WHAT IS THE MOTHER’S DAY CLASSIC?

WALK ALL OVER BREAST CANCER.

The Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic is a walk or run that raises funds for breast cancer research and is held annually on Mother’s Day - the second Sunday of May. The event was initiated and continues to be organised by Women in Super.

This national event provides the community with a great way to celebrate Mother’s Day and to support breast cancer research. WIS sees its organisation of the Mother’s Day Classic, together with its work in promoting better retirement prospects for women, as an important investment in the future health of Australian women, so they can enjoy a happy and healthy retirement.

The Mother's Day Classic gives you the chance to make a difference to the lives of those diagnosed with breast cancer. Since Women in Super initiated the event in 1998, 5 year survival rates for women diagnosed with breast cancer have been increasing, and now stand at 90% of those diagnosed.

If you would like to help us make a difference we urge you to consider walking, running, volunteering, sponsoring or raising funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) through the Mother’s Day Classic.

The next Mother’s Day Classic will be held on Sunday 13 May 2018 in all capital cities and many regional areas across Australia.

For more information: visit the Mother's Day Classic website.

ORGANISING A REGIONAL EVENT

The Mother’s Day Classic allows you to create your own community event where everyone can get involved and play an important role in raising funds for breast cancer research.

Regional events can be less formal than the capital city events and could be as simple as a walk in the park with family and friends.

2017 saw 100,000 people across 81 regional areas and ten major cities taking part in an MDC walk or run on Mother’s Day.

When deciding to host an MDC event the first questions to consider are:

❖ Do I have support of a committee or group?

❖ Is there a venue or location available and will I need council permits or road closures?

❖ Does the venue have space for on-the-day entries, warm up and maybe a sausage sizzle?

❖ What local businesses or groups could be involved and potentially become an event sponsor?

These are a small part of what’s involved when holding an MDC event, and we understand you may not have done this

before, which is why a full time MDC staff member is available to assist and support you in creating a special event!

Any event has costs associated with it and we understand this, although we ask costs are kept to a minimum so more can be donated to NBCF.

Regional events are encouraged to gain sponsorship from local businesses or local council (grants or sponsorship) to help with event costs. While it is acknowledged you may not be in a position to organise significant corporate financial sponsorship, local businesses may be able to donate prizes and/or giveaways, cover expenses for a sausage sizzle, jumping castle or flowers for sale – this way all proceeds from sales go to breast cancer research.

Sponsorship comes in many forms and you may need to be creative on how to sell it to local business to get them involved. The event manual has more idea’s on how to gain sponsors and a sponsorship proposal and registration form is available to download from the resource page. Otherwise calling the national office for some tips is always welcomed.

When gaining sponsorship, MDC organise the financial side of this for you by providing an invoice for payment by the sponsor, this is why we ask you to fill out the sponsor registration form and send it back to us. The funds are credited to the MDC account, allocated to your event only and to be used when required.

NEXT STEPS…

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

1. Do I have a group of people who can form a committee?

➢ This is an important step as you will need help and support from others to put on the event.

2. What sort of event would I like to hold?

➢ Walk only or include a run? We encourage regional events to only hold a walk, please contact MDC first to hold a run.

➢ What length of walk/run? The most popular is a 4km and 8km, although you may choose whatever distance you wish.

\3. Is there a venue available to hold the length of walk/run?

➢ What sort of venue’s do you have available? Local football oval, athletics track, school or local park are some options to consider.

➢ Do you require a council permit or booking?

➢ Does traffic management need to be organised? We encourage events to find venues where they do not need traffic management as this is costly to have.

Once you have taken all this information in and have an idea about what your event will involve please organise a time to speak with the Regional Event Specialist to answer any other questions you may have and to go over event logistics and process to get your event registered!
