State championships “a fitting end to an excellent season”Freshman John Hassett races to fifth place win

runners wrapped up a stellar season at thestate championships at Cumberland onNovember 2. The boys placed third, behindBoothbay and Orono, and the girls sixth, with Orono grabbing the top spot.

“[It] was a fitting end to an excellentseason,” Coach Erich Reed wrote in an emailafter the race.

As teams, both the girls and boys postedhigh results in the post season leading up tothe states: second behind Orono at the PVCs,and second (boys) and third (girls) at theregionals.

Reed said the team’s success is due, inpart, to the 19 runners who returned from theprevious year, combined with “a few ready-to-go freshmen with experience.”

Next year, Reed plans to encourage “newathletes to come out” by keeping it fun, while notching up the volume and intensityof training for his more experienced runners.

“John [Hasset]’s fifth place finish andHanna Gutow’s 16th led our team and alsoset our school’s fastest times (17:41 and22:21) on the [Cumberland] Twin Brookcourse.”

Hassett was the fastest freshman runner inthe state on that course. “John’s a reallyfierce competitor,” Reed said in a recentphone call. “The level of success he’s had ispretty remarkable.”

Hassett also placed second in the EasternMaine regional championship and the

runner, “was pretty incredible” in the postseason, said Reed, posting an 11th place win(18:41) among freshmen and 17th overall inthe states and 11th at the regionals.

On the girls’ side, sophomore RachelDesfosses, who placed 36th overall at thestates, “was our second runner all year,”behind sophomore Hanna Gutow. The toptwo Eagles girls finished at 15th and 17th atthe regionals the week before.

Girls soccer team pushes for a playoff finishFalls to Houlton in the quarters

By ANNE BERLEANTBLUE HILL—The Eagles girls struggled

with uneven match play this season, but stillfought their way to the quarterfinals in theEastern Maine Class C playoffs.

“It was one of those up-and-downseasons,” said Coach Steve Bemiss.

After surging ahead of Bucksport 1-0 in asecond overtime period in the prelims, theEagles bowed to second-ranked Houlton inthe quarterfinals, losing 2-0 with no home

crowd advantage.“On another day, we could have beaten

them,” said Bemiss. While the team boasted strong, young

players, like up-and-coming freshmanMorgan Dauk and sophomores AlyssaChesney and Grace Hylan, the four gradu-ating seniors will be missed.

“We had leaders in Jennifer McKenney,Clover Slagle and Charlotte Reiter,” saidBemiss. “It’s too bad we didn’t see AmyBolton [a transfer from Deer Isle-Stoningtonwho joined the team this year] early in hercareer.”

McKenney, who started the year as goal-keeper, was injured in thethird game of the season, and junior MeganNowland “steppedforward and did a heck ofa good job,” Bemiss said.McKenney finished theseason on the field, butnot at the net.

The team finished withan 8-7-1 season record, ranked seventh amongClass C teams.

“We had some goodwins. We had somelosses,” Bemiss said. “Wehad six good freshmenand that doesn’t happenvery often. They allworked hard.”

“If things work out, theyoung team gets olderand better,” he said. “Ithink we can go farther.”

Golf team swings to a solid finishHeilner takes 10th at state individualchampionships

By ANNE BERLEANTBLUE HILL—The Eagles golf team

posted a second-place finish at the PenobscotValley Conference, securing a spot in thestate team championships on October 12.Senior Alex Heilner and junior C.J. Chenalso qualified for the individual state cham-pionships, with pars of 82 and 84, placingfifth and sixth among players, overall.

The team then placed third in the PVC matchbetween division leaders, behind Houlton andHermon. Old Town finished in fourth.

But the problems lay ahead, with a two-week wait before the state’s top teams met atVassalboro. The usual gap is one week, saidCoach Dwayne Carter.

“We were so used to playing two or threematches a week and then to not play one fortwo weeks, it kind of threw us off. Golf is areal mental game. You get a little stale andyou start overthinking.”

Playing on the Arrowhead Course at NatanisGolf Club, the Eagles finished in ninth placeagainst the top 11 Class C teams in the state.

“Practice is not the same as playing thematch,” said Carter. “We were out of sync.”

Heilner hit a team low par of 82, with seniorsBrett Ingraham at 94 and Chen at 96. The teamfinished at 379, six strokes out from sixthplace. St. Dominic Academy won with 329.

At the individual championships—wherethe top 30 golfers in the state compete on thesame course—Heilner hit to a 10th placefinish with an 80 par.

“He was one stroke out of getting amedal,” said Carter, when three players tiedfor ninth place.

Chen “had a bit of an off day,” said Carter, hitting a 93 par for 26th.

“It’s all part of the experience,” Cartercontinued. “I’m looking to Chen to be aleader on the team [next year].”

Brett Ingraham is the second senior on theteam. “We’ll miss him,” said Carter.

With five players returning, Carter hopesto see some new faces on the team next fall.

“With some new additions we have poten-tial to be competitive.”

Wins quarters 4-3against Central

By JESSICA BROPHYBLUE HILL—The Eagles soccer team

had a strong year, entering post-season playin fifth place in the standings with a regularseason record of 11 wins, two losses and onedraw. The team went further in the playoffsthis year than last, reaching the semifinalsbefore falling to first-place Madawaska.

“I’m very pleased,” said Coach Dan Kane.“They’ve played well and played hard as ateam.”

In the quarterfinals, the Eagles took onfourth-place Central on October 30, takingthem down 4-3. Kane said the team got outto a “quick 3-0 lead early on, and then madea few mistakes that led to a goal [for Central]before the half.”

Early in the second half, the Eagles scoredagain, with Central coming in late in thesecond half with two goals.

“They played offensively very well,” saidKane. Sophomore Beowulf Urban scoredthree goals, and senior Philip Shaheen alsoscored a goal. Senior goalkeep KeenanHilsinger made 8 saves on 12 shots.

Congratulations to the teams from these sponsors:

on November 2, the Eagles fell 4-0 to whatKane called a “very veteran, very physical”team.

“They have Maine’s all-time leadingscorer on their team,” said Kane. “He got

three of their goals.”Keepers Keenan Hilsinger and Tim

Cousins combined for 12 saves on 16 shots. Overall, Kane said the team’s strengths

this year were the ability to possess and

control the ball. “Our midfielders andstrikers played very well,” he said. “It took alot of pressure off the defense.”

That was a good thing, he continued, because the fullback line was made up of alot of young players, led by fullback seniorFinn McMahon-Allwine and junior goalkeepTim Cousins and senior goalkeep KeenanHilsinger. “They really helped to guide theyounger players,” said Kane.

The team graduates five seniors this year:Philip Shaheen, Finn McMahon-Allwine,Loriman Looke, Anthony Bianco andKeenan Hilsinger. Shaheen, Bianco andHilsinger served as captains. The bulk of theteam members are juniors and will returnnext year. Many sophomores also earnedvaluable experience.

“The team really gained a lot of experi-ence,” said Kane, who is hopeful for anotherstrong season next year. “There’s a realstrength to the team.”

One of the most positive things about theteam is that they are a “joy to work with,”said Kane.

“They earned a real sense of confidenceover the course of the season, and knew theywere one of the better teams out there,” saidKane. “They showed up every day andplayed hard.”
