the members of our Parish Family who gave a brief witness talk on how they are living out being a disciple today as rooted in Matthew 25.
Parish Retreat: Many thanks to ALL our parishioners who attended our Parish Retreat on Sunday, April 7th. Special thanks to Aurelie A. Hagstrom, STD, our guest speaker, who gave her talk on the role of the Laity after Second Vatican Council. We invite you to read Aurelie's book "The Emerging Laity: Voca-tion, Mission and Spirituality to learn more about this very insightful topic. EASTER SUNDAY GREETINGS
On Easter Sunday morning, hun-dreds of people who do not attend church regularly will come to Mass. We can show them they are welcome. The friendly act of greet-ing them at the door is an easy act of evangelization.
To be part of this you need only arrive 20 minutes before the mass of your choice, open the door, smile and say "Welcome" or “Happy Easter”. This can be a great family activity with kids. Either do this to-gether, or you can do the greeting while your spouse saves places in the always crowded church.
To join in, please phone MaryAnn at 508-650-3545, o r s e n d h e r a n e m a i l a t [email protected]. Tell her which mass you will attend Easter Sunday and that you will greet. We will get in touch to coordinate. Easter Sunday Masses are 9:00am at St. Zepherin and 11:00am at St. Ann’s and St. Zepherin. Please help.

Many thanks to everyone who made sand-wiches and Blessing Bags at the parish’s Soup, Service & Stations on Friday, April 5th. We brought them to our visit to the Boston Common the next morning. Our
brothers and sisters were so grateful to receive them!
As soon as we arrived at the Common, a woman visiting from Pennsylvania asked if she could help us distribute our donations. She joined us behind the tables to serve those in need.
A man approached one of our volunteers to say that he was happy to see us helping the homeless. He lived on the streets of Boston 15 years ago and said that there were no groups like ours then to help him and others. He has been sober for 10 years and has a job and a home. Sadly, he saw some familiar faces in line and hoped they could get off the streets like he did.
Did you know that our ministry accepts donations of dress shirts, dress pants, suits, dresses, and dress shoes? We donate them to the employment program at St. Francis House, a homeless shelter near the Common.
DONATIONS: Your donations of NEW OR GENTLY USED FOOTWEAR AND CLOTHING are greatly appreciat-ed. Please place these donations and water bottles (16 oz. bottles) in the plastic blue bins inside the main en-trances of both churches. The MOST NEEDED ITEMS for our May trip are:
Please PRAY for our brothers and sisters living on the streets. This month’s SPECIAL PRAYER REQUESTS are for Camelia, Carmelo, Dennis, Gizmo, James, Jim, Joe, John, Jose, Karen, Leigh, Lucy, Lynda, Maria, Marie, Patri-cia, Paulette, Roseline, Rufus, Sidney, Tim, and Warren. For further information, please contact Paula Morgan, [email protected]. Our next two trips to Boston will be on Saturday, May 4th and Saturday, June 1st.
Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion
A documentary about local veterans featured interviews with soldiers from World War II through the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They were patriotic, wanted to serve their country and were proud of their service. They answered all kinds of questions about their experiences, and their memories of serving. When asked why they served, there was one answer they all seemed to have in common. Each veteran indicated that he had served for the sake of freedom and so someone else would not have to go to war.
Jesus is an example of selfless service. He is the suffering servant who bears our sins and dies for our sake. When we cannot help ourselves, Jesus steps in, giving His life for ours. Service for the sake of others is a selfless act of generosity. People are of-ten in need and have nowhere to turn. Those who are blessed with abundance have the opportunity to make a difference, to serve the needs of people who are not so fortunate. It is not always about money or physical needs. Sometimes we are over-whelmed by confusion, fear, loneliness, anger, and loss. A helping hand can come in the form of a few words of encouragement, a listening ear, a hug, some time spent together or sharing a meal. The power to make a difference is in your hands. Use it for the sake of others.

Lent began with Jesus tested in the wilderness (Lk 4:1-13) and its ominous conclusion, “When the devil had finished every test (Gk. peirasmos), he departed from him until an opportune time”. Now is the “hour” for Jesus on the cross to become “king” and “savior” (a title often claimed by emperors) for the whole world. And as Jesus prays, this time in a garden with sleep-ing disciples close by, that other challenge (“…his angels to protect you…”, v.10) also returns in a new key, God’s angel does come – not to snatch Jesus up and away from the torture, abuse, and suffering of death but to “strengthen him.”
At the same time there is another “testing” going on in that garden with less promising exam results, that of Jesus’ disciples. It too involves prayer – or their failure at this critical time. The last petition in the prayer Jesus had taught them included the words, “…lead us not into temptation (Gk. peirasmos; Lk 11:4). Jesus told them as they came into Gethsema-ne, “Pray that you do not enter into peiras-mos” (22:40). Upon completing his own prayer, Jesus finds them stretched out on the ground sound asleep. He again urged them to stand up and pray not to be put to the test (v. 46). Too late for that, even as he
speaks the noisy crowd led by Judas arrives on scene and the final events of the Passion begin to unfold.
And with it failed “testing” of Jesus’ disciples, notably in Peter’s triple denial (Lk 22:54-62). Despite Jesus’ warning during their final meal, “…I have prayed for you that your own faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned back, strengthen your brothers” (22:32), Peter’s sleep induced amnesia erased those words until Jesus looks at him after that denial (v. 61). So even as Peter breaks down in tears there is a promise for the future. That Greek verb “strengthen” (sterizo) evokes images of “setting something on a secure foundation”, “stabilize”.
This example reminds us that imitating Jesus who turns to prayer at every key point in his life (Lk 3:21; 6:12; 9:18, 28-29; 11:1; 22:41) does not leave us alone before the Father. Where disciples fail, col-lapse with grief, or develop amnesia, Jesus prays for them, as he even asks forgiveness for those responsi-ble for his death (23:34). And as he defends Jesus’ innocence, the repentant thief asks, “remember me” and is promised paradise (23:43).

Growing up on the edge of poverty, Hector wrestled with homelessness, and was struggling to find food. While playing basketball in a local Church league, he met Fr. Paul O’Brien, who encouraged him to go to college.
Fr. Paul was there for Hector at every step of his journey to college and beyond. With his help and guidance, Hector went on to play basketball for Regis College, graduate, and now works as a school counselor to give back to students the same hope and inspiration he received. Like Fr. Paul, our senior priests in good standing have been helping others for decades.
As we celebrate this Easter with our families and friends, please remember the Boston priests who have helped us along our life journey and consider making a gift of thanks to the special Easter collection for their health and retirement needs.
Funds from this special collection are managed by the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust – an independently managed trust with a majority lay board of trustees. The funds are used for the sole benefit of active and senior priests in good standing.
